Word of the Week: Cue

The terms “cue” and “command” are frequently used interchangeably in dog training. In psychology, both terms refer to a “discriminative stimulus” which is a signal that serves to communicate to the animal the availability of a particular consequence or reinforcer.

Modern animal trainers consistently prefer using the term “cue” rather than “command” because we are requesting an animal perform a behavior rather than insisting they do it. Insisting the pet do the behavior implies that you will do something aversive to the pet of the pet does not comply. Good animal training is about empowering animals and creating an environment of cooperation rather than intimidation.

I created this back in 2018-2019 after doing the Behavior Works "Living and Learning with Animals" (LLA) online course.
Effectiveness is not enough to justify the use of fear, pain, intimidation, and the inhibition of their agency when training our companion animals. Ethics and welfare matter. (To be contd.)

I (Naomi) will be teaching group classes at Pope Memorial Humane Society NH in Dover, NH.

Sport Sampler grads! They tried out Scent Work, Rally Obedience, Agility, and Weight Pull. Excellent job all around!

Loose Leash Walking/Come When Called grads rocked it in class! They all made great progress.

I don't know if you can see how amazing the doggie personalities in class were from the pictures. You will just have to trust me. It was an absolute joy watching these dogs interact and learn from their humans!
