Wishing everyone a happy 2025 filled with more views shared between the ears of a horse!

Dr. Stevens and Dr. Zeller had a memorable start to the new year participating in the ‘Best Day Ever’ in the 136th Rose Bowl Parade with our longtime client and friend Victoria, founder of Mini Therapy Horses.

It is our honor and privilege to provide care for this herd of miniature horses who spend their year offering joy and solace to children and adults alike. They routinely visit Shriners children’s hospital, VA hospital, and play an important role in the LA County Crisis response team. Thank you for all that you do! It was fun to walk alongside them today!

Our team of experienced veterinarians observes each exam and uses this data to compliment their overall clinical picture and revise the plan for the upcoming week.

Equinosis Q is comprised of three wireless sensors. Two sensors are placed on the horse's poll and the highest point of the hindquarters. These measure asymmetry of head and pelvic movement. A third sensor is placed on the right forelimb to allow the program to know which leg is hitting the ground when. An objective report is generated for each phase of the exam.

This week we will take a closer look at the Equinosis Q system. This system of wireless inertia sensors provides our rehab team an objective way to monitor a patients progress through their rehab or conditioning program. Each patient has a progress exam prior to any increases in workload to ensure they are adapting adequately and the condition is not worsening. This is one of the many advantages of a veterinary supervised rehabilitation program. Rehab is not a linear process and knowing when to back off is just as important as knowing when to progress to the next step.

Meet the Staff Monday!

Dr. Carin Zeller graduated from UC Davis 2016. She started her veterinary career by serving in the United States Army Veterinary Corps. The highlight of her Army service was providing care for the horses who perform funerals in Arlington National Cemetery. She joined her dad in practice in 2021 and has developed a love of sports medicine.

In her spare time she enjoys learning from her horse Griffin, and spending time with her dogs. Annie and Jessie were both OG puppies-in-training with Dr. Stevens. Her husband and her just welcomed their first daughter!

The foundation of every rehabilitation center is the facility. Whithethorne offers the idyllic setting for a well controlled return to function, increase strength and fitness, or to rest and recover. The facility boasts grass pasture turnouts, two international sized jumping arenas with FIBAR footing mixture and a 1/4 mile exercise track. We have a variety of stall sizes that allows for progression of freedom during the healing process.

The Sound Regenerative Laser Therapy (RLT) is a key component of our program. The challenge with healing tendon and ligament injuries in the equine athlete is preventing formation of inelastic scar tissue that is prone to re-injury. The exceptionally powerful and focused laser light energy of the RLT has the proven ability to pe*****te deep enough in the horse's body to reach the target sites of injury, setting it apart from other laser models on the market. A typical protocol requires multiple treatments (2-3 x weekly) for several weeks to encourage the fibers of tendons and ligaments to optimally align. The ultimate goal of healing is restoring elasticity, tolerating load and preventing re-injury.

Meet the Staff Monday!

Dr. Richard Stevens almost needs no introduction. He is one of the few that can say he has only had one job! Dr. Stevens graduated from Colorado Veterinary School in 1981 and joined Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital as an intern that same year and continued to build Conejo Valley Equine as premier ambulatory practice. He enjoys complex lameness cases, dentistry and caring for horses throughout all stages of their life. This rehabilitation center is a natural extension of his sports medicine expertise.

Dr. Stevens is rarely seen without a yellow Labrador puppy-in-training. Sherwood is his current companion. He also enjoys managing his avocado farm!
