Cara's House-Ascension Parish Animal Shelter Cara's House is the open intake shelter for Ascension parish. As a 501c3 non-profit shelter, we striv We do not accept animals on the weekends.

As a 501c3 non-profit shelter, we strive to provide the best care for the animals in our shelter while they wait for their forever homes. Although Ascension parish government does supply some funding for our operations, we rely heavily on volunteers, donations, and fundraising to generate the funds needed to care for the animals in our facility. Cara's House relies greatly on the public's support

to help provide the best care for our shelter animals. Without your contributions of time and money, we would not be able to care for the approximately 3,000 animals a year that come through our doors. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

ADOPTIONS:

Please come by any time during our normal business hours if you are interested in adopting. Dog Adoption - $115
Cat Adoption - $85

STRAYS:
We only take animals from Ascension parish. If you have found a stray that you need to bring in, please call (225)675-0400 or come by during our normal business hours Monday-Friday. OWNER SURRENDERS:
Surrenders are by APPOINTMENT ONLY. Once online form is completed, shelter staff will contact you to set up appointment. If you have an animal that needs to be surrendered, please click on the link below:

$50 -unaltered animal
$25-altered animal(proof required)

OWNER RECLAIM:
You must have proof of ownership and proof of current rabies vaccination to reclaim an animal. If not reclaimed in 3 days, an adoption fee will be charged. First offense--$50
Second offense-$100

No appointments required for Cats for Jan 31 and Feb 1 but be sure to check the link below for more info including check in time.

🐕 DOGS:
As usual we cannot see any Dobermans, Greyhounds or "smushed face" breeds like Frenchies and Pugs.
2 months-7 years old and
2-75 pounds
(We plan to have options for larger dogs eventually**)

Thank you to Pet Aid, Inc. for their continued support and helping us kick off the first clinic event! As y'all can imagine the start up costs are huge and we couldn't have such an impactful first weekend without the generosity of Pet Aid!

And also Tangi Animal Friends for supplying vouchers to lower the cost for those who qualify! 🫶
(Those receiving any government assistance, disability, social security, foodstamps etc or veteran/military or college students on financial aid- just let us know at check in and $50 of your total will be covered by the voucher). That means $0 for your cat to be sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped if you qualify!!

Ala, Chipley, Mavie, Perez & Saylor enjoyed their evening yard time! All are available for adoption! 🐾

Tavern is currently in a foster home. This is what his foster mom had to say about him….. “Meet Blue. His shelter name is Tavern but we’ve been calling him Blue and he likes it. 😀 He’s a one year old Husky and currently up for adoption through Cara’s House. Blue has been going through obedience training and is potty trained. He is still working on being kennel trained. He would rather chill on a couch instead. 😝 He knows how to sit, lay down, spin. He loves to ride in cars, play tug of war and go out for runs. He would be the perfect companion dog for an active family. If you enjoy hiking, camping or going out for walks, Blue would happily accompany you. He is not a big barker. In fact, it took him a week before I heard his first bark. He gets along with other dogs. He will NOT do well in a home with cats nor any type of farm animals like chickens, ducks, geese, etc. The ideal family for Blue is someone who can give him lots of attention. He loves to be petted and brushed. He’s neutered and is currently on heart worm and flea medicine. If you are interested in meeting Blue, please contact Cara’s House at 225-675-0400.”
