Our newest addition to the ranch. It’s not a horse…but it has a view of them from every room! Our winter project has been renovating 1 of 2 homes that we acquired this fall that adjoin the ranch.
It has not been decided if it will be used for short term or long term rental to a couple/family that would complement the ranch.
What are your thoughts? 😊

Snow rollers in the USA were probably being phased out about 100 years ago, except in the more rural pockets. Their purpose was to pack down the snow on roads to make it easier for sleighs to travel, and even after the early cars and trucks came into use, many of them were stored for the winter in favor of horse drawn sleighs and pungs, which were basically work sleds.

When the road crews came to a covered bridge they had to hand shovel snow from outside onto the wooden roadway, a process that my father remembered being called “snowing the bridge.”

Obviously cars and sleighs couldn’t easily coexist, so at some point snow rollers went out of business, as did the sleighs. I have never seen a snow roller in full gear, just the roller part abandoned to rot away in a pasture in South Royalton, Vermont decades ago.

Our Story

In today’s society undeveloped land is a rarity. At Shangrila Guest Ranch we strive to hold onto the rural, simplicity of life. We work hard to provide an outlet for those needing an escape from the hustle bustle kind of lifestyle and offer the tranquility and peace that Virginia’s landscape has to give. Currently, we have numerous equestrian trails that venture out through the countryside and dense forest within Southern Virginia. These forestry acreage spans just over thousands of acres, allowing one to explore and immerse oneself in a country off beaten path adventure.

In 2001, Gary and Julie Holmes moved their lives up from Raleigh with a dream of leaving the ruckus of the city life behind and start a new way of living. The Holmes fell in love with the beautiful untouched landscape as well as the equestrian lifestyle. Starting off with just a few horses around the farm, Gary and Julie’s love for horses has grown tremendously and now Shangrila has about an average of 45 horses. Gary and Julie have always treated their guests as family and wanted to create a space for individuals and families could relax and slow down. The Shangrila family welcomes guests with a warm and inviting welcome and the ideal location to immerse oneself within nature and animals. Shangrila’s guests are treated as family from the moment everyone joins the table and enjoys a delicious home cooked meal together. The ranch offers equestrian excursions as well as other fun activities off the horses. If you are a couple looking for a quiet get away and have some time to rejuvenate together, Shangrila has a gorgeous porch view overlooking the horses and the ranch where you can enjoy with a glass of wine. Shangrila Guest Ranch offers an all-inclusive experience, which is a perfect vacation for the whole family! Families find themselves reconnecting with one another as they disconnect from technology and experience the horse ranch adventure together.
