Modern medicine is incredible! 🩺

This patient is a 1 year old Toy Poodle who presented to us with a complete fracture of her right distal femur.

Because of our partnership with Dr. Lockwood from Veterinary Surgery of Georgia, we are able to offer orthopedic specialist care at Good Dog Veterinary Care. We think it’s the best of both worlds!

This patient was able to have her fracture repair surgery performed in our surgical suite by a boarded orthopedic specialist while remaining under her primary DVM’s care at Good Dog Veterinary Care. Our team performs all pre operative, anesthesia, and post operative care. We find this greatly enhances the continuity of care for our patients who need orthopedic surgery.

We are wishing this patient a very speedy recovery! 🩺

"This month we wanted to dive into a question we are asked often. Why an "all-dog" practice? It is one of our favorite questions to answer!

First and foremost, we truly LOVE dogs. Dogs light us up and bring us great joy.

Secondly, focusing on canine exclusive care allows our team to truly be "dog experts" and provide the highest level of medical care. Because we aren't trying to focus on all species, we are able to dive deeper into the intricacies of dogs and their unique medical needs. Our DVM team can focus on providing the highest level of canine care while also digging deeper and exploring breed predispositions and breed specific care.

There is a huge difference in caring for a 4lb Yorkie and a 175lb Great Dane... can you imagine the difference in oral surgery, abdominal surgery, and disposition in these two dogs? We see these differences each and every day!

We know that narrowing our focus to canine only care allows our entire team to specialize our treatment plans and better serve each individual patient in our care. We look forward to giving your 'Good Dog' this high level of specialized care at their next visit with us!"

Diagnostic Testing 🩺

Modern medicine and diagnostic testing are such powerful tools in veterinary medicine!

When one of our patients came in for a routine visit, our DVM team found that on physical exam this patient had enlarged popliteal (near the knee) and prescapular (near the scapula) lymph nodes.

Enlarged lymph nodes can be a sign of lymphoma, and our DVM team knew the next step in this patient's care would be to take a closer look at the lymph nodes on a cellular level.

Our team performed a fine needle aspirate so we could more closely look at the cells under our in house microscope. Based on those findings, we took the diagnostic testing a step further and sent an additional sample to the lab for further testing.

We are thankful that we got great news back from the pathology report from our lab! This patient does not appear to have lymphoma, but rather lymphoid hyperplasia which is an increase in the normal cells found in the lymph nodes. We plan to recheck this patient in 2 weeks and to continue to closely monitor any additional changes. 🐾

Meet "Good Dog," Bandit! 🐾

Bandit is a 9 year old Shih Tzu who recently visited us for his annual exam. Bandit has a history of luxating patellas, osteoarthritis, and a heart murmur. Our DVM team is working closely with Bandit’s family to come up with a great plan to manage Bandit’s pain and improve his mobility. Bandit’s mom says Bandit works on his mobility by doing “yoga” and laying with his back legs stretched out when he is relaxing at home 💛

The Good Dog Difference: Happy Visits! 🐾

Meet 1 year old Coonhound, “Eddie.” Eddie has a history of being nervous during veterinary visits, and we are working hard to build Eddie’s confidence! His first visit with our team was in November 2023 and during his first exam he was hesitant to let our team handle him for his otoscopic examination. The solution? We are going at Eddie’s pace and not forcing restraint! Eddie has been coming to see us for monthly “happy visits” where our team spends time acclimating Eddie to the veterinary world. We practice sitting on the scale, touching ears and paws, taking a heart rate, and letting Eddie walk and sniff around the treatment area.

At his first Happy Visit in December, Eddie was nervous about getting on the scale. Through monthly Happy Visits, Eddie has made tremendous progress! At his visit last week, Eddie happily walked on the scale and let our team look into his mouth and ears. We LOVE seeing the progress that comes from a little patience and a whole lot of love. This is . Way to go Eddie and Good Dog Veterinary Care Team! 💛

Puppies will be here soon! 🐾

Dr. Alvey is working closely with “Louisa Mae’s” family to ensure both mom and puppies will have a healthy and smooth delivery. At this visit, Dr. Alvey showed Louisa Mae’s family her pregnancy radiographs. Pregnancy radiographs are so important because it helps our team predict the number of puppies to expect and allows us to see if the puppies have normal spinal and skull development. Pregnancy radiographs also allow us to measure the width of the puppies’ skulls in comparison to the width of the mom’s hips. If the puppies are measuring large, our team can be prepared for a potential c-section if needed. Our ultimate goal is always a healthy mom and puppies and diagnostic tools are so helpful in helping us achieve this goal!

