Hey Yall Don't know if the Canadian Smoke is reaching SC but in NJ we have a health alert due to the thick smoke from the Canadian wild fires! Keep in mind whenever your weather app has an air quality alert to keep horses exercise to a minimum. Here in NJ we have to keep our horses inside! its awful. Please keep Canada in your prayers and anyone with respiratory conditions too! God Bless and Stay safe

Takeaways Unhealthy air containing wildfire smoke and particulates can cause health problems in people and animals. Particulates from smoke tend to be very small, which allows them to reach the deepest airways within the lungs. Wildfire smoke can cause respiratory issues for horses. They may experie...

Hey Horsey Friends I want to ooze a bit more on my personal trainer Dava Peterson who is my trainer here at Keowee Equestrian LLC.She specializes in centered riding, soft connection to the horse, and the proper biomechanics of movement for horse and rider.

Dava got her start in riding at age 7 ( lucky girl) with a focus on western performance with cutting/ reining cowy horses then flirted with hunter jumpers where she obtained a functional knowledge of the discipline. Then while attending CLemson Univ she found her passion-DRESSAGE
Since starting classical dressage 18 years ago she has continued to develop her understanding of proper biomechanics of horse and rider and teaches a broad spectrum of riders.Ranging anywhere from hunters jumpers, western. recreational or dressage competitors-her core belief is that good riding is GOOD RIDING no matter the saddle or discipline.
SOOOOO-couple the concept of centered solid biomechanics with a desire to closely connect riders with their horses and she believes (me too) THATS WHERE MAGIC HAPPENS. I can personally vouch that after a handful of lessons with Davas effective comunication style it has positively changed my connection with JD and I am over the moon!
By the way Dava travels to barns! So don't delay and give yourself and your horse a real treat

Ever desire to ride your horse with mindful aids sooooo light that a regular person can't tell you have used an aid? Thats what proper dressage teaches. Its not about forcing your horse into a "fancy frame" its about connecting your thoughts thru your seat and legs to become a team. If you desire a softer connection you can find Dava Peterson at Keowee Equestrian LLC in Six Mile. Dava is a phenomenal instructor who is kind and passionate about discovering the balance, trust and beauty in riding. The best thing about Dava - SHE TRAVELS- I would be happy to introduce you to her bc she is the BEST around and for a super reasonable fare she can help any discipline become softer and BETTER connected with their equine partner.
P.S. we only have 3 stalls left!

This pile of beet pulp came out of a horses esophagus.

Dr. Paton, after having seen several beet pulp chokes in the last two days, felt a reminder is in order.

Beet pulp can be an excellent feed for horses. It is an energy-rich source of digestible fiber. However, it MUST be thoroughly soaked and wet when fed.

Dry beet pulp pellets can easily lodge in the esophagus , quickly swelling and causing choke. This is not like human choke , the airway is not blocked , the horse is able to breathe. Almost every case of choke that we see was caused by the pellets not being adequately soaked or horses breaking into the feed room and gaining access to the dry pellets.

Anatomical problems, such as poor dentition and abnormal esophagus anatomy, can also predispose a horse to choking.

Chokes can predispose horses to aspiration pneumonia, which is caused by feed material going down the trachea and into the lungs. This foreign material in the lungs can cause the horse to develop a secondary bacterial infection.

Finally, a common cause of choke is poor dentition leading to inadequate chewing; be sure to schedule a thorough dental exam following a choking episode.

Chokes are common equine emergencies with potentially serious consequences. Call your veterinarian as soon as you notice signs of choke.
