Introducing Miss Lucy "Delia" Morningstar von SchattenHaus - Granddaughter of Sasha ๐Ÿ’œ

It's been a little over a week since we brought home one of Ronan's puppies! She's such a fun, chaotic bundle of mess ๐Ÿ˜… She flip flops from her mother's personality to her daddy's in 0.5s.

She loves snuggles, swimming, whining about Courtney Luquette's whereabouts, and playing with me ๐Ÿ’œ She tries to be very gentle with Peach and enjoys terrorizing the cats!

The perfect caboose to our family pack (cause we're not doing this again for 10+ years).

I forgot to post some adorable updates on the Ronan & Kacie litter! They're 5 weeks old, healthy, and exploring ๐Ÿ˜

While it's too early to say for sure, it's important to acknowledge that it's not "all in how you raise them." These puppies are combinations of some amazing temperaments and yet - they all display these traits differently. When picking a puppy, it's so so so important to listen to the breeder's notes. I knew several lifelong traits Ronan and Sloan have from 8 weeks old. Those quirks didn't just go away ๐Ÿ˜…

At least one of the girls will go on to continue this bloodline and carry on the name. I'm still so proud to be a part of improving and preserving a breed that started to downhill.

Very very true!!!

Very very true!!!

Quick rant: I see this happening more often with newcomers to Fast CAT so I think it needs to be addressed. Just because the term "Catcher" is used to describe the human behind the finish line, that does not mean you are actually supposed to physically restrain your dog while they are still running, grab them by the face/leg/tail, etc. Whether your dogs are chasing the bag or not, give them room to finish their run. You are supposed to let them pass you and turn around, THEN you can "catch" them.

I have seen people and dogs both get seriously hurt doing this all to keep them from destroying a 5 cent trash bag. It's not worth it, there are plenty of trash bags and it takes less than a minute to replace them. In short, get out of your dog's way. No one will be upset if you let them have the bag for a few seconds. It's far less of a time drain than calling an ambulance or emergency vet because neither of you can walk. Fast CAT is supposed to be fun, so let your dogs have some fun.

Please share this with anyone you see doing this or are new to Fast CAT so more dogs can enjoy this sport.๐Ÿ˜ Carry on!

SIX skills I am intentional about working on each time I engage with my dogs and yours.

โ€ข Auto Sit & Down-Stay: It's crucial that when I tell the dogs I'm working with to sit or down, they know to automatically stay until they're released or given further instruction. This helps keep them safe and requires a certain level of trust and impulse control that I value highly.

โ€ข Distance Sit & Down-Stay: Being able to cue our dogs from a distance is a benefit in so many areas of our lives, both in the working fields and in our recreational activities.

โ€ข Recall: This one seems obvious, but life (and sanity) saving!

โ€ข Drop it: This is important when handling rewards and toys of any kind to save your fingers, as well as emergency situations where your dog might be tempted to ingest something unforgiving.

What skills are you intentional about maintaining with your dog? ๐Ÿพ

Thoughtful Thursday: Knowing When to Make a Change

This past week I was in a lot of pain. Recovering from major surgery and going through rehab for your new knee requires you to do physical therapy AND to reevaluate pretty much how you use that let (not to mention how it affects your whole body).

I have spent almost 10 years modifying my gate, how I walk across the rubble pile, move to train dogs, and even walk up and down stairs to protect that right knee. I am now having to retrain a significant amount of muscle memory so am using all of those muscles (and tendons) correctly. Guess what, I have tendonitis. I am not shocked, this is leftover pain from prior to knee surgery but as I was evaluating my ice/heat/pain medication schedule I realized that icing was not to my benefit.

So I made a change and feel much better).

This spoke to me as I think about some of the behaviors I am training in my dogs. Is how I'm teaching the behavior creating muscle memory in my dog that I do or don't want? How are my reinforcement delivery techniques aiding or hindering my training? How do I improve my mechanical skills to be more efficient AND make the picture clearer to my dog?

So today when I trained (Flash and I did some heeling) I was VERY conscious of where that reinforcement was placed. I made sure to reinforce longer chains of us walking together without the occasional ground sniffing she does. Success!

