May is party time for the Halifax Dog Squad.🎉 It's been a decade since a bunch of awesome women in Halifax County joined forces to create this fabulous 501c3 rescue group. They saw a serious need - too many dogs were being dumped, and adorable puppies were everywhere, just begging for homes. Fast forward, and almost 4,000 dogs have been saved. We started out using our own rides, then scored some donated older vans, which, let's be honest, need painting and are always breaking down. 🫤
Our amazing supporters hooked us up at 🎄Christmas, sponsoring our spay and neuter bash for this spring for hundreds of cats and dogs.
Thanks a million.💵 Now, we're hoping you'll chip in $10 to celebrate our ten years of crazy, wonderful rescue work. Your donation will keep our vans running, give our fur babies some much-needed flea and tick meds, and help us put up new fencing. Rest assured, every single dollar goes straight to the dogs.
So help us celebrate our tenth birthday🎂 with a buck or ten (or more, we won't say no). They said we were barking mad, but we made it - ten years and almost 4,000 dogs rescued. We're ridiculously proud of our members, volunteers and supporters. Thanks again!

Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week, held April 13-19, 2025, is a time to recognize the dedication and hard work of animal care and control officers. To observe the week, consider donating to local animal shelters or rescue organizations, like Halifax Dog Squad, and expressing gratitude to our animal control staff, and promoting responsible pet ownership.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of ways to celebrate:
1. Show Appreciation to Animal Control Officers:
Express gratitude: Thank animal control officers in person, through a letter, or via social media.
Be a responsible pet owner: Ensure your pets are licensed, tagged, vaccinated, and microchipped.
Attend local events: If your city is recognizing animal control officers, attend to show your support.
2. Support Animal Shelters and Rescue Organizations:
Donate: Contribute financially or donate essential supplies like food, toys, blankets, and cleaning supplies.
Volunteer: Offer your time at local shelters or rescues.
Raise awareness: Share information about animal welfare and encourage others to help.
3. Promote Responsible Pet Ownership:
Educate yourself and others:
Learn about responsible pet ownership practices, such as vaccination and microchipping.
Report cruelty:
If you witness animal cruelty, neglect, or abuse, report it to the appropriate authorities.
Engage in community outreach:
Participate in events that promote responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

Thank you, Halifax County!

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who registered for the upcoming PETA Spay & Neuter Van event. The response has been overwhelming — we have 153 cats 🐱 (mostly females) and 87 dogs 🐶 signed up! That means nearly 240 animals will receive care, and with those numbers, we could potentially prevent hundreds of unwanted litters in just one year — totaling well over 1,000 animals 🐾.

Registration is now closed, and no additional animals will be signed up at this time.

Everyone who successfully registered should have received an initial confirmation email 📧 with important information about the event and what to expect next. If you registered but did not receive this INITIAL email, please send us a Facebook message so we can assist you.

Thank you for making the responsible decision to spay and neuter — and for doing your part to reduce the number of homeless pets in our community ❤️.

We also want to thank our wonderful partners at Halifax Dog Squad, Inc. for the teamwork to be able to host this event. Also, a thank you to all of the generous sponsors who made this event possible by covering hotel stays, gas, and meals for the PETA team:
Hitachi Energy South Boston
Team Buckley – Pointe Realty Group
The Gazette-Virginian
Betsy's Boarding Kennel & Grooming
And an anonymous local business sponsor!

Together, we are making a difference — one pet at a time!

Working together we accomplish so much more!

In animal control, there are no days off — because when animals need us, we come running.

Today, we got the kind of call that stops your heart. A momma dog had passed away, leaving behind seven tiny, 4-day-old puppies—cold, hungry, and clinging to life.

There was no time to waste.

Massive gratitude to Halifax County Virginia Paws and Claws SPCA. USAs and Sanctuary Rescue for dropping everything on a Sunday to help us save these babies. Because of them, these pups now have a fighting chance.

This is what teamwork, compassion, and commitment look like. We always say how it takes a village to save lives and today was the perfect example of that!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and we hope to see you tomorrow!
