Lesson of this summer: Get yourself a team member that puts in 100% effort every minute at the farm, a team member that brings skills and strengths that compliment others’, and get yourself a team member that comes with a smile and good vibes.

Good luck finding a team member like Megan P! You can meet her at our open house hour this week, Wednesday, July 3 from 6-7pm! She has some crazy garden art project up her sleeve she can’t wait to share!

See her creative mind at work here with this beautiful landscaping she added between our cottonwoods! Better than anything Dan and Megan EV would have come up with! We are so grateful!! 💚🌱

The pollinator plot is finally planted - or at least half of it! This portion of IronFox is the lowest ground, most likely to be flooded (though it is not flooding even with these flash floods we’ve been getting lately!). We pegged it as our place for native grasses and pollinators because of the low plane and it’s close proximity to the railroad.

Over its development, we’ve learned a lot of what we would do differently next time and leaned on the support from many!
1- without access to a silage tarp, we piece-mealed cardboard and pallets as ground cover to choke out the sun from the w**ds. This proved to be a lot of extra work, and a futile fight against the pervasive bindw**d. Thanks to Dan’s Dad David, herbicide field technician at SDSU, who gave the safest recommendation of proper chemical application. Still we picked gallons of bindw**d roots! This w**d is incredible.

2- thanks to Megan’s Dad Chris and Uncle Philip and friend Jamie Boley for several loads of composted manure to improve the soil!

3- thanks to Jeff Zimprich Pasque Hill on Beaver Creek for your support, guidance, and supply of the Native Plant Mix. Jeff’s passion for SD grassland and native plants has been a bounty of intel to learn from!

4- thanks to the neighbors for your patience in our unsightly project. In time it will hopefully be one of the most beautiful parts of the farm!

You have the opportunity to start your own strawberry patch and support IronFox with the purchase of your own baby strawberry plants (aka plugs)! Right now you can pay $15 for 25 plugs, and the money will go to support our community education and food production. Pick up at our open house hours Wednesday, 6-8pm or DM us for a separate time. Cash or check payment because we don’t have Venmo.

Plugs have been donated by Jan at who hosts a you-pick strawberry and pumpkin patch in Aurora, SD.

Please also consider supporting Berrybrook with their new local, organic ice cream! Find it at the Sioux Falls Co-op or Pomegranate Market.

Things are really picking up at IronFox Farm! The glorious moisture had the garden bursting (including the w**ds 🙃) and the cooler temps made work a delight. To top the great weekend off, some of our favorite neighbors came to help! 💚

Field day with EFA+ was a hot one! 🥵 The students did great! The seeds they started a month ago found their new home at IronFox Farm, the students prepped more beds, planted potatoes, and learned about compost and soil health!

These days would not be possible without volunteers! THANK YOU to the Master Gardener’s, Southeast Tech Horticulture team, Farm Credit Services of America, SoDak Compost, and Natural Resources Conservation Services!

Leftover transplants will be donated to the Sioux Falls Garden Week, a community event for coordinated garden volunteer efforts across the city, organized by Thrive.

The seedlings that the students soil blocked are bursting in life! Baby plants are overflowing from their trays! Our next field day isn’t until May 17th, and we are thinking the babies need to be transplanted sooner.

Farmer Dan will be at EFA+ at school pick-up time this week to help pass out the biggest starts to 3rd & 4th graders to plant at home.

If your student wants to take a plant home and you are afraid you don’t have a good spot for it, come to our first open house hours this Wednesday, May 8 from 6-8pm and we can try to hook you up with something!

Celebrating our Volunteers today, Saturday 10/14!

From noon-5, come spend some time at IronFox Farm- work encouraged but not required! 😉 Today we want to celebrate the hands that help make this community education space possible. Farmer Meg is baking up some goodies to share.

These three girls are our Top Volunteers, a highlight of every morning as they waved on their way to school this summer, and some of the best neighbors we could have asked for. ❤️

The Eat Well Sioux Falls Mobile Market is open! This grocery store on wheels will bring affordable groceries to the neighborhood because everyone deserves to have access to purchase healthy food for their family. Sioux Falls has four USDA-designated areas with undue food-access barriers because of low income or lack of brick-and-mortar grocery store. Innovative solutions (including mobile markets and urban agriculture) are needed to improve our community’s nutrition and health. Thank you to the whole Mobile Market team for bringing this concept to reality!

Great to meet - we are so grateful for her leadership and desire to bring these real issues in our community forward.

These days you can catch me in the okra patch! It has become a favorite as I deem its flower most beautiful in the veg garden!

If you’re new to this vegetable, you’re not alone in the Midwest! Please don’t be afraid!

We prepare these slimy pods of goodness whole, tossed in olive oil with pepper and a touch of cayenne pepper. Then roast for 15 min at 425’ for a wonderful compliment to any summer meal! (Alternatively, throw on the grill for 3-5 min if not wanting to turn on your oven!)

Fun Fact! One cup of okra provides 15% of daily recommended value of folate, helps control blood sugar and cholesterol, and is stocked with many vitamins and minerals!
