Reminders for inclement weather preparedness...

Flashlights safer around pets than candles, Have batteries, and know where you placed them

An old fashioned radio is a good thing to have readily available, camping section at stores have combo flashlight/radio/siren that is powered by cranking action or batteries

Store some water in air tight containers for drinking, fill a bathtub if you have one in case you or pet need it. Or big cooking pots if no tubs avail.

Have a first aid kit readily accessible for you and your pet.

Fill a cooler with ice packs and/or a few ziplocs of ice.

Provide safe shelter for outdoor pets and/or bring them inside if possible. Shelter should be in a place where trees or other debris not likely to fall on them, place water and food in the shelter.

Pets afraid of loud noises like comfort with you, have their bed near where you will be or provide with safe quiet space in home. Tip: thick comforters provide sound dampening

Make sure you stay safe first then your pet in an emergency situation...pets are often smart and find shelter in emergency situations before we do and you cannot care for them if you are not well and safe yourself.

Ask for refills on meds that are low, now, don't wait until the last dose to request a refill. Leave a voice message, it will be listened to.

Make sure you have extra food for your pet. Have some canned foods for yourself too, dirty Moore stew isn't too bad at room temp..been there done that and spam is good at any temp, imo.

If in doubt ask for help. We are here for you!

SC air quality index is expected be in the orange for today, with ground level ozone being unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Ground level ozone can have affect on the respiratory system in humans and pets, especially birds. For any pet or human with asthma or history of any lung disorders, we strongly recommend restricting outdoor activity today and spending time indoors bonding with your pets.

Juvenile pets and senior pets, asthma and hyperthyroidism cats, any pet with recent history of respiratory illness or surgery, and any pet with known air quality sensitivity should remain indoors as much as possible today.

For monitoring the Air quality in your area or more information on the advisory, please visit

AirNow is your one-stop source for air quality data. Our recently redesigned site highlights air quality in your local area first, while still providing air quality information at state, national, and world views.

Holidays are around the corner, Labor Day barbecues and Halloween candy galore are approaching fast. Please be cautious about these foods with your pets. The barbecue food can cause upset stomachs and pancreatitis, the chocolate and xylitol risks in candies are toxic to most animals.
