Over the weekend Odin and I attended Mescal Marness MSSA trial in Benson AZ. This was his first trial! He completely exceeded my expectations. He ran in the nursery and novice classes both days. Saturday was in an arena and Sunday was out in the field. On Saturday he was 2nd in nursery, and 1st in novice. On Sunday he was 2nd in nursery, and 5th in novice. We also went home with high combined for nursery and novice!

Oh, what a day! I started the morning off by going to a friend's house to help get some sheep sheared. It was fun, educational, and a good time. Only one sheep got away but she didn’t get skipped, thanks to Liane and Cody.

Once the shearing was done with, my sheep got loaded up and we headed home. They had a new member of the family to meet.

At home, I miraculously was able to sort my working flock from my moms and babies. Half my working flock went into their pen and the other half went to graze. I had Odin in the truck and decided to use him to get them all back in the pen. He did amazingly well for a pup who has only worked in the arena and open field. It was his first time working around the barn and he got the job done beautifully.

The sheep were all put up so it was time for them to be introduced to Miss Jasmine. Jasmine is the newest addition to the property and is our first livestock guardian dog. She is 4 months old and has been with us for a week now. Her introduction to the flock went as well as I could hope. She is fantastic and so loved 💜.

This last week has been so busy and so much fun! Here’s a recap of our adventure to Colorado!

We left late Monday night since sleep was out of the question. Tyler and I were too excited and just wanted to get on the road. The drive was pretty uneventful (thankfully). We made it to our Airbnb Tuesday afternoon and were so blown away by the views we had and the kindness of our host. We settled in and got ready for Wednesday. I spent Wednesday and Thursday at a clinic learning from Scott Glenn! I learned so much and met some great people and dogs.
I worked with Odin the most at the clinic and was so very impressed with how he progressed. When we got there Odin didn’t have his flank commands and didn’t really have a gather either. I had just lightly started him a few weeks before this trip. Scott was truly amazing to work with, I learned that I need to stop trying to prevent the mistakes from happening and just be there to support my dog through the mistakes.
On to the trial! We (Kate and myself) competed Saturday in the novice class of the Hotchkiss trial. This was our first out-of-state trial and our first time working range sheep! We had two runs, our first went well. Kate had a nice outrun and lift, the fetch was not very straight but the sheep were pushing hard on her trying to get to the exhaust pen. But she took her cues well enough to get the sheep over to me by the pen. We also managed to pen them. Our course time was three minutes and we got it done with about 30 seconds left. Our second run was good but I couldn’t get the gate open on the pen so the sheep ended up behind the pen. We worked at getting them back to the front side of the pen but I gave a wrong flank cue and they ran straight back to the exhaust. Kate tried her hardest to catch them but was just too far behind them. Our first class was our best and we ended up winning it! I’m so so proud of all my dogs and very thankful to my husband Tyler for going with me and supporting me in this journey of sheep and sheepdogs.

Happy 1st birthday Odin! We celebrated on the road home from hotchkiss, taking a small detour to the four corners. It was the first time for all of us to visit the four corners monument. Defiantly a cool place.

So excited to have the field being used! ❤️

Woke up to a world of white. Didn’t expect the snow until mid morning.
Not very often do we get snow here in southern Arizona.
