You are dedicated per owner who has worked hard and invested many hours in training. Your dog is really great at following commands such as sit, down, stay, and come when called - until you leave the classroom.
In this class (held outdoors from May through October), we bridge the gap between training and real life.
We meet at various dog-friendly public places in the community and practice skills such as loose-leash walking, come when called, leave it, and more. Your dog will learn how to behave when there are tempting distractions and in new surroundings, and you'll learn how to ask for focus and attention, even when there are lots of other doggy distractions.

What prerequisites does my dog need?
All dogs must be current on vaccinations before the first class. Please bring your current documentation of your dog's vaccination records to the first class.

Where does class meet?
Community Locations in/around South Kingstown, RI
- Class meets for six consecutive one hour sessions.

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

We Can’t All Be Social Butterflies
We all want our dogs to play nice with other dogs—and shouldn’t it come naturally? Dogs are social, after all. So why does an otherwise sweet-natured canine buddy turn into a killjoy at the park? Well, dogs can be introverts, too. Like humans, they can have bad days and they occasionally form instant dislikes to new dogs. But where we get to choose our friends and are free to avoid anyone we can’t stand, dogs pretty much have to go wherever we take them. What’s more, they are territorial creatures, protective of their favorite things, their home turf, and us. Adding another dog to the equation, familiar or not, always holds the potential for fireworks.

Why are some dogs more social than others? Genetics play a role, and so does early socialization. Here, too, the human analogy is apt. Some of us come out of the womb gregarious, others are born shy and unsure of how to negotiate the dynamics of social groups. We also are greatly affected by our earliest experiences. An otherwise confident and social child finding herself the target of bullies on the playground could be forever changed as a result. Similarly, dogs are the sum of their parts: DNA and experiences thrown into a pot.

Handling Your Dog’s Hearing Loss
Most senior dogs suffer some hearing loss and many eventually go deaf. When you become aware of your dog’s impaired hearing, it’s important to start making accommodations. If your dog’s sight is still decent, you can switch to communicating with hand signals. Be sure to “shout,” i.e., use larger gestures than you would with a young dog.

Buying a storm whistle—reported to be twice as loud as other mouth-blown whistles—can help with recall on walks. Alternatively, you may have to stick to on-leash walks or off-leash romps in enclosed areas where you can supervise. Your dog will be less aware of what goes on around her; she may not hear traffic, joggers, kids, or cyclists approaching, or, if she isn’t downwind, other dogs. In other words, out in the world, you will need to be your dog’s ears.

Surviving Your Dog’s Teens
Two-legged kids are not the only ones to go through an awkward phase. Here are five tips for keeping your sanity intact and raising a polite, easygoing adult dog:
Consistency in routines, training, and expectations is key.
Dinner, treats, walks, belly rubs, play sessions, a spot on the couch—all are opportunities for manners practice. Use things your dog enjoys to reward him throughout the day for a quick practice of sit or other cues he knows.
Now is a great time to take training classes or engage with a private trainer to get tips and regular training time in.
The more doggie workouts you can fit in, the better behaved your dog is likely to be. Exercise is the antidote to adolescent hyperactivity. (Just consult with your vet before undertaking strenuous sports. Don’t go running with your dog until he is at least 18 months old, for example, it may damage bone development.) Read More…

How To Puppy Proof Your Home
Before welcoming home that puppy you’ve been dreaming of, there are a few keys ways that your can prepare your home to be puppy-friendly:
Hide electrical cords. Hunt for and hide small objects your puppy can chew or choke on. Put safety latches on any cabinet with cleaning supplies or poison. Keep plastic bags out of your puppy’s reach, and secure your garbage can.
Make sure your yard is escape-proof. Put a fence around your pool—or keep your puppy away from it.
It’s never too early to start training! Book an intake appointment with us for private training to get started on the right foot today.
