Sonoma Dog Camp Dog day care and sleepovers. Making it easy to include a dog in your life. Sleep Overs can be arranged for regular day care dogs.

Our Day Care provides a safe, secure and social place for your Camper to romp when he wants to romp, rest when he wants to rest and get his ears scratched or belly rubbed from time to time. During our enrollment evaluation we verify every dog is current on vaccinations and has the necessary social skills to be a good Camper. We also determine the Camper’s play style for assignment to the appropria

te playgroup when he visits us. Overnight care is available 365 days a year for just one night or for as many days or weeks as you need. Our sleep over area accommodates 10 dogs a night who sleep together in a home-like setting and are looked after by a person who stays with them throughout the night. And when a Camper needs to tidy up, he can get a Bath, which includes herbal ear wash and a nail trim.

Dog Camp at 20. Scenes Along the Way. We’ve Learned a Thing or Two

We try our best to learn as we go and make changes – in our thinking, our building, our practices, our team – as needed.

Chalkboard - One of the first things we bought for Camp was the chalkboard we use to check in Campers. We found it at a silent auction fundraiser for Prestwood Elementary School and knew we had to have it for Camp. After years of erasing the entire board when the list of Campers changed, a member of our team, Mireya .olive, said, “You know, there’s this permanent marker that looks like chalk. We could use it to draw the grid and then we wouldn’t need to redraw the grid every time we change the names”. And, just like that, we saved an hour and lots of grumbling and fumbling with the yardstick every time we update the Camper board.

Jumpers – Terriers like to jump. Especially Jack Russell Terriers. We found ourselves at nearly eye level with these two one day. A lesson in crate management.

Treats in the lobby – When we had a store on the north side of the building, we had a treat dispenser in the lobby. April helped us to make that a short-lived experiment.

Dog houses – Are just not all that interesting to dogs. Not when there’s so much else to do. And sniff.

Pit bulls – It wasn’t until Crystal joined our team that we even considered enrolling Pit Bulls and Pit mixes at Camp. Not long after she graduated from high school, Crystal set up her own 501c (3) organization to educate about and rescue and re-home Pits. She helped us understand that, like any other dog if well-socialized, Pit Bulls do just fine in day care. Since then, we’ve met and enrolled some amazing ones.

Dog Camp at 20. Scenes Along the Way. Cooling it Down

Today is the last day of Spring. Summer Solstice occurs tomorrow at 1:50 PDT. We have hot days in Sonoma – including temps of 100+ in the height of Summer. At Camp we deal with that in a few ways:

* Water - in the air, the pools, the constantly refilled water bowls, and on the Trinity River rock in the play yards. We use our infra-red thermometer to check the temperature of the rock to know when to wet it down.

* Fans – misting fans and our always on platoon of ceiling fans in the barn.

* Lazy play and lazy splays on the cool concrete floor of the barn.

* The occasional hat – as modeled by Roxie.

Dog Camp at 20. Where are They Now?

Luis Garcia was with us for 6 years. He joined the team in 2015 and left in 2021. He was an outstanding example of the kind of person who makes Dog Camp what it is. Sometimes called Mr. Softee, Luis is a dog magnet.

Luis and his brother Danny, who was also on the team for a while, joined us for the week we moved Camp to Novato during the 2017 fire. Luis's dog Oso was among the 14 Campers we had along with us on that adventure.

Here's what Luis had to say about his time at Camp:

I loved the rain at Dog Camp. There is something so special about the sound of rain on the barn roof. Most of the Campers knew that was a time to relax.

My favorites Campers? There are so many to choose from! Willow D, Lilah, Olive, Charlie H, and the rest of my Doodle/Poodle pack.

For the past four years I’ve worked as a Security Officer at the Graton Resort and Casino.

Dog Camp at 20. Scenes Along the Way. In all kinds of weather

New and prospective Camper parents often ask, “what about when it’s raining?”, “what about when it’s cold?”, “what about when it’s hot?”. Here are a few scenes from over the years to answer the rain and cold questions – which are mostly dealt with by raincoats, jackets, Camper self-regulation, and a very toasty commercial heater in the Barn. We’ll save “hot” for tomorrow. The last photo of the day today is an example of one of the “loaner jackets” we keep on hand for Campers who left their own at home. Pretty fancy.

Dog Camp at 20. Scenes Along the Way. And the Moon at Night

One of the benefits of being the overnight team at Camp is how beautiful it is here after dark. Especially when the moon is full. After around 9:00 it gets pretty quiet on our stretch of Broadway, unless there’s a football game at the High School. Mostly the cars - passing by intermittently - sound like waves on a beach. And, sometimes the owls like to hoot to one another – usually around 3:00 in the morning.
