I make clay paw prints during my in home visits using Veterinary Wisdom's ClayPaws kits. I make them on site and then leave them for the family to bake. Recently I helped a family who chose to decorate their print with shells before baking. They shared a photo of the finished product, and it was so beautiful that [with permission, and name blocked out for privacy] I had to share. ❤️

Anyone have room in your home and hearts for one (or more) of these "teenagers" (AKA juveniles)? From personal experience I can promise they are MUCH easier than human teenagers! 😻

‼️Santa Cruz community, we need your help‼️

We are overflowing with adoptable animals. Staff have been exhausting placement with rescues and fosters but we continue to see high numbers of intakes. To continue helping the public with animals in need, we are calling on adopters to come in and meet their new companions this weekend.

We have 46 canines, 160 felines and 23 rabbits/roosters and guinea pigs looking for homes. All felines are $50 and all other species are half off.

Support your local community open admission Shelter so they can continue to support incoming unhoused animals.

Can’t adopt? Share this post with someone who can.

Adoption fee includes vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative, microchipping, licensing, and spay/neuter surgeries. Staff is on site from 11am to 6pm to match interested adopters with adoptable pets.

We are open from 11am to 6pm every day and located at 1001 Rodriguez Street at the corner of 7th Avenue in Santa Cruz. Our telephone number is 831-454-7200. Visit our website at scanimalshelter dot org or click on link in Bio.

We sat down with Dr. Benson to chat about what she feels are important things to remember during your euthanasia appointment. She expressed how important it is to be present during the appointment, and not to stress over the small things! 💜

Promising study on novel treatment for canine cancer!

A Yale researcher developed a vaccine that can slow or halt certain cancers in dogs. And it could be used to treat humans in the future.

November is National Adopt A Senior Pet Month! 🥰
Senior pets are often overlooked by potential adopters due to common misconceptions. This National Day was founded to help highlight all of the amazing senior pets in shelters RIGHT NOW who are vibrant, sweet, loving, and full of life left to live.

Like Daisy, who has been with our friends at Nevada SPCA Life-Saving Shelter for 215 days and counting! At nearly 8 years old, Daisy is still a bright, bubbly, and playful girl who loves belly rubs. She has chronic dry eye, a condition that has resulted in the loss of one eye. But, the treatment for her remaining eye is a simple daily drop and regular veterinary care.

Daisy loves playing in the water. She is an athletic dog who knows basic commands and is obsessed with tennis balls. She has used her time in the shelter to learn new tricks and can't wait to find her forever home.

There are tons of senior dogs just like Daisy in shelters in YOUR town (But if you live in Nevada, definitely check her out!!!) who are full of life, and love, and will make incredible companions. 💗
Open your heart & home to a senior dog - you won't regret it!

"The pain of pet loss is real. And the grief from pet loss is valid...
Our pets share our homes, not because they pay the mortgage, but because they fill it floor to ceiling with love and laughter. Their joy gives us something to look forward to every single day."

The grief of losing a pet is crushing; and yet it is too often minimized. This talk explains why the pain of pet loss is different and why it is valid. Dr. H...

My website has a blog now! Our first post is on disaster preparedness for pet parents. I realize this is not specifically related to animal hospice or end of life care, but as we wrap up National Disaster Preparedness Month (September), I thought it was a good place to start 😸

Ready and Steady: Disaster Preparedness for Pets by Peaceful Paws Veterinary Hospice | Sep 27, 2023 | Blog As fire season again looms over California, preparing for a natural disaster is on our minds. And with tropical storms, hurricanes, and flooding all over the news lately, there seems to be a ne...

As a self-identified dog person, I’m guilty of buying into the stereotype that cats are selfish, aloof as****es. But new research suggests I may have judged them too harshly. In a study published in the journal Current Biology on September 23, cats…

Shout out to a true hero, Carie Broeker of Peace of Mind Dog Rescue!

CNN HEROES ALL-STAR TRIBUTE RECAP ✨
Wow! What a night. Thank you to everyone who cheered us on with your texts, emails, social media posts, and watch parties.

We were thrilled when Justin Theroux and his sweet rescue dog, Kuma, came to sit at our table and ultimately presented our Hero award! We were humbled when legendary songwriter Diane Warren grabbed us and said, "Contact me, I want to help you!" And we were honored to be recognized among so many other noteworthy organizations and individuals doing life-changing work.

We also offer our heartfelt congratulations to Nelly Cheboi for being selected as the 2022 CNN Hero of the Year for her incredible work helping Kenyan schoolchildren!

We made strong friendships with the other heroes and their associates. We know we will all be supporting each other into the future.

We have added hundreds of new supporters to our mailing list, raised over $170,000 so far, and made connections that will strengthen the future of POMDR for years to come.

We plan to offer a virtual conference next year to help others start similar services in their area.

We look forward to all we can do to help more senior dogs and senior people in the years to come.

Enjoy the Holiday Season!
