What is Arthritis? Arthritis. It’s one of the leading, if not the lead, cause of chronic pain in dogs. Unfortunately, it is not just an “old” dog condition—it occurs in pets of any, yes any, age. Arthritis is defined as “inflammation of the joints,” and often results in structural and fu...

Here are two more techniques that may help reduce your pet’s anxiety. try and do the points before the fireworks or thunderstorm startss, . If your pet suffers from general anxiety or noise phobia, try to do these points on a regular basis. Remember to stay calm yourself, breathe, and talk softly in a low voice. If you feel anxious chances are your pet will pick up on that.
I hope this helps! Keep me posted and if you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

Do you have a pet that is full of anxiety during the fireworks, a thunderstorm or other loud noises?
I made this short video to demonstrate some points that may help your pet feel less anxious during these times of high stress.
While doing these points, remember to stay calm yourself. Breathe, relax, talk slowly in a low voice. If you get anxious, chances are your pet will to!
Let me know what you think and if you have any questions, please reach out!

We are all about PEACE ☮️ and LOVE ❤️. (And education 📚).

Did you know Rest Ice Compression Elevation (RICE ) is a thing of the past in the newest research out there?

Research has shown that the ‘new’ approach to soft tissue injury management can be remembered through the acronym PEACE and LOVE (its actually not super new…the research has been out for some time…it’s just that change is hard and it tends to be slow when all of society was taught the same information. What was once the accepted norm, underwent reform, and now we need to re-educate ourselves in light of new information (metaphor not lost on me for larger matters in this world as well).

Check out our infographic and be sure to SAVE it.

The hardest part of this approach for me is that I actually love ice.
So I do still use ice as a pain reliever, but I’m doing it much less and I am not using it with the intent to reduce inflammation.
The other one that catches people off-guard when they read this list is to NOT take anti-inflammatory medications right after injury either. Basically, let it inflame and let your body do its thing. It’s better that way.

Great tutorial!

Does your pet need a PEDICURE?! 🐾 But you aren't sure HOW to do it?? We've been asked, so here's a quick tutorial:

Here are some tips:
--> Be careful not to trim too much - start with just a little at a time!
--> The "quick" (the blood supply for the toenail) grows along with the nail, so if your dog’s nails are very long, you'll have to work towards an ideal length over a period of time by trimming a small amount each time you are able to trim.
--> The quick will pull back naturally as the nails are shortened, so you can safely trim a small amount of nail once a week until at the proper length, and then you can maintain approximately every two weeks from there.
--> If your dog has light colored nails, it's easier to see the quick, however in dogs with dark colored nails, the quick can be difficult to visualize. More reason to only trim small amounts at a time!
--> When you look at the trimmed nail "head on" and start to see the area in the middle of the nail with a shiny appearance, STOP! That's the quick starting to show!
--> If you hit the quick, and the nail is bleeding, over the counter "quick clot" or "quik stop" works well. If you don't have that, try some cornstarch! and apply pressure to the tip of the nail!

"OH, HE'S NOT IN PAIN"
I've been thinking a lot about pain for the past decade: how do I spot it, how do I talk about it, how do I help the animal, and how do I help the guardian recognize and address it....
I always thought that pain is difficult to spot and we just simply don't see it. But today, as I talked to a dog owner, I had a revelation. We do see it. We actually see it very clearly. But we either don't know or don't WANT to know it's pain. Hear me out.
On my morning walk with Rocco I ran into an owner of a 5yo energetic dog breed. I've know the dog since a puppy and because I haven't seen them in a while, I stopped to chat:
"How's your dog doing"
"Great! Really matured and slowed down quite a bit, turned 5 and like a switch flipped, truly middle-aged mature dog now"
At this point my eyebrow goes up...
"What do you mean?"
"Not a runner anymore, listens well, prefers to stick close to me"
knowing the breed very well, I see nothing but red flags, owner continues:
"We went on a long hike, I think it was a bit much, so now we don't hike much, doesn't seem to like it anymore, I guess lost confidence or is worried.
I ask the most obvious question:
"Do you think he injured himself, maybe he's in pain?
"Oh no he's not in pain! I think he's just matured"
I can count at least 10 statements in this short exchange that lead me to believe this dog is in pain. The owner clearly sees them too, they are naming them one by one, I even suspect they are starting to see a problem....but....are they scared? Are they in denial? Are they not ready to face the reality? I don't know.
But please, watch your language and the way you describe your dog:
⚠️They matured

⚠️They slowed down

⚠️They don't like xyz activity anymore

⚠️They're needy

⚠️They lost confidence

⚠️They're worried
And do your dog and yourself a favour and talk to your veterinarian, your dog might likely be in pain.
PS. Rocco is almost 13yo and his medical file rivals War and Peace at this point, but on a good day and given the opportunity he will still choose to run. If he doesn't, I know he's in pain.
