So you want to be part of the horse community…?
You buy a $1000 nag? You’ll be beat by the $100,000 horse with a top tier pedigree.
You spend $100,000 on a horse with an elite set of papers? You’ll be beat by the neighbors pasture pullout.
The horses competing at the top levels require thousands of dollars per year to keep them sound, while the kids playday horse with one leg in the grave never seems to come up lame.
You compete on your horse barefoot? You obviously don’t love your horse enough to get a set of shoes on him.
You shoe all the way around? How awful are you that you don’t let him compete naturally.
Spend $600 per week at the feed store and $20,000 annually at the vet, and someone out there is going to claim you neglect your horse.
You spent last week’s full paycheck to buy a saddle at the pawn shop? Be ready for the judgmental glances in the warmup pen because you didn’t go buy the newest and best tack money can buy.
Your horse is a week overdue for a trim, and the whispers fly about your horses feet.
It’s arguments about split reins vs closed reins, bit vs bitless, spurs and whips, what saddle is best, the best pad, you should blanket your horse/no, he has a thick coat, English vs Western, which breed of horse you should buy, polos vs boots, apparently segways at equine events and now- terminology on if a horse is an “own or direct son” of a stallion, and the list is neverending…
It’s unfortunately not what it used to be, and it seems now that so many will step on your neck to give them a leg up or make themselves look better. Everyone seems to be an expert and nobody is willing to be a beginner. If you make a mistake while learning, you’re hung out to dry and instead of a kind word of advice, you’re judged.
Too many folks are in this to make a quick buck, and not because they actually love the animal. They’ll lie, cheat, and drug a horse to make a fast sale or win a check.
The best advice to anyone wanting to join the horse world- get some thick skin if you plan to be a part of this industry. Never stop learning or growing. You lose more than you win and not everyone is here to support you.
While this isn’t a sunshine and rainbows post, it’s sadly a factual one. Nevertheless, I am VERY very thankful for my small, tight circle that ALWAYS supports💖
