Willowrun Veterinary Hospital is here to treat the dogs, cats, and rabbits of Smithfield, North Carolina, and stands as Johnston County's oldest veterinary hospital. We are also one of the longest-accredited American Animal Hospital Association facilities in the country. Open six days a week, our services include wellness exams, sick visits, vaccinations, boarding, health and travel certificates,

nutrition and weight management, behavioral counseling, allergy and dermatology, euthanasia, acupuncture, herbal medicine, laser therapy, x-ray, ultrasound, in-house lab, parasite testing and prevention, dental, surgery including laparoscopy surgical procedures, pain management, and more.

Our current facility opened in 2003 and has been an excellent place for Willowrun Veterinary Hospital to focus on providing a complete range of small animal medicine and surgery. Yet over the years, a large percentage of time for the doctors of Willowrun was spent making farm calls throughout Johnston County. This mixed animal practice was supported mostly by the equine industry, but included work with cattle, sheep and goats, swine, and a wide variety of interesting exotic pets. These animals have left enough stories in my memory bank to fill a book!

One day we got a call from a trucker on nearby Interstate 95 who had been stopped by an agricultural department official. He needed a written certificate of health for the livestock in his trailer and asked if we could provide that. A few minutes later, there was an elephant in our parking lot! He looked healthy enough to us, so Dr. Zimmerman signed the paper and sent him on south to Florida!

My pager went off at 3 am one morning and it was a call from the 911 emergency center here in Johnston County. A trailer had overturned on Black Creek Road near Four Oaks and a horse was trapped inside. When I arrived on the scene, I had to crawl through wreckage to administer a sedative to the terrified patient. The “jaws of life” were used to cut him free and he stood up and walked away. My picture was on the news later that day.

I have vaccinated an emu and castrated llamas. I have TB tested a buffalo and inspected a barn here in our county that contained over 100 amazon parrots. I have delivered countless calves and foals and done new baby exams on alpaca “crias.” People have brought in snakes, rats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, ferrets, iguanas, and ducks.

We were able to maintain a “nod” to the practice's history in our current facility by offering care to farm animal and exotic patients on an ever dwindling basis up until March, 2020. Denise Jones is a registered veterinary technician who has been with Willowrun since 1994. She helped me with our last large animal patient, a ewe with milk fever that we were able to save and get her back to nursing her lambs. It was a good way to go out.

But who knows what the future holds? Dr. Gillfillan and Dr. Ellis have recently established a rabbit medicine specialty at Willowrun. In my opinion, there is nothing more exciting than the
experience of removing a wiggling cuterebra warble from under the skin of a pet bunny!

We offer convenient weekday and Saturday appointment times as well as same day admission, doggie daycare, and patient boarding.
