Dental x-rays – why bother?

Dental x-rays are a very important component of a full oral evaluation in our pets. There are often problems that have begun unnoticed below the gum line and can be headed off before becoming more serious and painful concerns. Dental x-rays also are needed to properly extract a tooth. If we do not know what is going on below the gum line, the extraction could be much more time consuming and have a greater chance of complication. Check out this x-ray – the circled area shows clear areas around roots on two different teeth. These areas indicate loss of bone around the roots and therefore will lead to chronic pain and infection if these teeth are not extracted.

Broken teeth….why do they occur and how can they be prevented??

Many dogs love to chew. Chewing hard items including real bones, antlers, hooves, hard plastic nylabones, and basically anything else you cannot indent your thumb nail into can lead to fractured teeth. Once a tooth is fractured, bacteria can travel down into the tip of the tooth root and create an abscessed root. This is painful and requires extraction of the affected tooth. Be sure to test chew toys with a thumb nail before offering them to your pet.

So you cannot brush your pet’s teeth…What do you do??

First of all, keep trying (unless there are concerns with aggressive behavior). Most pets can be trained to allow tooth brushing to occur if given enough time and patience. If things are still not going well, check out some of the various dental treats and diets available. There are several prescription and over the counter diets that work toward good dental health. When picking items for this purpose, be sure to look for the veterinary oral health council (VOHC) seal of acceptance.

Brush, Brush, Brush your pet’s teeth!

Plaque is a sticky bacterial film that develops on tooth surfaces. Plaque can be brushed away with a toothbrush and enzymatic toothpaste. However, once plaque hardens into tartar (aka calculus), it cannot be brushed away from the surface of teeth. This hardening process can occur in as little as 1-2 days. Brushing teeth regularly (daily if possible) is the best way to avoid tartar build up, which is the first step towards decay and tooth loss.

At least 1,382 cases of heart damage, possibly diet related, have been reported in dogs, although veterinary researchers believe the problem could be more widespread than the numbers suggest.

Here is a link for COVID and the risk for your pets.
Dogs and cats can get COVID from their owners. The infection is NOT usually serious but it is ideal to avoid contact when possible.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. Some coronaviruses cause cold-like illnesses in people. Others cause illness in certain types of animals, such as cattle, camels, and bats. Some coronaviruses infect only animals and do not infect humans.

Purina is recalling a limited amount of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN Gastroenteric Low Fat (PPVD EN Low Fat) prescription wet dog food in 13.4 oz cans due to a labeling error. According to the company, for a brief period on September 15, 2022, cans of a different complete and balanced adult dog food, Purina ONE True Instinct Tender Cuts In Gravy With Real Turkey & Venison wet dog food, were labeled as PPVD EN Low Fat. The mislabeled diet is safe to feed, but it is not the intended formula for dogs requiring a prescription PPVD EN Low Fat diet, who may have sensitivities to traditional diets or difficulty digesting fat.

The mislabeled product can be identified by the UPC (38100 17599), production code (22581159 L4TR6) and “Best Before Sept 2024” date on the bottom of each PPVD EN Low Fat can. Also, the mislabeled product contains chunks in gravy, while the correct product looks more like a pate consistency.

Purina apologizes for any concern or frustration this situation has caused. If you have any questions or concerns or Purina can replace affected product for you, please email them at [email protected] or call 888-777-1762, Monday – Friday, 8am – 4:30pm CST.

Some words of wisdom as we head into the season of tinsel, homemade ornaments, ribbons and chocolate!

We helped a patient who had decided that her mom's crochet Christmas ornament looked like a yummy snack. We induced vomiting and Daisy produced some Christmas spirit for us.

The holidays are a great time to get festive, decorate, and welcome family into your home. It’s usually not a time for holiday pet safety to be top of mind. However, taking a few preventive measures before and during the holidays can help to ensure a happy and safe holiday season for your pet.

Keep an eye on your pets! Be their voice and get them help if you suspect they have ingested something they shouldn't. Time is of the essence in situations like this! Daisy's mom got her the help she needed before the problem became worse.