I also found out I trained in some bad muscle memory. She sits too far away, or she sits at a right angle to me. This is things I will need to break down and now have to overcome ALL THAT MUSCLE MEMORY that I reinforced poorly.

Sigh.

Mechanics matter.

Watch videos. Watch yourself, not the dog. See how you can improve where you place your food/toy to make the picture clearer for your dog.

TRAINING TIP THURSDAY

Teaching your dog to "wait" is helpful for many things. Not only is this a great self-control exercise, it is essential for safety in so many situations.

Train your dog to wait:

๐Ÿ›‘Before coming out of the crate

๐Ÿ›‘Before going out the door

๐Ÿ›‘Before eating a meal

๐Ÿ›‘Before greeting a person or other dog

๐Ÿ’กDid you know? ๐Ÿ’ญ

We are actively involved with the AKC events! To date, we are able to evaluate for the following titles:
- Canine Good Citizen
- Community Canine Good Citizen
- Urban Canine Good Citizen

- Trick Dog Novice
- Trick Dog Intermediate
- Trick Dog Advanced
- Trick Dog Performer
- Trick Dog Elite Performer

- AKC Temperament Test

We're working on our Farm Dog Evaluator assessment and the brand new Fetch titles, too!

โ‰๏ธ Why should you care about titles?

Most of these demonstrate how well-behaved your dog is and can prove to be useful when getting approved for a new apartment, before starting therapy dog or service dog training, or simply to bond with your dog!

๐Ÿ“ฑ Want to start stacking up some titles to show off your dog? Let us know! We train and evaluate (when appropriate) individuals, organizations, and clubs!

Flow is achieved when trained behaviors blend together and become self reinforcing for the dog.

To train this way, you need a variety of foundation behaviors to work with, and a relaxed, confident, and willing partner.

Invest in those foundation behaviors and go back to them frequently, so when you're at the point of stinging them together, your session will just...FLOW.

Say it louder!! ๐Ÿ—ฃ

Say it louder!! ๐Ÿ—ฃ

Let's talk about animals and public access.

Something we hear at least once a week when we are in town with Tubbs is, "I want my dog to be a therapy dog so she can go in stores with me."

Therapy dogs and emotional support animals are not allowed public access. Therapy dogs can only go where pets can go OR where they have the establishment's permission. ESAs are only granted access to housing and hotels, no where else.

The only assistance animal allowed public access is a service dog. If the dog is out of control, then a public establishment (or a nonprofit who recieves federal funding) can ask the dog to be removed.

As you can see here, Tubbs in under control, laying at my feet. As an extra precaution, I am always holding on to her leash with my hand or under my foot. She is also trained in verbal commands as well.๐Ÿ’™

This photo means so much to so many, and we wanted to share with you a testament to the power of responsible breeding.

Here stands 11 dogs - all different ages; some fixed and some intact; so many raised in different homes. Yet each a beacon of ethical breeding practices.

This image is a celebration of what can be accomplished when breeders are supported by a team dedicated to upholding the highest principles of animal welfare and behavior. This is what happens when breeders consider temperament, composure, appropriate home placements, and the future of the dogs they bring into this world.

These dogs don't end up in shelters. The three that were returned last year for various reasons were taken back immediately, no questions asked. Then she handled where their next adventure would be. These dogs are loved, worked, and thriving.

There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with adopting from your shelter or rescues. In fact, it's a great method for many households. But it's also okay if it's not the best for your family. If you're going to go through a breeder, then make it count and stop adding to the problem -

- Save up the money. Your neighbor's cousin's niece's $50 dog is a unicorn. More often than not, you get what you paid for.
- Research, research, and research more. Ask around for opinions and evidence. Look at both!
- Analyze your lifestyle. Are you realistically able to handle what that breed or line requires? Working 40+ hours a week AWAY from the apartment WITHOUT funds for a walker isn't the ideal environment for a Border Collie or Malinois.
- Call us if you're stuck. We help people find the right dog for their home, from breeders, shelters, or rescues. We assist you in making this long-term commitment so you can just feel excited.

Don't settle for half-ass breeders who only care about coat color or breeding as many as possible in a year.

Every dog deserves a better chance at a happy, healthy, fulfilling life. Let's find the one you're meant to give that to.
