“A tired dog is a good dog.” It’s true that regular exercise can help eliminate unwanted behaviors like chewing, garbage raiding, and excessive barking. (When a dog has too much energy, he’ll let you know!) More importantly, regular exercise can help:

Keep dogs agile and limber
Reduce tummy troubles
Improve sleep quality
Build confidence

What are the key signs that your dog is overheating?

1. Excessive Panting. One of the first signs you will see when your dog is getting too hot is excessive panting.

2. Excessive Drooling. Some dogs drool more than others. However, you should be alarmed by excessive and abnormal drooling when the temperature is hot. The thicker and stickier saliva helps the dog dissipate heat more efficiently when panting.

3. Fast and Irregular Heartbeat. In normal temperatures, a healthy dog has a slower heart rate. However, when it’s hot dogs dissipate heat through vasodilation. A fast heartbeat means that your dog is pumping overheated blood away from the vital organs to the extremities.

4. Rapid Breathing. Your dog may switch from excessive panting to deep, noisy and rapid breathing. This indicates that they are trying to get oxygen into their system for cooling relief from overheating.

5. Lethargic Behavior. Excessive heat can cause lethargy in pets. You may notice your dog napping more or having trouble standing up and walking.

6. Disorientation. In addition to lethargy, your pet may stumble when walking or be unaware of their surroundings and may for instance bump into furniture.

7. Vomiting/Diarrhea. Overheating can cause severe dehydration. This, in turn, causes gastrointestinal upset resulting in severe diarrhea and vomiting that may also have traces of blood.

8. Collapse. Intense overheating may cause your dog to collapse, and there may be other signs of neurological distress such as convulsions. At this level, it’s an emergency, and you should call an ambulance to get your pet to the Vet.

Many dog parents call the eighth month of the year ‘Dogust’ because it’s National Dog Month and includes the Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs on August 1st. This special day was made to honor the pups in our lives who were adopted or rescued.
An adopted dog's birthdate can be a bit murky since rescues or shelters may not know a pup’s exact backstory. Dogust events were created to ensure that every dog gets a birthday, even if it's not their real one.

So, on August 1st, spoil your dog with a new toy, treats or a big box of Sundays for their Dogust birthday bash. If you’re already booked on August 1st, never fear as there are plenty of other holidays you and your dog can look forward to in Dogust:

August 4th - Assistance Dog Day
August 5th - Work Like a Dog Day
August 10th - Spoil Your Dog Day
August 15th - National Check the Chip Day
August 23rd - International Blind Dog Day
August 26th - National Dog Day

LOOK at that face! Let's help Sadie finally leave the shelter!

Sadie is an almost 9 year old Labrador Retriever/Pittie mix who is a big girl, weighing in at 84 pounds. Sadie is ready for a committed, adoptive home.

Sadie landed at the shelter last May 2022 as a surrender after being in the same home for 7 years when her family was no longer able to care for her. She was adopted in January 2023 but then sadly, showed up as a stray at another local shelter. Sadie came back to this shelter who found her a foster home to go to while she waits for her adopter-one that will hopefully be FOREVER!

Sadie is very friendly and sweet. She is overall a mellow girl and is easy to have in the home. She loves people and sleeping! She can be reactive on leash to other dogs, but in her foster home she’s actually relaxed a lot and isn’t displaying that behavior nearly as much. Her foster family says she has very good manners. Sadie doesn’t jump on guests, bark at the doorbell or when deliveries come. She is not destructive nor does she counter surf. She also is house trained. Sadie is a perfect house guest!

Sadie would like to be in a home without cats, but could possibly live with another dog with a slow introduction. She would do well in a home with kids. This senior girl would just love a bed to lounge in and spend time with the people she loves most.

Sadie is posted for the Seattle Humane Society in Bellevue, WA.

If you are interested in this pretty girl, please check out Sadie's listing here:

This is a courtesy post. We urge prospective adopters to do their own evaluation.

Today is "International Friendship Day," and I wanted to celebrate the incredible relationship that Kitty Holmes and Larry had with each other. These two were practically inseparable (at home). They were always together - in all kinds of weather. And I know that Holmes still misses Larry, as do I❤️.

Please share a photo of your best friend in the comments. Or share a photo of best friends of any kind!

A. Go on vacation abroad and leave your dog with a sitter?
OR
B. Book a dog-friendly vacation closer to home?
I know which one I'd choose. 🐶

He's been at the shelter well over a year now :(
We'd love to help him finally make his way to a true forever home.
Your share could make that happen! Freckles is a cross post for the folks at the
Society of Cowlitz County.

Freckles is thought to be an Akita mix, about 8 years old.
He enjoys going for walks but he can also chill with the best of him. The benefit of a mature dog! He is described as being pretty easy going. Freckles enjoys car rides and he walks well on leash. What a good boy! Check out the video of Freckles playing! This is a dog full of life, ready to be someone's companion and walking buddy:

https://www.facebook.com/reel/261515543041263

We are told Freckles could be happy as an only pet but he does do well with other dogs in passing. So perhaps a home with another mellow, mature dog would be fine? Slow and smart introductions are always best to making lasting relationships.

It would be wonderful for Freckles to find an adoptive home and soon. Of course his adopter will need to be able to commit to his veterinary care. Ideally Freckles can be as close to being seizure free as possible.

Freckles is posted for the Humane Society of Cowlitz County located in Longview, WA. For more information about Freckles, please email: [email protected] or phone: (360) 577-0151.

This is not an Old Dog Haven dog. We urge prospective adopters to do their own evaluation.

A few days ago, I got a call from a pet parent from "long ago" - I'm talking YEARS Folks! This client wanted to bring me her 13yo Shepherd/Husky-Mix for a massage. So great to hear from past clients who want to bring their next generation to me for health, wellness, and pain management!

Jake did great and was such a good boy! This is what the client had to say after just one massage! See you again in a couple weeks, Jake!
