I very rarely take the time to share some of the touching moments that occur with regularity in my veterinary practice life. This sweet little angel’s puppy, Bohdi, needed help this afternoon. I was able to help him get on the path to recovery. Thank you Harper for helping me still feel as jazzed about my profession as the day I graduated way back in May of 1992!

I wanted to take this opportunity to let my client family know about my Mom's passing on January 11th at around 5:45am. I was with her when she passed as I was by her side all night for her last 3 nights to be there to comfort her and tend to her in her journey home to her Lord. Mom (and Dad) had been such an amazing supporter of mine in my life as well as in my veterinary practice. For the last 5 years I have dedicated time out of my day to either visit her for lunch at the Glenwood or Greenville Nursing and Rehab, tend to her needs when she lived at my house after being left bedridden and unable to even pick up her arms or legs in bed after hospitalization with COVID or most recently for the last couple of years eating breakfast with her almost every morning at the Hitz Nursing Home in Alhambra. I know I have been late for appointments when she need more care than what time I had to spare in my day. I appreciate the grace my loyal clients have shown me in this journey with Mom. She was very proud of the work I did in my practice and community, and I wish she would have been blessed with the strength to have actually helped me in my clinic. It would have been a dream come true. Getting to hold her great-grandchild, Penni Rose Schreiber was a dream come true. It was one of her happiest moments in the last couple of years. Up until her last days she would still ask her grandson, Will Schreiber , (Penni's dad) about how her great-granddaughter was doing and loved to hear Penni's happy chattering in the background while we talked to Will while eating breakfast. Taking care of my Mom was one of the greatest honors and duty I have had. I appreciate so much the love and sympathy that my client family has shown me thus far. I also have enjoyed so much getting to love on my patients during this time of grieving. It is an honor to be their veterinarian. Thank you so much for your understanding while I take time away from my practice to pay my final respects to my amazing mother whose beautiful smile and positive never give up approach to life will be greatly missed, but lives on in me.

Sincerely,
Doc

"❤ Last weekend home owners found a 5-6 week old female eastern grey squirrel in their yard, crying and walking up to them, dehydrated and malnourished. They brought her in. It was apparent something had happened to mom and after a day or two she had braved her way down to seek help. They were told to please watch and listen for siblings and to call if they found any. The following day another call came, her brother had showed up mid day, very dehydrated and covered in fleas.
Here they are a couple days later, cleaned up, rehydrated, full bellies, and back together.
THIS is why when you can’t reunite with mom you ALWAYS make every effort to find them all, and this is why you NEVER, EVER separate siblings ❤"

We now have power! Even without our normal line power and running on generator power, Candi and I saved the life of very sweet dog that was extremely sick with a terrible pyometra. This is where the uterus becomes engorged/filled with pus due a severe infection. This poor dog’s uterus weighed almost 10 pounds. She weighed 54 # prior to surgery! She is currently stable after a tedious surgery.

I hope everyone stays safe during this severe winter weather! It is extremely important to pay attention the housing needs, and extra food and water demands during this inclement weather for your outside animals/livestock.

It is late, but I could not rest until I shared how honored I felt receiving these two gifts at my last regular school board meeting tonight! I was very moved when Dr. Olson presented them to me. I have thoroughly enjoyed my 8 years on the BCCU #2 school board and my 6 years as president. I am proud of what we have accomplished as a board. I want to thank Dr. Olson and my fellow board members for my gifts. I know Emily had a hand in putting it together too! It has been a honor serving with them. Working with Dr. Olson, his administrators, and the entire BCCU #2 family of teachers and staff has been filled with respect for the excellence they bring to their role in the service to the kids of BCCU #2. I have loved advocating for kids and their education. That passion for education and the children that we provide it to is what made serving for eight years on the board so rewarding and go by so fast! Thanks again BCCU #2 I will miss you.

I am extremely impressed by the quality of the work, the professionalism and the teamwork that the inaugural Bond County CEO class has shown as they took their class project, the Home & Outdoor and More Expo at the Farm Heritage Museum, from a lofty idea to reality. I am so proud of you! It is beyond my wildest dreams 3 years ago when contemplated the idea of trying to bring CEO to Bond County. This passion for the CEO program was also found in my wife late wife, Penni. She named the CEO program in Bond County as one of her two memorials at her funeral because she wanted to fund a scholarship to help a student with their education expenses after high school. She wanted to help kids as she lost her battle with breast cancer, but won her place in heaven. Penni was a devoted Mother and Wife. She was my "Number One" at Schreiber Veterinary Service; the business she and I launched from her labor and delivery room at Greenville Regional Hospital 18 years ago (Will).