This sweet 15 week old Goldendoodle had a big day with us! 🐾

He came to see us after he kept his family up all night due to vomiting. He was lethargic, restless, and not his normal puppy self! After taking radiographs, our DVM team saw that this boy decided to have several rocks as a snack and that they were currently sitting in his stomach. Our Team successfully surgically removed the rocks, and this sweet puppy is now in recovery mode 🩺

Dental care at Good Dog Veterinary Care 🩺

Did you know that 85% (!) of dogs will have some form of dental disease prior to age 3? Dental disease comes in a variety of forms. We commonly see the accumulation of plaque which can cause inflammation of the gum line and lead to pocketing between the gum and the tooth. Without treatment, plaque can creep into the pockets and cause gingivitis or bone disease.

What's the solution? We recommend a yearly dental cleaning starting between ages 1-2. This honor celebrates the top 100 fastest growing companies owned by UGA alumni, and all companies were ranked by the percentage of overall revenue growth over the last three years (2020, 2021, and 2022).
While we knew that we had been honored as one of the 100 in December, the celebration in February was a full countdown and full rankings were revealed. We are so proud to share that Good Dog Veterinary Care has the honor of being #19 on this year’s Bulldog 100 list!

As the countdown kept lowering, we were (and are!) so thankful for the team, clients, and patients who made this recognition possible. We also loved that our honor of coming in at #19 happens to be a nod to the year we opened (2019) and a nod to one of our favorite Bulldogs (Brock Bowers #19). We have drawn so much inspiration from Brock’s relentless work ethic and drive over the years. ".... Smyrna: Now Open!

Like any new beginning, we were (and are) full of excitement and hope for our second location in Smyrna. We are also fully committed to ensuring our West Cobb location continues to grow and flourish! However, in true entrepreneurial fashion, there were naturally some nerves mixed in with excitement. Would we be able to fill the schedule at our new location? Would our exceptional client care remain the same? How would we continue to pour into our team(s) and lead and serve them well at both locations?

While the butterflies were there, we knew deep down that we (and our team) were ready. We had been working together on this goal for close to a year. Our Lead Veterinarian at Good Dog Veterinary Care Smyrna, Dr. Danielle Tillis, was incredibly excited and eager to take the baton and start the race at Good Dog Veterinary Care Smyrna. We are proud to share that Good Dog Veterinary Care Smyrna officially opened in June 2023 and the warm welcome from the Smyrna community has exceeded all expectations. This is just the beginning of a bright future at our Smyrna location!

She did it! 🩺 🎓

16 week old "Poppy" came to visit for her third and final round of puppy vaccines, and she has now graduated from every three week puppy exams to semi-annual and annual exams. Most puppies will come to see us 3 times by the age of 16 weeks, and we love taking extra time at these puppy visits to set the family and dog up for lifelong healthy habits.

We love educating clients on their dog's specific breed predispositions and tendencies, and Dr. Alvey + team spent additional time with Poppy's family talking through the importance of giving Australian Shepherds a "job" to do since they were breed to herd. Poppy has six children in her new family, and we want to make sure Poppy knows it's not her job to herd her new human playmates! We cannot wait to see Poppy thrive with her forever family.

Meet "Good Dog," Daisy! 🐾

Daisy is a 16 week old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who has a stay for the day appointment with our team today. Because she experienced abnormal pain and swelling after her last round of puppy vaccines, our team wanted Daisy to spend the day with us for observation after today's round of vaccines. We gave Daisy pre-medication before giving her vaccines this morning, and she has done very well today with no pain or swelling at the vaccine injection site. We will continue this protocol for Daisy's future vaccine visit, and we loved getting in a few "puppy cuddles" while Daisy stayed for observation!

More homey and less "hospitaly" 💛

We love it when our patients make themselves at home in our hospital! We intentionally designed Good Dog Veterinary Care to feel more like a home and less like a sterile hospital. We do this by providing spacious exam rooms, large windows, wood floors, comfy chairs, and an impeccably clean and welcoming environment.

Will your dog be the next dog to make themselves at home at Good Dog Veterinary Care? We cannot wait to see you and your "Good Dog" soon!

