We have several weeks of 90+ temperatures coming up so please, everyone, if you see something, say something! You could save a life!
In Virginia, it is illegal to tether a dog outdoors when the temperature is 85 degrees Fahrenheit or higher or 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Additionally, outdoor tethering is not considered adequate shelter during heat advisories, severe weather warnings (including hurricanes, tornadoes, and severe thunderstorms), or when the actual or effective outdoor temperature is 85 degrees Fahrenheit or higher or 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Violations of this law are considered a Class 4 misdemeanor.

Yes, if it's too hot for you outside, it's generally too hot for your dog as well, and in some cases, it's against the law to leave a dog outside in extreme heat. Virginia law prohibits leaving dogs outside for extended periods when temperatures are high, often above 85°F. Dogs are more vulnerable to heatstroke than humans and can't regulate their body temperature as effectively. This includes: Leaving dogs chained or tethered outside. It also includes leaving pets outside during severe weather warnings!
And for goodness sake, do not leave your dog in the car when temps are 70° and above.
