Last week, Samantha was invited to Bloomfield Elementary to speak to students about the passions and influences that led to her career choice of becoming a vet tech. She brought along some cool x-rays, bladder stones, and different sized teeth for the kids to feel and discuss.

Over 25 different local community members attended to show the students how they use their hobbies or careers to make a difference in the community.

Hopefully we have some new additions to the veterinary field in about 15 years!

A testimonial from long time client, Mardi P:

“Just wanted to send a thank you to Dr. Amanda for the excellent care she took of our cat Anni. Anni had to have several teeth pulled that were causing her mouth to be infected. She was feeling better within 24 hours, chasing mice and loving life. Do not hesitate to get dental work done on your pet. It is well worth it.

Anni looks cute but we found out her tongue was out due to the pain from her teeth. Her face was also swollen.

Can’t forget a shout out to Dr. Eric as well. He’s been wonderful to our cats in the past. Great vets at the Animal Medical Clinic for years.”

We’re glad you’re feeling much better, Anni! 🐱 ♥️ 🐾

Viewer discretion advised!

We are loving this warmer weather, and so is our local wildlife. ‘Tis the season for porcupines!

We have seen 5 dogs with quills in the past 2 days 😳

A few facts about porcupines and their quills:

-contrary to popular belief, porcupines can NOT “throw” their quills. They need to be touched for the quills to lodge into other objects

-quills should not be “cut” prior to pulling them out, this actually can cause them to splinter more easily

-tiny barbs on the quills cause them to move inward, and can pe*****te through muscle walls into organs, and can even be fatal in severe cases

-quill pe*******on causes infection and abscesses if not treated in a timely manner

-quills are very painful if removed without anesthesia or pain medications, so it is best to contact your veterinarian, or an emergency vet clinic as soon as possible after the incident

Unfortunately, most dogs don’t learn to keep these creatures alone after the first quilling! Ways to prevent this from happening include walking your dog on a leash and monitoring closely when outside at night, placing a bell on their collar to ward off porcupines, or keeping your yard fenced where your dog roams outside.

Last month, Chance came in not feeling so good. Turns out, he had parvovirus 😢

Parvovirus (commonly known as ‘parvo’) is a virus that dogs can contract that usually involves severe vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence and lethargy. If left untreated, parvo can be fatal from the severe dehydration it causes.

Treatment normally includes supportive care: iv fluids and antibiotics, syringe feeding, and constant monitoring.

Please make sure your puppies (and adult dogs) are vaccinated for parvo! When you get a new dog, do not expose them to other dogs until they have received their necessary shots and boosters.

Today, Chance is here for his exam and vaccines, and looks like a brand new happy puppy! We are all so happy he is feeling much better. 🐶 🐾

This week is pet identification week!

Did you know 1 in 3 pets will be lost at least once during their lifetime? Microchipping allows your pet to obtain permanent identification linked to your contact information, resulting in a faster reunion in the event of being lost and found.

Also, placing a tag on your pets collar with your phone number is recommended when going for walks, hikes, or even playing outside.

Placing a microchip is fast and easy! Please call to schedule an appointment, or if you have any questions on microchipping your pet.

Here is your reminder to make sure your pups are kept on a flea/tick and heartworm preventative! Winters have been fairly mild, and we recommend using both a flea/tick and Heartworm prevention year-round.

This test shows a positive result for Heartworm disease, Lyme disease, AND Anaplasmosis. Lyme and Anaplasma are carried by deer ticks, and Heartworm is transmitted by mosquito bites.

Ticks are definitely making themselves known already, and mosquitoes will be back before we know it- talk to your veterinarian about the best options for your pet!

(*Note that all Heartworm preventatives are prescription only, and require your pet to be up to date on annual exam, with a negative Heartworm test*)

February is National Pet Dental Health month!

We all know how stinky our pet’s breath can get at times. This smell is usually caused by tartar or plaque buildup on the teeth. Tartar can also lead to tooth pain and bacterial infection. 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will have some sort of dental disease by the age of 3 and can also have adverse effects on other organs, such as the heart and kidneys. Studies have shown that a healthy mouth can add years to your pet’s life!

You can help keep your pets teeth clean by:
- providing dental treats (we recommend Oravet or Dentastix for dogs and Greenies for cats)
-brushing daily at home with a pet specific toothpaste
-adding a pet dental additive to their drinking water
-scheduling routine dental cleanings under anesthesia with your vet to scale and polish their pearly whites.

To celebrate Dental Health Month, we are discounting dental cleanings by 10% for existing and up to date patients. Call today to schedule! 🐶 🐱 🦷

(Viewer discretion on the last photo)

Earlier this week, we had a dog patient come in who enjoyed his new toys a little TOO much… this guy ended up swallowing one of his balls!

Although this specific toy is made for small breed dogs, Dr. Amanda has heard about a few other cases with these same exact toys becoming ingested by larger breeds.

It’s very easy for our pets to become excited over their toys, especially when they make fun squeaky sounds and bounce all around. Please monitor your pets closely while they play with toys, especially if they like to rip, tear, and even swallow pieces. Read the labels on new toys to ensure they are an appropriate size and material for your dog’s size and chewing habits. If your pet is a chewer, make sure their toys do not splinter easily or have any parts that can be removed and swallowed.

This dog recovered very well from surgery, and is back to his happy, tail wagging self! 🐶
