As the weather warms up, black flies become a common nuisance—not just for us, but for our dogs too. These tiny biting insects can leave red, circular marks on your dog’s belly, ears, or inner thighs. While they may look alarming, black fly bites are typically harmless and go away on their own within a few days.
Black fly bites can be irritating, but they don’t usually carry diseases like ticks or mosquitoes.
The bites can be soothed by:
- gently clean the area with mild soap and water
- apply a pet-safe anti-itch spray or soothing ointment
- keep your dog from scratching to avoid infection
Prevention Tips:
- avoid peak fly activity times (late morning to early evening)
- use dog-safe insect repellents (Vectra 3D monthly application also contains an insect repellant
- keep your yard clean and avoid standing water, which attracts flies
If the bites don’t improve in a few days, or if your dog shows signs of swelling, excessive itching, or discomfort, check with your vet to rule out any secondary infections or allergic reactions.
