Update: Cali had surgery yesterday to repair a fractured right leg & hip dislocation. The surgery went well and she is recovering nicely💕
Be the someone that does something!
I need to give a huge shout out to Eastern Carolina Veterinary and also Freedom Bridge Animal Rescue and my new friend "T".
I can't look away when my heart tells me to help, and it's so inspiring to connect with amazing people that feel the same way! This story is a testament to that!
There is a local man, "K" that walks the roads of Old Folkestone & Tar Landing and often cuts thru my neighborhood. K sometimes has a puppy with him, not leashed, that amazingly stays close to him on the edge of these busy roads. I asked him if I could say hi to his puppy, he said yes and her name is Cali. I then asked if I could give him a leash & collar for her, for her safety. K agreed & thanked me. Most people think differently of K because of his appearance and occasional demeanor, but he was very polite and thanked me.
I seen K again 2 more times with Cali off leash and each time, I gave him another leash. He told me that he tries to leave her home, but she climbs out of a window and follows him. So I asked him if I could put an ID tag on her collar for him. K does not have a phone, so I put my phone number on the tag. I have given K a ride "home" with Cali but he had me drop him off at the end of the dirt road. I figured that if Cali ever got lost that I know the general area to find him. I have given K clothes & shoes and offered anything else that he might need for himself and Cali. I offered to take her to the vet & pay for her vaccinations & spay but we did not get that far yet.
Then at 5:50am last Saturday, I had incoming calls from 2 numbers that were not in my contacts. The one call was from Eastern Carolina Veterinary in Wilmington "ECV" informing me that Cali had been accidentally injured by a car and that gentleman, "T" was in route with her to the vet clinic.
The other call was T calling me. T explained how the accident happened. K was walking on the road, like I have seen him do & Cali was following, off leash, in the dark. T barely seen K, but did not see Cali & hit her. So T pulled over to see if Cali was ok and it was obvious that her leg was injured. He tried to talk to K and told him that Cali was alive but injured, but K's reaction was not good and K quickly walked away. So T went above & beyond, picked Cali up & drove an hour to the vet to get her help.
T and I both explained to ECV what our roles were in this, that we both were trying to do the right thing for Cali, and she totally understood that. So now there is an injured puppy needing surgery. Her owner can not afford anything and walked away.
Is this what the saying means? "No good deed goes unpunished"
ECV told me that she would check resources for help while T and I were both doing the same. I was ready to make a post about this & try to raise money for Cali's surgery, she had a fractured leg & dislocated hip. Cali would also need someone to take care of her while she recovered.
When ECV reached back out, we didn't have help yet and I was so worried!
Then she made my day! She had contacted Freedom Bridge Animal Rescue and they were going to help! And a vet tech at ECV is going to be her medical foster until they find her forever home!
Thank God for all of these kind people willing to help an innocent puppy!
I seen K yesterday walking so I stopped and told him that Cali was being taken care of.
He then asked if they would find her a good home and I told him yes. He thanked me and apologized for being a "pain" and told me to tell T that he was sorry for the things he said to him. K thanked me again & told me that there needs to be more people like me! That warmed my heart!
So let's all continue to do those good deeds and be the someone that does something! And support these Rescues!
I will follow Cali's story and post updates!
