I get asked a lot, “Why does my cat need rabies if she doesn’t go outside?” Or if you’re used to me by now, you might say, “yes I know, the bats.” Remember that rabies is still out there, and while rare, it’s deadly yet preventable. Bats are a leading cause of exposure in the United States, as they often come in uninvited.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/01/06/cdc-warns-increase-rabies-deaths-bat-contact/9115089002/

Deaths in Idaho, Illinois, Texas and Minnesota happened after each person came in direct contact with rabid bats last year, according to a CDC report.

This morning our carbon monoxide detector went off at the clinic. We had just replaced it last week because our old one stopped working. We called the fire department and confirmed that the furnace had a leak. Carbon monoxide levels were higher than normal but not yet toxic. While we do not currently have any heat at the moment, we are all safe. This could’ve been very dangerous if we had not caught it early. Just a reminder to make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors in your home!

Gus and Milo are brothers that were rescued under a gazebo and are in need a forever home. Just six months old, they have come a long way from being frightened kittens when they were first found. Hoping they can be adopted together because they’ve been through so much. They love to play and sit on laps, especially when you have treats! Not too sure about being picked up yet, but they’re coming along. Indoor-only, no declawing. Would be ok with a dog.

Neutered, vaccinated, tested, wormed and flea treated. Have paperwork to give the new family.

Email Lora at [email protected] if you're interested.

VCA Great Lakes will no longer be taking in non-priority emergency cases such as limping, red eyes, minor wounds, and skin problems. If you are unsure whether this qualifies for your pet, they will discuss this further. If you choose to go to the emergency clinic with these conditions, keep in mind you will be waiting a long time.

You may have noticed that we are booking several weeks out for non-emergency appointments such as vaccines. Like hospitals throughout the country, we are experiencing higher than normal demand and we are doing our best to accommodate as many cats as we can without sacrificing quality of care. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

COVID-19 UPDATE ON CURBSIDE SERVICE

Even as we navigate these times of uncertainty and change, our priority – you and your pet – remains the same. Rest assured we are doing everything in our power to make certain your experience with us is rewarding and safe.

The good news is that there is no evidence that cats can be infected with the COVID-19 virus. (Cats have their own coronaviruses that are unrelated and cannot be transferred to people.) Just Cats Hospital already has infectious disease protocols in place and we are taking extra steps to ensure the health and well-being of both clients and employees during the COVID-19 outbreak.

For the safety of our staff and clients, we are now operating as curbside-service only, except in cases of severe illness or end-of-life situations. This means clients will no longer be allowed in the building. Please call us when you arrive and a staff member will be out shortly to come get your pet or to bring your prescription medications and food. The staff is not allowed to enter any car. We will call you to discuss any treatment recommendations and diagnostic findings. Clients can pay over the phone or by check.

If you do not have a cell phone for calling upon arrival at the clinic, please let us know.

All cats must be in a carrier. Carriers will be disinfected before being returned to the car.

Clients that are concerned about picking up medications that live within a 5mile radius of the clinic may pay over the phone and Dr. Pizzuli will take medications to the clients. We will call prior to delivery and deliveries will be placed on the porch for pick up. This will be offered free of charge during the outbreak.

Any employee who has known exposure to COVID-19 or who is showing signs will be directed to seek medical advice and will not return to work until cleared by a medical doctor.

We remain dedicated to serving you, and we hope to see you soon. If you have any concerns, give us a call or email and we’ll happily help you.

Christopher Stripes needs a home! He is 1 year old, male neutered. He has special dietary needs based on urinary problems he had as a kitten. He currently lives with 6 other cats and a dog with no issues. He’s very curious, lively, affectionate, and reminds us of the honey badger. If interested, please let us know. He is vaccinated and microchipped.
