2025 is off to a running start and time is already flying by! With this frigid weather, here are some items the shelter needs to keep our residents warm and cozy (and maybe some of our staff, too, while taking care of our furry friends). We truly appreciate the help we receive from our community!

Today we celebrate a very special volunteer — our Kitten Lady Michele! (and the story of her most recent foster “Flip Flop”).

In addition to fostering dozens of kittens in her home over the years, Michele volunteers in our cat room twice a week, each & every week (for 6 years now) to clean and visit with the cats. She makes sure each cat & kitten gets out of their kennels for individual attention as well as play time & socializing them with other cats. Michele is a big reason our cats & kittens are so adoptable.

Most recently, Michele fostered “Flip Flop”, a special needs kitten with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, (also known as CH and wobbly cat syndrome).

CH is a neurological disorder that causes sudden jerky movements, uncoordinated motion and loss of balance. Currently, there are still some unknowns surrounding this disease, which leads to far too many CH cats being euthanized before getting a proper diagnosis, making it more difficult for the awareness about this condition to grow. There is no cure or treatment for CH because it is a lack of development of the brain while the kitten is growing. CH does not affect the lifespan or quality of life of the cat. With the right person, they can grow up to lead perfectly happy and healthy lives.

For months, Michele has poured her heart and soul into Flip Flop, researching and learning everything she could about CH — giving Flip Flop not only the chance to survive but thanks to her dedication, Flip Flop is THRIVING. Overcoming all odds, Michele has also managed to secure Flip Flop a spot with a rescue that specializes in CH kitties. Flip Flop will be leaving for his new home this week.

Please join us in wishing Michele a very Happy Birthday and Happy Tails to Flip Flop. We are very proud of both of them.

Hope everyone stayed safe in this cold, snowy weather! We'd like to make a few announcements:
1. Due to the weather, the majority of businesses in the area were closed down. Even during inclement weather, staff members will be at the shelter to feed, clean, and let the dogs out.
2. With the temperatures so low, our dogs are being allowed outside for very brief periods of time to use the bathroom and stretch their legs.
3. Please remember that this change in routine can be stressful to all residents of the shelter. What increases this stress is being pelted by gravel from people deciding to use the shelter parking lot as a playground after being told not to.
4. Our staff are at the shelter 365 days a year and come to care for each dog or cat like they are our own. When the dogs are crying in pain due to completely inappropriate actions it upsets everyone. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt.
5. We hope everyone stayed safe while finding fun, non-harmful ways and locations to enjoy the snow. 🙂❄️☃️

Someone brought us a bale. You guys are the BEST.

Do any of our followers have one bale of straw they could spare. Everyone in town is sold out. We only need one bale.

Please and thank you.

Thank you Friends of Dekalb Animal Shelter, there aren’t enough words to adequately express our gratitude - we are grateful for you and the community that supports our mission of caring for our shelter pets. The basic necessities are important but the toys…the toys are something many people don’t think of yet so critical for their mental health. These toys will last them several months. What a wonderful gift!

Thank you, thank you, thank you ALL!
