Amelia Newcomb's Equine Services works to develop a trusting and confident relationship between horse and rider. Using theories from both natural horsemanship and classical dressage, Amelia creates a holistic approach to training that adapts to fit the needs of each individual horse and rider. Her approach incorporates all pieces of horsemanship from basic groundwork and ground manners to advanced

dressage movements. The emphasis is always on the foundation with the basic trust, understanding, and relaxation for both horse and rider as the building blocks to harmony and progress. After starting over 100 horses, Amelia has developed a step by step method that gently and methodically introduces the young horse to accept and carry a rider. She believes that the first couple months under saddle are the MOST important in any horses' long career. It is essential that the initial training is done correctly and carefully to ensure that each horse develops confidence in themselves and trust in the rider.

๐Ÿ’– All week, in honor of Valentine's day this week, weโ€™ve been celebrating our love of horses in my community. Horses are amazing, generous, and kind souls, and I truly cherish every moment that I spend together with my horses. ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿฆ„

๐Ÿ™‹ Now, I donโ€™t know about you, but I want more than anything to be the best rider I can be for my horse. ๐Ÿ˜“ I feel guilty when I find myself out of balance, sitting crooked, or holding too tightly on the reins. (And yes, this does still happen at times, even with me). ๐Ÿ’ฏ

๐ŸŽ The better your rider position, the easier it will be for your horse to do their job, and the easier it will be for you to communicate with your horse! ๐Ÿคฉ

๐ŸŽ‰I am so excited because Iโ€™ve been working really hard over the last several weeks putting together a new training on Rider Position. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Please comment below "RSVP" and I'll send you the link to select a date and time that works for you to attend. ๐Ÿ“…

๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ One of the most common mistakes I see is riding with the reins way too long. Yes, of course, we want to be soft and we won't want to hang on the reins, but if your reins are too long, it will be difficult to find connection with your horse and both you and your horse will be out of balance. ๐Ÿซข If your trainer is constantly reminding you to shorten your reins or you find that they constantly slip longer as you ride, then this video is for you! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ Weโ€™re diving into why short reins matter, how they impact your connection with your horse, and, most importantly, how to keep them at the correct length.

๐ŸŽ Short reins arenโ€™t just about appearance or controlโ€”they are essential for effective riding. Hereโ€™s why ๐Ÿ‘‡:

๐Ÿ›‘ ๐’๐š๐Ÿ๐ž๐ญ๐ฒ ๐… If your reins are too long and your horse spooks, youโ€™ll struggle to regain control quickly. ๐Ÿ’ฏ A properly shortened rein helps you manage your horseโ€™s energy in unpredictable moments.

A rein that goes from slack to taut repeatedly is more uncomfortable for your horse than a steady, soft contact. ๐Ÿ˜“ Consistent connection creates a more comfortable and predictable feel for your horse.

Maintaining the correct rein length is key to establishing a rounder frame and connection with your horse, allowing them to move in a balanced, engaged way... If you're ready to read all my top tips for keeping your reins the correct length, comment "contact" below and I'll send you the link to read all my tips and watch the video! ๐ŸŽฅ

๐Ÿ”ฅ Today is the LAST day to enroll in the Groundwork Superpack course and I donโ€™t want you to miss out! ๐Ÿด When you start your groundwork practice now, you will have the confidence to go on to new and exciting adventures with your horse this summer!

๐ŸŽ Long-lining, piaffe work, and other in-hand techniques are usually thought to be reserved for โ€˜the mastersโ€™. They are highly effective, but complicated in both theory and application. โœ…

๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ But hereโ€™s my secret: a riderโ€™s introduction to in-hand work should start the first time they lead a horse. And itโ€™s not complicated to integrate the fundamental exercises into your daily routine! ๐Ÿ’ฏ

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ In-hand work doesnโ€™t (and shouldnโ€™t!) start at teaching piaffe. Everything you do in the saddle you can do from the ground! ๐Ÿคฉ

๐Ÿค” Think about any problem or concept youโ€™re having trouble with in your training or even in your daily handling (ie wonโ€™t trailer load), you can solve it with in-hand work!

๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค” Think about yourself in 2 months, would you like to be struggling with the same problemsโ€ฆor would you prefer to have a toolbox of exercises to solve them?

