I cut an opening (6" x 24") into the hardware cloth separating the chicks from the big girls. Here is the first interaction!

Happy New Year!

The hatch has begun! The eggs started to pip last night, but none made an appearance until well after midnight. This morning, there were 4 hatched chicks and 3 ...

Time for some oatmeal with craisins!

Winter treats for chickens should be high protein, high energy and keep them busy and from getting bored.

Yesterday, one of my hens endured a hawk attack. Thanks to Mal and Joanne, she was saved, was taken to a vet where I paid a ransom for them to sew her up and let me take her home... I am getting good at getting meds into various animals. Winnie Churchill will be isolated from the flock for at least 2 months. That works well for me, because we won't be able to eat her eggs for at least that long. Ah well, I have to be up with the chickens, so this is goodnight!

Sometimes being thankful is accepting that you have 3 hatched chicks and not focusing on the one that started to hatch and then stopped, and the one that failed sometime yesterday without so much as a peep...

First snowflake last night. Gusts of wind shaking the cameras inside and outside!

Raising chickens is sometimes rough. This week I checked on the hatching eggs 3 days before the hatch date. There were 15 eggs with chicks moving around. I put the incubator in lockdown (no opening so that the humidity stays the same) and waited patiently for day 21. Nothing. Day 22, Nothing.

I am not sure what happened, perhaps the incubator overheated? I can't imagine what else would have caused all 15 chicks to die.

I haven't had a chance to put the electric netting up for the chickens, but while I was trying to corral the escape artist so that the dog wouldn't get her, Onyx got out. So I put the pup inside and let the chickens out to free range... Then, THUNDER and RAIN... they all came running except 2 who wandered back and forth on the wrong side of the run fence... I got as wet as they did!

6 new Easter Egger chicks!

To molt, or not to molt, that is the question...

Sadly, last week, Jessica's chick got out of the small coop in spite of the hardware cloth across the bottom of the doorway. Jessica stayed with her, but it was too cold outside for the little one.

We are welcoming Jessica's first chick - a girl! Three more to go - I added an Easter Egger egg to the nest because it was about to hatch, and it needed a foster mom.

Jessica's first chick is here! 2 more to go.

We've got chicks!

Buffy is a Mom once more! Chirping from the nest box, but no idea how many chicks!

Winnie Churchill has become an escape artist. She flies up to the top of the gate and then down. She always returns and flies back inside. Hopefully she is not giving flying lessons!

Our three Easter Eggers have all been named. Thanks, Max Beckerman for starting us off with Maragaret Hatcher! The other two are Toni Blair, and Winnie Churchill!

I may just go into chicken medicine. One of my favorite hens pr*****ed and today I found out she was "egg bound" so I played midwife all day, sitting her in warm baths several times each day, and then drying her off!
Oh! Lets not forget the internal examination and massaging the egg with olive oil...
Have you ever blow dried a chicken??? Keep her head covered with a towel and she is calm. Yesterday she shook herself like a dog even though she was wrapped in a towel.
Good news! She laid the egg, the prolapse has disappeared, and we both have survived!

Perhaps we should air condition the coop...

The 4 Black Copper Marans chicks have moved to their temporary dorm! They are 6 weeks old and are used to spending their days outdoors and their nights in the family room, watching basketball/tennis/soccer! Should be interesting to see how they react to the big birds and vice versa!

All these chicks were hatched from our hens and Kaiser.

Yesterday, I finally saw Kaiser doing his courtship dance for Schnitzel! It actually is a pattern that is repeated over and over. She wasn't interested, so he moved on!

We are all looking forward after the chick massacre. We know that it was raccoons - we saw one walk pass the coop window on the camera. It seems to come around between 10 and 11. We've heard it 3 days in a row, but it cannot get at the rest of the flock.

On the bright side, the 4 French Black Copper Marans chicks are now 4 weeks old. luckily, they were inside the house. And then there are the eggs in the incubator. I am really excited about t hose because those chicks will be bred from our stock!

06/25/2016

A great day ended terribly. The 6 chicks from Riker and the 2 Legbar chicks were attacked and killed by a predator. Probably a raccoon. I am full of "if onlys" and "I should haves" bottom line is that they are gone.

17 week old Kaiser on the right and 1 year old Jessica on the left! Same breed - Bielefelder. XL eggs from XL birds that are very friendly

Of the 3 dozen eggs I set on the 14th, I have 20 that are developing. Several showed the red ring which means they died very early, several showed development started and stopped, also very early. The rest were not fertile, which can be chalked up to a young rooster :)

06/24/2016

So busy doing chicken chores!

06/14/2016

Today I put 3 dozen eggs into the incubator from our hens and the Bielefelder rooster! 21 days til hatch, but in about 5 days I will know how many of them are fertile.
