We did it, Friends! We collected $180 worth of cans for the Cans for Cats and Canines fundraiser, and one participant threw in an extra $20, giving a grand total of $200!

I personally learned a lot from running this fundraiser.

#1 - there are so many awesome dog and cat lovers in Socorro! Thank you for being awesome!

#2 - when traveling on the highway with bags of cans on an open trailer, you really really REALLY have to make sure they're secured πŸ˜…

#3 - it might pay off better to take cans in smaller batches. With big loads of cans they get weighed on the drive-thru scale, not the smaller scale where cans are weighed directly - not sure which one is more accurate. Also, because we had to weigh in on the vehicle scale, we were unable to separate the dog and cat bags. It was a very close competition, but I have to say, I think Team Cat came out on top.

#4 - Petsmart is expensive! I was eager to get fun, functional, and yummy items for the animals at the shelter, so I went to a pet-specific store near the recycling center. Some items were on sale, but I might have scored even more items if I had taken some more time to shop around a bit more.

Once again, thank you to all those who participated! I'm not sure I can handle hosting this every month, but perhaps quarterly? What do you all think? Would you participate in this fundraiser in the future? Let me know!

Hey there, Friends! We're at the end of our February Cans for Cats and Canines fundraiser competition, and I just have to say "wow!"

Look at all these cans! Over 50 bags! It's a very close competition; hard to say who the "winner" is! Regardless of who brought in more donations, all the animals at the Socorro Animal Shelter will benefit from all the community participation in this fundraiser.

Thank you to everyone who donated their cans! I'll post an update on how much these cans cash in for soon.

Can you guess which team just got a donation of 40 bags of aluminum cans?? 🀯 (And believe it or not there's likely another 40 bags yet to be picked up!)

Huge thank you to my helper Eric Sandoval, founder of The New Mexico Landscaping Company, for supplying the trailer, driving the truck, and bagging most of the cans.

The "out" cue can be really handy. We use it mostly when we're cooking and don't want any dogs getting under foot or any chance for fights to happen over food or space.

🟦 Our kitchen is fairly open and the flooring is the same as adjacent rooms, so we put down some blue painter's tape to help set the boundary.

πŸ‘οΈ We use blue because it's one of the colors dogs can see well, making the boundary stand out more.

🧱 Using a "physical" boundary like this helps them know where "out" is. If your space has a clear natural boundary (like a change in flooring) that can work too.

πŸ—“οΈ Consistency is key on this one! "Out" always means behind the blue line, not even just one paw over. This eliminates any confusion on where the boundary is and what we expect of them.

πŸ† Setting our dogs up for success sometimes means using temporary "training wheels" to help them learn the bigger meaning of a cue or expectation.

Do you use the "out" cue?

The February Cans for Cats and Canines fundraiser is under way!

Nahualli found this can on her walk this afternoon, giving a point to Team Canine 🐢

Throughout February I'll pick up your clean aluminum cans, or you can drop them off with me (just call/text to schedule 575-322-8305). At the end of the month I'll redeem the cans for cash and then buy items for the animals at the Socorro Animal Shelter & Adoption Center.

So, pick your team (Cat 🐱 or Canine 🐢) and collect some cans! Who's going to get more donations? Cats or Canines?

PS: Aluminum cans only please! These are things like soda cans, beer cans, sparkling water cans, energy drink cans. NO steel cans please, so no soup cans, bean cans, fruit cans, etc.

Follow along for Twix's journey to adoption!

Desert Haven Animal Rescue is an amazing place, operated by the most wonderful and caring people. It has been such a pleasure working with them and Twix - and it has only been a few days!

Be sure to follow them as well as Twix, and don't be shy - call or stop by during their public hours on Tuesdays to meet their adorable dogs and cats πŸΆπŸ±πŸ’ž

Not only will this handsome little boy steal your heart, he'll amaze you. Can you believe that at only 4 months old, Gandalf can settle and focus in public places? Here he is visiting a cafe/bookstore for the first time. Even with another unfamiliar dog around, strangers talking and moving about, and all the new sights, smells, and sounds, he behaved very well for his age. He's learned so much in a short time and has so much yet to learn. It has been so fun watching this little (soon to be not so little!) guy grow physically and mentally!

