We're all scrambling to find new ways to help our dogs stay cool, and also to alleviate some of their boredom from being cooped up in the house during this otherworldly heat.

You might want to try a couple of the tricks we use at our center to make sure the dogs stay comfy:

• Frozen chunks of watermelon or other melon are a welcome and refreshing snack for most dogs. Remove the rind and any seeds, then dice and freeze. These all-natural "pupcicles" have the added bonus of a high water content -- very useful to keep your doggo hydrated on a hot day.

• You can't go wrong with plain ice cubes. Many dogs enjoy crunching on them, while others will play with them till they're melted and gone. No sticky mess!

• Fill a kiddie pool with water and let your dog splash. Locate the pool in the shade if you're able. Toss a few ice cubes in the water so he can “hunt” for them.