Please come out to the Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville Saturday from 9 to 5 and Sunday 11 to 4. You will have an opportunity to hear me speak both days on veterinary topics. You can also see Will and I at the Schreiber Veterinary Service booth. Hope to see you there!

I have spent a lot of time this morning looking out the 16 foot wide sliding glass door in our West facing dining room wall. It was something Penni fell in love with when we went to look at windows at Fisher Lumber as we were putting the finishing touches to our dream homes construction plans. She was SO HAPPY when I said we could make it happen! My good friend Steve Unterbrink redesigned the framing of that wall and it resulted in a view into God's creation that she loved everday even when she couldn't physically make anywhere else without significant pain. My sweet niece, Clare, proclaimed that it looked like a winter wonderland looking out that door today. Seconds later a beautiful red fox appeared in the backyard and scampered about for a long time while we watched. It took me back to the baby red fox that I saved in the clinic early this year. Penni wss so fond of "Foxy Lady". After the fox left I got Penni's birds fed....Merry Christmas from Dr. Schreiber and Schreiber Veterinary Service!

So after an emotionally draining week I was sent a couple of tests by God and probably directed by his new angel, Penni. The first test came on Saturday morning, the day after Penni's funeral service. A young couple called my clinic hoping to find a veterinarian that would agree to see there young brindle and white pitbull that had recently developed hematuria (bloody urine). I thought about how emotionally drained I was, but knew they really needed help. I decided to have them come ahead. The young couple was super nice and very appreciative. During our conversation I found out that they were from Zanesville, Ohio with a Dresden address. To make it even more apparent who was checking up on my commitment to Schreiber Veterinary Service and its mission, the young man's father worked for 14 years at Longaberger! The second test came today when I saw a little girls sick puppy that was severely affected by whipworms. The little girl's mother had died 1 month before and the puppy was all she had left from her Mom. I cared for the puppy even though they were not able to take care of the entire bill . I had agreed to see the puppy before I knew the back story. The puppy and the little girl left feeling better. I ended up feeling better and feeling like Penni was talking to me. Love my job!

As many of you may know already, my girlfriend of 33 years and wife of 27 years lost her battle with breast cancer on Saturday morning. She first and foremost was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was also my office manager and veterinary technician for 18 years. Penni loved animals and sincerely had a passion for the care of them. She and I pulled off many miracles during the past 18 years as we worked side-by-side at Schreiber Veterinary Service. We raised all 3 of our children immersed in the daily activities of the practice. Her rock solid skills and intellect gave me the confidence I needed in those early days of the practice. The love and csre she gave to our clients pets endeared her to them. She will be missed, but the mission of the practice will continue. She worked too hard to help me get it started to let it fail.
Her visitation will be held at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville on Thursday from 4 to 8pm.. Her funeral service will be at 11am at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Douglas on Friday with visitation for 1 hour prior.

I had an eventful evening tonight. Will and I worked on this poor horse that had cut his upper left eyelid very badly.

It was definitely a crazy day in the life of a mixed animal veterinarian today. While out on a farm call delivering a calf from a Holstein dairy cow with a uterine torsion, the thunderstorm blew a calf hutch into the bed of my truck! Not a life-threatening injury to my truck and the bull calf was alive and well. So, all-in-all I will call it a victory!

03/12/2016

It is very important to monitor air quality in livestock facilities this time of year. As the temperatures increase the manure pack in the barns give off more and more ammonia and cool humid nights trap this toxic gas right down where the animals have to breath. The ammonia paralizes the mucociliary apparatus which allows the lungs to clean themselves and prevent pneumonia. Please call us if you have animal that appears to be having difficulty breathing. Early intervention is crucial in preventing permanent lung damage.

01/21/2016

It is very important that pet and livestock owners use good common sense and provide shelter for their animals or allow them to find shelter during this cold weather. They also need to have extra caloric intake during this cold snap if they are housed outside. All outside animals' water source needs to be checked that it is not frozen daily at a minimum. Older inside pets need to be watched closely when they go outside. They can be affected quickly by the cold in some instances.

09/05/2015

It is very important for all pet and livestock owners to be especially vigilant about making sure animals have plenty of shade and water in this heat. Older weaker animals and the newborns do not tolerate the heat well.