Feeling at a loss with your puppy's rambunctious energy? Reach out to tell me about it!

Meet Digory!

🐢 Male, neutered
🐢 Up to date on vaccines
🐢 Approx. 7 months old
🐢 Good with people and dogs (no info about cats)
🐢 15 different breeds!

Digory is starting to really shy away from people and is urgently in need of a loving home. This boy is very curious and loves to inspect his surroundings. He's also got a gentle playfulness about him. You can tell he really wants to connect with people, but being in the shelter for half of his young life has really taken a toll on him. Won't you help this young, playful, curious, smart, and loving boy grow into your new confident best friend?

Digory comes with some pretty great bonuses in addition to what's already been mentioned:

βœ… adoption fee sponsored!
βœ… two free training sessions (valued at $300)!

Digory is waiting for you at the T or C Animal Shelter!

WARNING: CUTENESS OVERLOAD.
Mia and her mom have been star students 🀩 I mean, just look at this little girl go! They have a whole sequence down. On the couch, off the couch, sit, place, stay, and come. And that's not all Mia knows! She knows how to back away and how to "leave it" too. Mia has been one of the most enthusiastic learners I've worked with; I'm told she often gets the zoomies during and after training sessions. Great job, Mia's Mom, for keeping learning fun! Chihuahuas often have a bad reputation when it comes to training, but Mia is here to set the record straight. Way to go Mia and Audrey! A+!

Wish your dog could do some or all of these things? Not sure where to start? Reach out to tell me all about your dog at www.canis-fidelis.com

Meet Bacon!

🐢 Male, neutered
🐢 Up to date on vaccines
🐢 Young adult
🐢 Good with people and dogs (no info about cats)

Bacon is a high energy goof ball. He's sure to make you smile and laugh within seconds. This boy could play all day, and absolutely loves tennis balls. He is so eager to learn and already knows that sitting and laying down are good boy tricks.

He's even more eager to form a special bond with a special human. Someone who would enjoy taking him out on walks, playing fetch with tennis balls, and giving him belly rubs while he chews on a tennis ball. Someone who can appreciate his love for life and tennis balls.

Bacon comes with some pretty great bonuses in addition to what's already been mentioned:

βœ… adoption fee sponsored!
βœ… two free training sessions (valued at $300)!

Bacon is waiting for you at the T or C Animal Shelter!

Meet Dasher!

🐢 Male, neutered
🐢 Up to date on vaccines
🐢 Young adult
🐢 Good with people and dogs (no info about cats)

Dasher is a high energy dude, but he shows ability to dial it down and focus. He seems to know "sit" fairly well, and if he doesn't already know "lay down" he'd have it down in minutes. He already seems to understand the concept of fetch, so "drop it" would be an easy task too - all while having fun.

This guy would make a great companion for someone who likes being active. Can't you just see yourself taking this guy out for hikes all over New Mexico? Playing fetch or tug at the campground? He's ready to be someone's fun-loving adventure buddy!

Dasher comes with some pretty great bonuses in addition to what's already been mentioned:

βœ… adoption fee sponsored!
βœ… two free training sessions (valued at $300)!

Dasher is waiting for you at the T or C Animal Shelter!

Meet Aslan!

🐢 Male, neutered
🐢 Up to date on vaccines
🐢 Approx. 7 months old
🐢 Good with people and dogs (no info about cats)
🐢 15 different breeds!

Even though he's still just a baby, he's incredibly chill. He's very polite and very gentle with greetings. Which is great because he's a big boy already and only growing! 3 of his littermates have been adopted, and they're reportedly amazing pups - no typical puppy shenanigans and no accidents in the house. Isn't that incredible?

All Aslan wants is to be cuddling in your lap. He's a little bit shy, but he's also got a playful and curious spirit. He's sure to make a great addition to just about any home.

Aslan comes with some pretty great bonuses in addition to what's already been mentioned:

βœ… adoption fee sponsored!
βœ… two free training sessions (valued at $300)!

Aslan is waiting for you at the T or C Animal Shelter!
