March 8th is both International Akita Day and also International Women's Day

We all share one thing in common = we came into this world via a woman.

Now, we all have varying experiences from that moment on but hopefully we all have at least one woman in our life we can celebrate today. Feel free to brag on someone here.

In my profession we have become a female heavy field in all departments and I have worked with some amazing incredible people over the years. From my first mentor when I was just in high school, Dr. Peterson, to my mentor as I applied to vet school, Dr. Rebecca Miller, to strong women alongside me in college and my career, Dr. Jill Bishop and Dr. Alicia Olivier, and of course, the main woman with me through my entire life, my mother Barbara Danner . I've had some incredible teammates in my career all along the way as well - too many to list here as I know I'd inevitably leave a name out.

Why the hippo? It's my mother's favorite!

March is Adopt a Guinea Pig Month

Often times the addition of a guinea pig to a home is not as thoroughly planned as it should be and so these sweet pets find themselves lost in the system trying to find a new home.

Did you know that our local animal shelters often have guinea pigs needing homes?

Guinea pigs can be very endearing and although they have specific care needs, since they don't require a large space they can fit into most homes.

🐾

People are often unaware that a local shelter has guinea pigs, or that a cavy rescue is located nearby. Click here to learn more about adopting a rescued guinea pig.

This week is Professional Pet Sitters Week.

During my undergraduate years this was a wonderful way for me to not only earn some extra cash, but develop my communication skills both with clients as well as pets, understand the importance of husbandry and the understanding that we don't all tend to our pets the same, and so much more.

Over my years since then I've required the aid of pet sitters myself, both for my dogs as well as my chickens and horses. Knowing you have someone there to help you take care of your precious cargo while you are away is so very comforting.

Let's make sure to give a shout out to those special people in our lives that help us feel better about our time away.

Why is pet dental care important?

After your pet finishes their dinner, small food particles remain lodged between their teeth and attract bacteria, forming a sticky plaque layer on the tooth surface. If not removed promptly, the plaque hardens into tartar, which inflames your pet’s gums. The bacteria then invade under your pet’s gumline and damage the supporting structures of their teeth.

Dental disease is a serious infection that can wreak havoc throughout your furry friend’s body, including in their mouth and even spreading to their vital organs. Potential consequences include:

Painful, bleeding gums — The oral bacteria irritate the gum tissue, leading to painful, swollen gums that may bleed when your pet eats or chews a toy.
Loose or missing teeth — As the infection progresses and damages the tooth’s supporting structures, your pet’s teeth may become loose or fall out.
Tooth root abscesses — If the bacteria invade the tooth root, they can cause an infection. In some cases, the abscess ruptures, causing a draining tract in your pet’s face or jaw. This pathway forms in the skin or tissue to allow pus to drain from the infection to the surface.
Oro-nasal fistula — The bacteria can also tunnel through the tissue between your pet’s mouth and nose, allowing food and saliva to enter your pet’s nasal cavity, which may result in a respiratory infection.
Oral tumors — Chronic inflammation from dental disease increases a pet’s risk for oral tumors.
Organ damage — Periodontal bacteria don’t limit themselves to your pet’s mouth. Left untreated, the infection enters the bloodstream and damages vital organs like the heart, kidneys, and liver.

February is also National Cat Health Month

Cats are known to be Facultatively Social - what does this mean?

"What this essentially means is that, at a species level, cats have the capacity to live in groups with other cats or with people, but also to live independent, solitary lives.

However, whether a cat is able to have amicable relationships with other cats, or with humans, varies between each individual, and essentially, this may not be possible for all cats. " (sharing from feliway.com written by Lauren Finka)

Today is National Boston Terrier Day AND National Whippet Day

Whenever I get the pleasure of seeing a Whippet (which is not often) I always break out into song: "Whippet Good" According to the AKC "The sleek, sweet-faced Whippet, the 'Poor Man's Racehorse,' is lightning quick. He is an amiable, dignified, and gentle soul, but give him something to chase and he's all business. The name Whippet is synonymous with streamlined grace. At somewhere between 18 and 22 inches at the shoulder, the Whippet looks like a Greyhound, but smaller. The Whippet exhibits the classic 'inverted S' lines of the sighthound. The deep chest and trim waist; a lean head supported by a long, arched neck; and slim but sturdy legs combine in a picture of an agile, fleet-footed athlete. Between bursts of intense pursuit, Whippets love to stretch out and relax for long hours, enjoying the role of a loving, and loved, companion. Whippets like a fenced yard to run in, but they do nicely in cozy apartments too'as long as they are exercised properly. Another plus for city dwellers: Whippets rarely bark. Despite the breed's elegant looks, the Whippet is a robust, low-maintenance dog."

As for my Boston friends - we get the joy of seeing many of these and they are so intensely full of great joy for the world! AKC says it well: "Despite the word “terrier” in their name, the Boston Terrier is actually in the Non-Sporting Group and is known for being a world-class companion breed. With their large, round eyes, intelligent expression, and unique “tuxedo” coat, the Boston Terrier makes people fall in love with them at first sight."

If you want to know more about either of these breeds please click the links below. And if you happen to have one of these dogs at home, please share pictures!
