WHAT THE F?

Recognising stress responses in dogs.

Fight or flight are well known reactions to fear or stress, but these other “F” words are also important to understand and be aware of as they may not always be so obvious.

Freeze, Fawn, Fidget or Fool around are also responses to stress or fear and are also commonly seen in people.

Some dogs may have a genetic predisposition to one type of response while some react based on previous experience - what has worked for them before or what hasn’t. Some dogs have different reactions depending on the specific context.

Recognising and taking note of situations or circumstances where these responses are seen is important in understanding how our dogs are feeling.

When we recognise a fear or a stress response, we are able to intervene and advocate for our dogs.

Someone dumped 4 very young puppies on the side of the road. Four possibly lab mix babies. Could anyone take them in? I can help with worming and possibly more, but as you know, I have a house full already and can't take them in.

Hygiene... we don't talk much about that! At Zen Den Spaw, I take your dog's health and safety seriously! The grooming table is disinfected, laundry is done with laundry disinfectant, tubs are disinfected daily, and brushes and tools are cleaned and disinfected. Any unused shampoo and conditioner is discarded at the end of the day (bacteria builds up just from the tap water and product breaks down), and mixing bottles are disinfected by soaking in a mild bleach solution daily. 😃

I love this! I teach my groom dogs multiple commands when they come for grooming, and this is one of them! I teach "turn", "shake it off", "go bath", "get in", and a few others they may already know, like "up", "off", etc. The "shake off" has multiple benefits!!!

JUST SHAKE IT OFF
Dogs constantly communicate through their body language.

A “shake off” is one of the many types of body language and is one of the easier ones to notice.

The shake off can provide us with important insights as to how our dogs are feeling.

Besides being a very effective way to get rid of dirt, pesky bugs and water - dogs can remove up to 70% of water in one single shake off - the shake off is often seen just after something that a dog needs a mental reset from.

It’s a way to flush out adrenaline and could be compared to us taking a deep breath to reset our nervous system and calm ourselves down.

Dogs instinctively know they feel better when they just shake it all off!

It’s their way of saying “Phew, I’m glad that’s over, now I can put it behind me and move on”.

Shaking off is a positive way to calm down, reset and cope with stress – be that negative or positive stress.

Sometimes a shake off could be due to an underlying medical reason like an ear infection, allergy, itching or pain.

If you notice a shake off, look at what has just happened beforehand. This will provide a good clue as to what it is that your dog needs to reset from.

🦷‼ Plaque VS Tartar - Main Differences!
The main difference between plaque and tartar is their stage and hardness.

🔍 Plaque is the early, soft stage of dental buildup that can be brushed away.
🔍 Tartar is the hardened, more advanced stage that usually requires professional cleaning to remove in its later stages.

Let me explain further.
🔍 Plaque is a sticky, bio film that forms on the dog's teeth. It's made up of food particles, saliva, and bacteria.
Imagine a dog munching on their favourite treat. Bits of that treat mix with saliva and bacteria in their mouth, creating plaque.
It's the first stage of dental issues and can easily form after each meal.
If you've ever felt a slimy coating on your dog's teeth, that's plaque.

🔍 If Plaque is left untreated it combines with minerals in the mouth and forms a thicker harder layer called Tartar, also referred to as calculus, which is a hard, yellow or brown, deposit / buildup on the dog’s teeth and gum line.

🔍 If Plaque or tartar are left untreated this can lead to gum health issues, onset of Periodontal disease, infections, abscesses, tooth loss and other dental health issues.

The emmi-pet ultrasonic toothbrush is perfect solution for the oral care and prevention for dogs.
The emmi-pet is an ultrasonic toothbrush, silent and does not vibrate and uses ultrasonic waves and specially formulated toothpaste that creates millions of nano bubbles that work 12mm beneath the dogs gum line to remove bacteria and enable plaque and tartar from forming.

Our actions can have a detrimental effect on their ability to rest and sleep.❗
I know no one want to hear that but small changes can make a big difference with this.
This will cover a few issues but I cannot overstate just how important rest and sleep actually is.
If you work from home, do they really need to be at your feet to sleep (or even in the same room). ❓
This is controversial for some, but has become a big issue recently.
The world has changed and many people are now working from home more than ever. The dogs bed has now moved into the home office and can be right at your feet.
"What is the big deal with that?"
There are two main issues with this (and yes this is generally speaking)....
This may inadvertently create separation/hyper attachment issues and the sleep/naps may not be at a restorative level.

They know every time you leave the room, they will get a chance to stretch their legs, have a treat or a quick game with you...some dogs will anticipate this and will only ever catnap (and some will not rest at all).
The slightest movement from you causes them to open their eyes wide because it might be now that you spend time with them.

As for separation/attachment issues, the amount of dogs with these issues have increased in the past few years and some dogs are now with us more than ever. They may never settle or rest when they cannot see you, so what happens when you aren't there ?

They still need autonomy.
They still need to understand the world is safe even without being able to see you.

Choose where you want your dog to rest wisely. ✅
If you notice they leave the room and go outside or into another room to rest or sleep, then that needs respected. Often we may insist they rest where we can keep an eye on them, or it is just easier for us to have them in the same room as the family.
Are they getting a better quality rest/sleep in the lounge when the children are playing or you are trying to help with their homework?
Is the only reason you want them there for your benefit ?

Can they self regulate their temperature in a crate? ✅
This is an issue I see a lot of.
If you are crate training, consider just how hot your pup/dog can actually get with the 5 cm mattress and blankets underneath.
When we sleep, we are able to move to cooler areas of a mattress, or remove a cover....dogs in a crate that has the whole floor area covered are unable to do that easily...they can't regulate their own temperature well when have no option but to lie on a warm surface.

Areas for relaxation can change, allow that too !✅
Where they slept in Autumn to get some midday sun may be now either way to warm, or way too cold now.

Never make a rest area/bed a place of punishment. You need your dog have a positive association with their bed, never a negative one.

Sleep and rest should be restorative.
Let's help them achieve this.
