AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Bronx von Brome

Bronx von Brome is a very handsome 7-year-old classic German Shepherd. Bronx is a grumpy old guy, but he has a charming side as well. If you're one of his chosen humans, his face will light up when he sees you. On the other hand, if you're not, you might hear a low growl. At the rescue, it is like a status symbol if Bronx likes you. In a perfect world, we would love someone who lived alone and wanted a devoted companion. Someone who could visit him at the rescue first to get to know him. He would prefer to be the only pet in the home as well. We recently discovered that Bronx is allergic to chicken. His skin in now finally healing and his full coat is coming in. We know Bronx is a harder-to-place dog, but we are hoping there is that special person out there waiting for him, so he doesn't have to live his life out at the rescue.
Bronx was an owner surrender to us in a neglected condition.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Klondike von Kemnath

Klondike von Kemnath is a very handsome 3-year-old white German Shepherd with possibly a touch of Lab mixed in. Very sweet and loving, he has an easygoing personality and loves to lean against his person to earn lots of petting. On walks, he again stays close to you as he shows his nice leash manners and meets other dogs like a gentleman. Klondike comes in at a medium-energy level and may already be housetrained. When it’s time for his playgroups, he’s a calm boy who likes to mingle but prefers to have his fun with other easygoing pups. Cats, however, need not apply to be his buddy. Klondike was found lost near the rescue in Los Angeles.

Here is what one of the volunteers had to say about him after one of the monthly hikes: "My fun hiking buddy was the goofy polar bear Klondike. This boy jumped into the car right away and loved sniffing everywhere on the hike. He was good on a leash, great with people/kids (he kept going to strangers to get pets!) and loved treats, so he will be easy to train. He shared water and treats with other dogs. And he is athletic! My girls tossed him treats for fun, and he could jump so high to catch them. I can see him catching frisbees with ease. Come by the rescue to see this loveable bear for yourself!"

With an approved application, you can meet Klondike at the rescue on adoption days. If you would like to add him to your family, start the process by filling out an application: http://www.sheprescue.org/Application_to_Adopt_a_Dog.html

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Paloma von Prezelle

Paloma von Prezelle is a stunning 3-year-old German Shepherd. This girl is the picture of beauty and smarts! In an almost human-like fashion, Paloma will offer you her paw when she wants attention—so charming. Likely housebroken, her hobbies include learning new tricks (she knows sit, paw and down), getting head scratches and exploring. Nothing is more exciting to this girl than the idea of going on a walk or adventure. She walks well with other dogs and meets them okay. This medium-energy girl does best in playgroups with easygoing dogs; she avoids pushy or overly energetic pups and hangs out with her calmer friends. She enjoys checking in with people too (for those head scratches she likes so much). She wants to soak up all the attention you have and would love a home with people who appreciate the fine art of pets and walks (and no small dogs or cats). Take her paw and never let her go—Paloma is the heart dog you’ve been waiting for. Paloma was rescued from the Palmdale animal shelter.

Meet the January 2nd Dog of the Day in the 2024 Westside calendar - Jack.

If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever.

Jack passed suddenly a couple of months ago, just shy of his 11th birthday. He was such a happy-go-lucky little guy. Although small in stature, he had the big heart and soul of a German Shepherd. Raised by Westside's Shepherds, he never realized he wasn't one of them. He was a stowaway as a puppy, on the WSGR rescue van, and spent his first year at the rescue, where he waited for me to find him. I believe we were meant for each other. He helped me deal with the challenges of my elderly mother, who lived with us. He adored her; he knew he could always get some of her lunch if he just gave her his puppy dog eyes. My mother loved him too. He made her smile all the time. He was a challenge when he first came to live with us, as many rescues are, as they try to adapt to a new life. Jack quickly learned that cats are not to be messed with and he ended up with a neighbor's cat being his best friend! He was smart, too. He was the only dog in his large obedience-class to pass it on the first try! Of course, being food-motivated really helped! 🙂

I miss this boy every day. He was my heart and soul. If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever.

