Wagyu cattle in Queensland, Australia. We mustered with helicopter and quad bikes, drafted out the calves, pushed the cattle up through the race, sprayed them all for ticks, and we ate good each night.

We started 20 young horses in Rockhampton, Queensland last month. All the riders did great and worked hard. Some nice horses as well.

I visited the beautiful islands of Fiji last week. The local farming and ranching culture was quite interesting. Most the cattle are tied up because they don’t have fencing. The parents water the cattle in the morning, and then tie them somewhere they can graze as they head to work. Then when the kids walk home from school, they would water them and go tie them somewhere else to graze. Most horses had the same system. I saw very few fences.

Did you know Hawaii is the only US State that makes its own new land ? And the regrowth on top of lava starts with a little hardy tree called Ohi a lehua that can grow on top of the rock with no soil needed and it has evolved to change its exterior cells of it’s leaves to shield itself from volcano ash when needed. Volcanoes National Park was a pretty cool and educational stop.

Loading cattle on a boat. This is a video from 1906 produced by Thomas Edison about the Hawaiian islands. Later in the video, there’s oxen working in the sugar cane plantations, This video is what introduced most of the rest of the world to surfing. About a year later was the first surfing in California and about 10 years later people started surfing in Australia.
 I remember when I was young and the Internet just started I was told you can type in anything you want and find it. Of course back then there wasn’t near as much on the Internet as today. Every year or two I would search for loading cattle on a boat in Hawaii. I think I was in college or so when I first saw it. They stopped that in the 50’s or so. Now they use big tall loading chutes to load them into shipping containers. I posted some photos of the chutes in my last couple posts. Of course they are not the only people to ever use boats moving cattle, some still do in some fashion, but this was a pretty unique time in the history of ranching around the world. Also the Australians had quite a time figuring out how get their cattle to a place to be shipped and also to get them shipped and that’s a pretty cool story too. I’m on my way there next to learn a little more about that history and culture as well. Enjoy the video.

Stopped by the Panielo Heritage Museum. If you aren’t familiar with the history of The Hawaiian Cowboy, and how it interweaves with the California Vaqueros, it’s pretty cool. My grandfather told stories of visiting ranches there and them swimming cattle out into the ocean on to a boat heading for the mainland. There’s an old video Thomas Edison produced about Hawaii that showcases this. I remember it was one of the first videos I ever watched on the internet, I’ll share it next.
