Mark Twain rented cats to keep him company during his travels since he couldn't bring his own beloved pets on the road. In 1906, while staying in Dublin, New Hampshire, he rented three kittens including two he named "Sackcloth" and "Ashes." One of his rented companions was a black kitten who would sleep in his bed. Twain, a lifelong cat lover who owned up to 19 cats at one time at his Connecticut home, found this arrangement helped ease his loneliness while away from his own feline family. π± π