๐Ÿ‡ Everything you need to teach yourself all the skills to train your horse all the basics of riding, and even the more advanced dressage movements is inside my Groundwork Superpack course. ๐ŸŽ

Hereโ€™s everything that is included ๐Ÿ‘‡:

๐Ÿฆ„ The Science of Horsemanship
๐Ÿฆ„ The Essential Exercises (Rope Halter Groundwork)
๐Ÿฆ„ Problem Solving (trailer loading, clipping, flag work, young horses ect)
๐Ÿฆ„ Dressage Groundwork
๐Ÿฆ„ Piaffe Training
๐Ÿฆ„ Lunging and Long Lining
๐Ÿฆ„ Groundwork for Riding

๐Ÿฅต Training your horse by yourself is hard, you need the right support and education to get you there. In-hand work and this course can give you that. ๐Ÿคฉ

Tomorrow is the last day to enroll in the Groundwork Superpack course. The doors close tomorrow night at 11:55 pm PT. ๐Ÿ‘‡ Comment below "groundwork" and I'll send you the link to join my Groundwork Superpack course.

Are you having trouble turning? Is your horse drifting? Are you pulling on the inside rein with little success? You're not alone! ๐ŸŽ Many riders encounter this issue, and the more you pull on the inside rein, the more your horse over-bends and drifts to the outside. ๐ŸŽฅ In this video, we'll explore why this happens and share a simple, effective trick to regain control.

๐Ÿ’ช Over-bending occurs when a rider relies too heavily on the inside rein to steer, neglecting the crucial role of the outside aids. While the inside rein creates flexion, itโ€™s the outside rein, leg, and upper thigh that turn your horse's body and maintain balance. ๐Ÿ’ฏ When these aids are forgotten, your horse may turn its head inward but the body will drift outward, disrupting the circle or line of travel. ๐Ÿซฃ

๐Ÿ˜ฌ This not only throws your horse off balance but also places them on the forehand, making steering and maintaining a rhythm more challenging.

If your horse starts to over-bend and drift to the outside, try this simple exercise ๐Ÿ‘‡:

โญ•๏ธ ๐’๐ฆ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐‚๐ข๐ซ๐œ๐ฅ๐ž ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐ญ - If you feel like you canโ€™t turn left, first redirect your horse to the right and ride a small circle to reestablish control over the right rein and right leg.

โ†ฉ๏ธ ๐‘๐ž๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‹๐ž๐Ÿ๐ญ - After completing the small circle, guide your horse back to the left, but avoid over-bending. Focus on keeping your horse slightly straighter or even a subtle counter-flexion... Comment "bend" below and I'll send you the link to watch the video and read the full post where I go more in-depth about the bending aids.

Happy Riding! ๐Ÿฅณ

๐Ÿ˜ฑ Something catches your horse's eye and in a split second, your horse turns into a giant flying kite! ๐Ÿช

You feel your heart pounding in your chest, you try to stay calm, breathe, and shout โ€“ โ€œWoah, woah, woah.โ€ ๐Ÿ™ˆ But your horse is on high alert and paying zero attention to you!

๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ Have you ever felt like this?

๐Ÿฅต I have, and itโ€™s terrifying to be handling or riding a horse who is completely out of control and unaware that you even exist.

๐Ÿคซ Hereโ€™s the secret to developing trust and communication with your horse that most people missโ€ฆ โ€œAn ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cureโ€ and a daily groundwork practice is the key to establishing that routine each and every day. ๐Ÿ“…

๐ŸŽ With Groundwork you can develop a relationship to redirect your horseโ€™s attention to you before they turn into a flyaway kite! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

๐Ÿ“บ In Sundayโ€™s Groundwork Webinar I announced the inaugural launch of Ameliaโ€™s Ultimate Groundwork Superpack. ๐ŸŽ

This is the best course if you are feeling like your horse ๐Ÿ‘‡:

>is out of control and dangerous
>ignores your aids
>is nervous and tense
>struggles to physically do what you ask
>is not making progress in the riding

๐Ÿด With groundwork, you can break down the aids and communicate to your horse in a way that they understand. ๐ŸŽถ

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Here are some direct quotes from riders who have taken a groundwork course from me. This could be you! ๐Ÿ‘‡

โ€œI have more confidence.โ€ ๐Ÿคฉ
โ€œMy horse is quieter and more obedientโ€ ๐Ÿฆ„
โ€œWe have a partnership.โ€ ๐Ÿ’•
โ€œI understand her reactions and how she learns.โ€ ๐Ÿ‘
โ€œI feel more relaxed and can communicate clearly.โ€ ๐ŸŽ‰
โ€œMy horse walked into the trailer without hesitation.โ€ ๐Ÿด
โ€œI felt my horse soften for the first time.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜
โ€œMy gelding FINALLY understands how to do a half-pass!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

๐Ÿ’– Having the relationship that you want with your horse isnโ€™t hard, you just need the right support and education to get you there. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Comment "groundwork" below and I'll send you the link to learn more and join my Ultimate Groundwork Superpack courses.