Sure, life is full of storms,
But the sweetness of my soul
Will always guide you home…
Love,
Toby

Toby von Bravo is a very handsome 7-8 -year-old Lab-mix (our best guess). This ginger boy with a sweet face has a heart full of love and has captured all our hearts at the rescue. After spending time in a foster home, Toby has come out of his shell to show that he is charming, smart, and super-sweet. He loves being with people - he'll come over for cuddles, follow you around, and has done well with children. He is also house-trained, has mastered a few basic commands, and is eager to please. Toby has learned the joy of toys and looks forward to playtime. At about 50 lbs., he's a very manageable size, and despite being an older pup has a very good energy level. So if you are looking for an endearing and devoted companion, fill out the application for Toby on our website!

Meet the January 1st Dog of the Day in the 2024 Westside calendar - Jack.

In the ebb and flow of life, Jack found his way into our hearts, bringing healing after the loss of another beloved German Shepherd. Skeptical of adopting again, the fear of reliving the heartache lingered. Yet, God had a different plan.
Jack's video stood out as I scrolled through countless German Shepherd profiles on my Facebook feed, portraying him as a true "love bug." Captivated, I saved the video, secretly indulging in its warmth until my son discovered my silent infatuation. To my delight, he, too, fell under Jack's enchanting beauty.
September 2022 marked the turning point. Learning that another family had taken Jack, we swiftly applied for another canine companion. During the interview with Westside, my heart spoke its truth—I wanted Jack. Miraculously, he was still available. Despite the chaos of moving, we made time to meet him, and it was an instant connection. We sensed Jack was meant to be ours.
Yet, our joy turned to concern as Jack, overwhelmed and anxious, fell ill with the kennel flu. The first night turned into tireless care, and our worries escalated. The decision to return him for his well-being weighed heavy, and the days without him felt like an eternity. In our desperation, we called daily, praying for his recovery and return.
Eight long days passed before the call came from Westside—the call that echoed relief and joy. Jack was ready to go home.
Now, working from home, my days are woven with moments shared with Jack. He sleeps on my bed, a constant reminder of love, and our extraordinary bond.
Jack, my baby, you are a celestial gift, and our hearts are forever entwined. We cherish you. You are our heavenly blessing. 🌟🐾❤️

Happy New Year!!!

As you hang your 2025 Dog of the Day Westside calendar and turn the calendar to January, you get to meet Rayne.

We adopted Rayne, aka Abby von Asdorf, in November 2023. After about a month, she began to stare at and chase shadows obsessively, trying to get them at all costs. When this happened, she totally closed out the rest of the world. Both our vet and trainer believed that someone in her past thought it would be fun to chase a light or laser pointer and, due to her high prey drive, it became an obsession. We’ve been able to work through this fixation and now have the sweetest girl ever. Rayne has traveled coast-to-coast this year and loves her hikes, climbing on or over things, boating to find porpoises and running on the beach, trying to sneak up on seagulls! Cuddles on the bed or getting her way with dad by the cutest head tilts ever - you bet. Rayne is our third Westside girl; each had her own personality and quirks. Not all dogs start out perfect but, with a little extra love, patience and time, you will get a magnificent companion.

Happy New Year!!!

As you hang your 2025 Blank Day Westside calendar and turn the calendar to January, you get to meet Stormy.

Happy New Year from Stormy, your January calendar girl. I ended up at Westside German Shepherd Rescue after Robin okayed a transfer from the Riverside Shelter, where my euthanasia clock was ticking. I adopted Rob Connor on (note the date) Friday the 13th, 2018. Robin and I thought I would be preferable to psychotherapy for Rob, as he seemed prone to two-sided conversations with himself. He is now fixed (pardon the expression) and converses with me. I split my time between Mammoth Lakes and the redwood forests of Felton, CA, where I chase bears, deer, coyotes, gophers, chipmunks and turkeys. Please send bacon, as we have a shortage up here.

As 2024 comes to an end tonight, let's meet the cover dog of the 2025 Dog of the Day Westside calendar - Greta.

Greta joined our family, including 2 German Shepherd siblings, 6 years ago. She absolutely loves to swim in the lake. She likes to bark at the deer, turkeys, geese and any other intruder who gets too close to her self-decided perimeter. When the snow arrives, she is in heaven. Greta romps through it and buries her face in the snow looking for her bumper toy. Greta has added such great joy and happiness to our family.
