Hey everyone! We have had a few questions so I want to get ahead of anyone with concerns. The landlord approved to have someone come and sell fireworks right next door to us. Please know this was NOT anything we did or approved.

However, the landlord has assured me that there will be NO FIREWORKS being shot off. It is only for the sale of them. So all of the dogs entrusted to our care will be safe and not stressed. I’m sorry if this has caused concern for anyone. As always, we put your pets care first!

Ok, so I’m just gonna throw this out there. We have been planning Kyla’s Grad Party. As usual, we (Kyla and I both) have way too much going on to keep things straight and organized. LOL!

As we are wrapping things up, we realized several things. We have a larger than we like stack of invites that got returned for a variety of reasons and we haven’t had time to resend. We also realized that we have a LOT of friends from our shop, Diersen's Canine Country Club, as well as many friends (partners in crime) from the 10 years I was at General Mills that we completely forgot to send invites to. So! If you are seeing this and didn’t get an invite, please feel free to come! It’s going to be a great venue and a fun crowd! Would be fantastic to see everyone!

We are gearing up for the next round of Puppy/Obedience classes! We offer group or private! I’ve been teaching for a long time and I feel we have a really strong agenda that delivers results.

I would like to share a story that has really helped to keep me motivated! Two years ago today, we had a client come in with his brand new wild puppy! The puppy’s name is Reagan and he’s a gorgeous Australian Shepherd!

I will never forget, after the first class, I thought, we better keep an eye out for new homes for this pup because he’s a lot of puppy and I’m not sure the owner can keep up. I am happy to say, I was WRONG! His owner did all of his homework and took advantage of our Day Train program for extra help.

This is a video of Reagan being walked through Solon last summer. Notice that he walks by a pizza cardboard piece that was left on the sidewalk. He didn’t pick it up! It’s not about being in a perfect heal ALL the time. It’s about not taking the owners off their feet or eating things that can make them sick.

Hello from DCCC!
Today we want to touch base on something we have unfortunately seen a lot of lately and that is matted pets.
What is matting?
Matting refers to tangled clumps of live and loose fur in your pet’s coat. Matting comes in many forms such as small pin tangles, large masses and wide scale web matting. Matting can form on both the outer coat and the undercoat.
A frequent question is matting dangerous?
Matting is very dangerous in the fact it usually conceals hidden medical and skin conditions. Matting restricts airflow to your pet’s skin causing dry skin, hot spots, open sores, abrasions, etc. Matted fur also holds in moisture and urine allowing things such a mold, bacteria and fungus to grow. Matting can also restrict blood flow to your pet’s skin and in some cases entire extremities.
How can matting be removed?
Unfortunately in most situations matting must be removed by shaving. Due to the nature of matting, attempting to brush out matting is very painful to your pet. Because matting contains live hairs, brushing pulls on the skin and rips live hairs causing excruciating pain. Attempting to brush out matting also carries high risk factors for skin irritation and infection since many times we can not see what is under matting. Other risks include brush burn, cuts, bruising, and abrasions. To avoid undue stress and pain to your pet a clipper blade must be used to remove matting from underneath, many refer to this as the “shave down.”
What is a shave down and what are the risks?
When a pet is matted typically it must be shaved very short so the clipper blade can get under matting and release it from your pet’s skin. Shaving a matted dog is a delicate and slow process that typically reveals hidden conditions. Many times during a shave down we find skin issues, abrasions, skin discoloration, sores, open wounds, embedded debris, etc. Although the utmost caution is taken, a total shave down can result in skin irritations, nicks, cuts, razor burn, etc because we have to work so closely to the skin. A dog skin is very thin even in the healthiest of conditions. Matted pets typically have areas of skin breakdown and/or loose skin which is even thinner creating a higher risk for grooming related injuries. In severe cases you may see redness, bruising and hematomas develop during and after the grooming process. This is caused by the blood flow returning to the skin after matting has been removed. Sometimes a pet may also have behavioral changes. Typically this is short lived and often it is them feeling air across their bodies for the first time in a while, a tingling sensation from blood flow returning or simply the fact that the weight of matting has been removed.
How can matting be prevented?
Dead loose hair should be removed from your pet regularly with a thorough brushing. Long haired dogs should be brushed regularly at home to prevent tangles. Keeping your pet on a regular grooming schedule of every 4 to 6 weeks will also help keep your pet clean and at a maintainable length.

We at DCCC want what is best for your dog’s mind, body and spirit! We are here to help in any way we can and answer any questions you may have. If you believe your pet has matting or is at risk for matting please reach out to one of our stylists for more information.
Our grooming salon is open Monday through Friday!

UPDATE!!!!! I have always said everything happens for a reason. This morning, it has become official. Mr Trooper has a home! He absolutely loves his new family and they love him! I’m so excited for his future!!! Thank you everyone for all of your help getting this big goof placed!

We need help finding this big boy’s forever home! Trooper is almost 2 years old and grew up on the farm. Unfortunately, he has a prey drive so farm life is no longer an option. He does not do well with cats either.

He did live with 4 other dogs (1 German shepherd and 3 small beagle/hounds) and did well with them. However, most of the other dogs we have tried to introduce him to, he has not done well with. So I hesitate to say, ‘Good with other dogs.’

He does, however, LOVE people and kids! He grew up with lots of toddlers and young kids. He has been at our shop for a few weeks to socialize him and working on some obedience. He is neutered and current on shots.

Please help spread the word! He needs a new home asap. Thanks everyone!

We still have openings Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Bring those pups in to get all nice and clean!

Sending out a HUGE thank you to a fantastic local family, the Kerkove’s! This morning my team couldn’t get to the shop to take care of the dogs. If you know me, I was a mess! Even with my broken leg, I told my daughter she was going to have to help me get to the truck so we could try to get there. I even texted my neighbor to see if they knew the status of our road, which wasn’t good…shocking!

Late last night, I remembered they live close to the shop and maybe they could get there. They immediately said they were happy to help. This morning, despite getting stuck in the parking lot, dealing with a frozen lockbox, frozen door locks and a trip to the local hardware store to get de-icer, they made it into the shop!

Maddie and her amazing Mom, Janelle, served the dogs their breakfast and got everyone pottied and tucked back in. Their son, Tanner, shoveled the sidewalks, the back door and the dog yard! He took pride in making sure all the pen gates would open and that there were places for the little dogs to squat without getting snowy hinnies!

If you see this amazing family around town, please tell them thank you!!!! This storm has been ‘the storm of all storms!’ and we wouldn’t have made it through without them.

THANK YOU KERKOVE FAMILY!!!!!

Good morning! I would like to ask everyone to bear with my team the next couple weeks. We are a bit short staffed but have new staff being trained.

To add to the chaos, Sunday evening, I tripped over my dog and severely broke my ankle/lower leg. I’m the type of person that tries not to let something like that slow me down.

I truly thought that in a day or two, I could use a scooter and still help my team. I’m realizing today that that might not be a realistic expectation at least until til after surgery. I’m trying to support them as much as I can from home.

So if the phone doesn’t get answered right away, know that we will get back to you. It may even be me calling from home. LOL! We appreciate all of you!!!!
