Updated 1:10pm-- 4-23-24-- The Rancheros Visitadores, in partnership with Wrangler, have donated more than $1.53M to the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara over the past 12 years. Raised in conjunction with the Rancheros Visitadores’ annual ride, over 750 Rancheros from 37 states and 6 countries typically gather together each spring. For the first time since 2022, the Rancheros are expected to parade through the streets of Solvang to old Mission Santa Inés on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 2:30pm. Community members will gather to witness a blessing of the riders and a check presentation to the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara. This year alone the Rancheros Visitadores have raised more than $155,000.
As the largest contributor to Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara greatly appreciates the generosity of the Rancheros Visitadores and their partners. These funds support research and supportive care programs at Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, helping residents all over Santa Barbara County on their journey, with, through and beyond cancer. Lori Willis, Executive Director of the Cancer Foundation of Santa Barbara shares, “The funds raised by members of the Rancheros Visitadores, and its partners, support important programs utilized by hundreds of cancer patients here in our community. These essential programs, including oncology nutrition, genetic counseling, and oncology social work, help patients reduce stress, manage side effects and improve healing.” One such patient is Janice, who faced a uniquely daunting challenge during the global anxiety of 2020: a diagnosis of endometrial cancer, an unwelcome finding during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was such an anxious time in my life, but everyone I came into contact with at the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center made the situation as relaxing, reassuring and pain-free as they could,” said Janice. A significant part of what made the treatment easier was the proximity of the Ridley-Tree Cancer Center’s Solvang facility to Janice’s Santa Ynez home. While she underwent surgery and radiation in Santa Barbara, Janice was able to have her chemotherapy administered in Solvang. Janice’s chemotherapy regimen took several weeks, and each infusion lasted between 4 – 5 hours. It makes for a long day and typically patients feel exhausted and depleted, making the proximity of the Solvang facility a game-changer.

Updated 11am-- 4-03-24-- As part of their ongoing effort to address the feline overpopulation in northern Santa Barbara County, Santa Barbara Humane will offer cat owners the chance to have their cat spayed or neutered for free at their Santa Maria campus. The free spay and neuter surgeries, which were made possible thanks to a generous donation from ResQCats, are a
safe and humane way to prevent unwanted litters of kittens. An unaltered female cat can birth as many as 180 kittens
in her lifetime, and those kittens often end up being part of the 3.2 million cats who enter animal shelters annually.
According to Dr. Katie Marrie, Santa Barbara Humane’s Chief Veterinary Officer, surgical sterilization also provides
health benefits to cats, “Spaying your female pet helps reduce the risk of mammary cancer and uterine infection, and
neutering males prevents them from getting testicular cancer.”
Owned cats won’t be the only ones who will benefit from free spay and neuter surgeries this April, as Santa Barbara
Humane will also be holding special Community Cat Spay Days at their Santa Maria campus. On Thursday, April 11,
2024, and Wednesday, April 24, 2024, community members will have the chance to bring in an unlimited number of
unowned community cats for free spay and neuter services. Those interested can learn more about helping community cats and Community Cat Spay Days at
sbhumane.org/community-cats. While no appointments will be necessary for the Community Cat Spay Day events, all other visits to Santa Barbara Humane’s veterinary clinic, including those for free spay or neuter surgeries, are by appointment only. Appointments
can be booked at sbhumane.org/clinic or by calling (805) 964-4777 x 205

Updated 9:38am-- 2-17-24--Santa Barbara Humane is inviting the Santa Maria community to attend their inaugural Wild West Fest on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Santa Maria Elks Lodge. The event will last from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Funds raised through the event will help make it possible for the Santa Maria campus to place pets into homes and offer critical resources like low-cost or free veterinary care and affordable dog training that keep animals out of the shelter system. In 2023, more than 900 animals were adopted from the organization’s Santa Maria campus. But adoptions aren’t the only success that Santa Barbara Humane will be celebrating: last year, the organization provided $423,761 of low-cost or free medical services to 5,096 community-owned animals at their Santa Maria clinic. This accounts for 85% of the $514,799 in medical services that Santa Barbara Humane provided through its donor-supported TLC Fund in 2023. Guests of the Wild West-themed event will enjoy the lively tunes of the Just Dave Band as they sip signature drinks, participate in exciting activities, raffles, and auctions, and mingle with like-minded animal
lovers. Individual tickets are available for purchase now. For more information, or if interested in sponsoring the
event, visit sbhumane.org/WildWest
