People want to argue that dogs like Great Pyrenees and Huskies can withstand these temperatures, but they are wrong. This guy loves being outside, but the snow plus the extreme cold is just too much for his paws.
FORCE YOUR DOGS INSIDE!
Be a good owner and bring them in or put them in the barn where they can get out of the snow, at least.

This guy will be available for adoption on Monday. We believe he's been an outdoor dog in the past, working on a farm. If you're interested in meeting him, please let us know. He's a sweetheart, but he is VERY stubborn and hates being locked up. If you know the GP breed, you know they like to be free and often wander. We will require he be adopted to someone with fenced property to keep him safe and secure as well as at least a barn where he can get out of weather. We don't typically adopt dogs to be outdoor pets, but he doesn't seem to be potty trained and could be destructive if he wants to escape.
If you need a good protective farm dog, please reach out.

BRING YOUR PETS INSIDE!!
HAVE A PLACE FOR YOUR OUTDOOR DOGS TO GO OUT OF THE WEATHER!
This dog loves the snow, but his paws are freezing within a few minutes of running in the snow. Of course, he's stubborn as can be and doesn't want to go in, but I made him!

These temps are no joke! Please limit your pets time outside and go outside with them! If no yard, take them on a leash! Do not risk them getting loose and possibly freezing to death.

Anyone missing these two dogs? They were found within the past couple weeks while I was on vacation.
Great Pyrenees was originally found at Captains Corner, on 2/4/25.

The brindle was trapped on Wise Rd in Smithville last Saturday. She's microchipped and owner listed on the chip says she rehomed her and doesn't have the new owners information.

If anyone is missing one of these cuties, please call us at 816-532-0577 or send us a message here.

Full-Time Animal Control Program

There have been some questions recently centering around animal control, and if Smithville needs a full-time animal control program. Below is some information concerning animal control in Smithville.

Currently, animal control responsibilities in Smithville are divided between patrol officers, who handle enforcement, and a utilities administrative assistant, who manages the care and feeding of animals.

If the Public Safety Sales Tax is approved, funding would be used to establish a full-time animal control officer within the police department. This position would be responsible for:

• Enforcing animal control ordinances, including addressing violations such as dogs running at large, failure to register dogs with the City, renewal of dog licenses and neglect. Currently, cats are not included in the City’s municipal ordinances governing animals at large.
• Caring for and managing animals in the pound, ensuring they receive proper food, housing, medical attention, and placement in safe homes.
• Improving tracking and response to animal-related violations, reducing the number of dogs running at large and expediting the return of lost pets to their owners.

A full-time animal control officer would provide a more efficient and dedicated approach to managing animal-related issues, improving public safety and community response.

Animal Control Call Volume

Over the past five years, the Smithville Police Department has responded to an average of 250 animal-related calls per year. On average, officers spend about 1 hour and 20 minutes per animal call, which is twice the length of the average 40-minute response time for all other service calls.

In 2024 the pound took in 83 dogs- 57 were returned to their owners, 26 were adopted and 0 were euthanized.

By establishing a full-time animal control officer, patrol officers would have additional time to focus on other law enforcement duties while ensuring that animal control concerns are addressed more effectively.

This information is provided to inform Smithville residents and should not be considered advocacy or campaigning. Paid for by the City of Smithville, MO.

Adoption on pause!
Frank's adoption is currently on hold until I get back from vacation on Feb 13th. He is still at the foster home, and we will post photos and videos when I get back. So, if you're one of Frank's biggest fans, just know he is alright and living his best life at the foster home!

Water plant operators will take care of any dogs that may come through the door over the two weeks I'm gone.

Have a great weekend!
Go Chiefs!
