6 years ago I had a surprise visit from one of my Marine students, Cpl Jared Heine and IDD “Spike”. Both Heine and “Spike” had very intense and enthusiastic demeanors. Unfortunately Jared passed away a little over two years ago but his memory will last forever 🇺🇸

Trainer friend of mine sent me a screenshot of another trainer attempting to poach a client away from him.

This is absolutely despicable behavior. You cannot post how blessed you are while doing the most low of business practices.

The dog training community needs a public listing of these unethical folks.

At the end of this month, I will no longer be accepting any new retriever clients and moving forward, we may only take on a select obedience dog or two.

After 8-9 years of being open and traveling the country and world since 2009, it is time for more of a normal life. I’ve only had 8 days off in 8-9 years and have missed birthdays, vacations, funerals, etc. Myself and my wife have sacrificed a lot to our clients and dog related activities.

While I didn’t always have the talent to compete, I’ve helped many folks achieve their goals in upper level hunt tests and all stakes of field trials as well as countless hunting dogs and pets.

I’m most proud of the fact that we have kept a full kennel since we opened just by hard work and always doing the right thing.

Thank you to all those that genuinely supported us through the years. We are truly Blessed 🙏

Getting messages about selecting a trainer and here are some suggestions when searching.

How long have they been training and what have they accomplished? Ribbons are great but doesn’t tell the whole story.

How do the dogs look when training? Are they happy or not? Every trainer will have one or two dogs that are not the most enthusiastic, but if all look like this, there is major cause for concerns.

How are the dogs kept? Are the dogs, kennel, dog truck or trailer clean? Do they have actual kennels to relax in after training or do they live on the dog rig?? There have been an alarming amount of dogs dying due to dogs not having ideal housing and care lately.

When you seek out their services, are they slandering other trainers to make themselves stand out? This should a red flag as references/referrals from other trainers and clients and some of the mentioned above should speak for their abilities.

While it can be expensive, don’t price shop. Not everyone has the same ability. Don’t sacrifice your dog’s true potential in order to save a few dollars. It will cost you more in the long run, and like some clients I’ve helped, the dog will never fully recover from poor training.

These are just a few suggestions, but at the end of the day you have to believe in your gut you’re making the right choice for your companion.
