I cant encourage people enough to crate train and here's why:
πΎCrates give dogs their own space when they're feeling overwhelmed, or simply just tired. If you do it right, they'll love their crates. All the time, these guys are going to their crates by themselves for naps and/or to politely wait for their meals.
πΎDogs need rest too! Puppies especially, can have a hard time turning off play mode to settle down, regardless of their body being exhausted. Settling is a very important skill that all dogs need to know, and sometimes they need some extra help calming down with a nice quiet space of their own.
πΎEmergencies! A million different things could happen, a lot of which having crate training skills come in handy.
TIPS:
1. Routine. We eat at 8am 2pm and 7pm here, they get 20 minutes to eat their fill. Then we go potty about 10 minutes after each meal. We then go out at least once per hour. We cut off water right after dinner time. And we go potty once in the middle of the night. Of course we have play times and training times as well, but this is our potty routine. The pups know what to expect for our day to day activities, with the surprise of whatever enrichment toys I choose for the day.
2. Treats. To begin with, these guys get a treat every time they go in the crate, and maybe a couple extra treats for doing it when I tell them to lol. Toss a treat in the crate to get them to go in it, then reward again. I randomly give them a small treat while they're in the crates just chilling too. The crate is fun! We do Kongs, lickmats, chew treats and meals all in the crates to for positive associations with it. I eventually wean them off the treat every time they get in, but I definetly make sure they know the crate is fantastic!
Exhausted but things are getting easier as they get into the groove of things. But I can appreciate having a little bit of time that pups aren't following me around and knowing they're safe when I cant watch them. Not to mention m