The Importance of Medical Diagnostics 🩺

This patient came to see us as a new client with an open wound on his front toe that would not heal even after several rounds of antibiotics and bandaging. The patient was non weight bearing, and the owner was understandably frustrated since the toe was not healing properly.

Our DVM team performed several diagnostics including radiographs and a culture of the site. Due to the culture coming back as antibiotic resistant as well as several other factors including a diagnosis of fibrosarcoma, the best medical decision for this patient was a toe amputation.

Dr. Alvey and future Dr. Rivera (UGA CVM '24) partnered together to perform a successful surgery. The patient came to see us for his two week recheck today, and the surgery site is healing nicely. It is always rewarding to get to the "why" behind a medical problem, and we are thankful that the patient is doing very well post surgery. 🐾

Make yourself at home "Monty!" 🐾

Monty is a 4 year old Great Dane who just hopped right up onto "his" comfy chair during his most recent visit with us. Monty has experienced recent skin infections, but our DVM team is working hard to get his skin barrier healthy and strong.

We'll save Monty a chair anytime, and we look forward to seeing him back soon!

Do you see what we see? 👀 Two year old Golden Retriever, “Aspen” had something in her mouth that just didn’t belong! Our team found and successfully removed a stick that was lodged between 108 and 208 in Aspen’s mouth. We put Aspen on antibiotics and anti inflammatory medication as a precaution due to severe granulation of her hard palate from trauma from the stick. Aspen’s family says she is doing fantastic during her recovery at home. She has been in a great mood since we removed the stick, and they report Aspen seems to be relieved the stick is gone from her mouth. We are too! 🩺

Our owner and founder, Dr. Patrick Singletary (‘12, ‘16), always knew he wanted to go UGA College of Veterinary Medicine. Seeing Good Dog Veterinary Care featured in @ugavetmed newest admissions brochure sure is a full circle moment for this DGD! 🐾 Future veterinarians will see Good Dog Veterinary Care prominently featured as they consider making UGA CVM their home for studying veterinary medicine. Behind the Scenes ✨ Here’s the real “behind the scenes” of a veterinary build out about two weeks out from Opening Day 🐾 Opening a new practice and going through a build out isn’t glamorous… it’s a lot of moving pieces, dust, and sweat! .... SURPRISE! ✨🩺 We were at Good Dog Veterinary Care Smyrna for a site visit today, and guess who we found there? We found our Smyrna DVM dream team just hanging out! 🤩 Dr. Rice, Dr. Singletary, Dr. Weyl, and Dr. Tillis made a site visit today to check on the construction progress. It was amazing to have our Smyrna DVM team in our future treatment area! As always, thanks to our phenomenal West Cobb team + DVMs for holding down the practice while we were visiting Smyrna today. It was a full day at West Cobb, and our crew there did a great job caring for our patients!

Good Dog Veterinary Care Smyrna Construction Update! 👷 The Singletarys did a quick job site check in today... the good news is that cabinetry, surgery tables, dental tables, and exam room tables have been delivered! Next step: let’s get everything installed 🔨 Dr. Singletary decided to take matters into his own hands a little bit today and he did some work on the job site. What did he do? We’re not really sure but he sure felt productive moving around a few ladders, mops, and cabinets. Just you wait... he’ll be joining the construction crew before you know it! They looked across the street and saw the most beautiful cross full of Easter flowers at Smyrna United Methodist Church. It was the perfect end to a day full of seeing patients at Good Dog Veterinary Care West Cobb and working hard behind the scenes to ensure Good Dog Veterinary Care Smyrna is ready to open and serve Smyrna in early June. We could not be more excited to be neighbors with our friends @smyrnafirstumc and bring #thegooddogdifference to Smyrna! Thank you to our team, clients, and patients for being on the journey with us. ✨The Good Dog Difference: Client Communication ✨ Two of Dr. Alvey’s patients this morning were housemates, and both patients had a few medical conditions that we are going to work very hard to treat and overcome together. Because a lot of information was covered in the exam room today, Dr. Alvey took the time during her lunch break to email the family a detailed summary of the conversation today, the diagnostics performed today, and the treatment plan moving forward (see video). One of our DVMs’ key focus areas is that we answer all client questions and follow up with clear communication. Way to go Dr. Alvey and team for going above and beyond to care for these two patients AND their family! 🐾#thegooddogdifference #gooddogveterinarycare
