November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Although it is a sad topic, awareness is important in veterinary medicine. Not all pets show early signs of cancer, which is why it is so important to get annual bloodwork for your pets, and semi-annual blood work for your senior pets. Doing routine bloodwork can help us keep your pet healthy by catching illness early, and giving your pet a chance at a longer, happier life. Today, November 18th, 2025, is National Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) Awareness, Research and Education Day. FIP is a complex, viral disease found in cats that is most of the time fatal. It is due to a mutation in the feline coronavirus (FCoV). Cats can get this virus from dirty litter boxes and food/water dishes, viral mutation, and immune response. Hygiene and the proper amount of space is of most importance to help prevent this disease. There are two ways this disease presents; Wet and Dry. Unfortunately, there is currently no preventative vaccine for this disease, and many cats succumb to this illness every year.
