Every year or so we like to post articles in relation to vaccines we require, or even some that you may have heard of that are optional. We all want our dogs to be healthy, but what are we vaccinating them against, and how does it affect them?

Our next article is about a very important core vaccine. We will turn clients away if they are missing this vaccine. This article explains what it is, how your dog may contract it, how it affects a pet and why we require it.

"There is no cure for canine distemper. Veterinarians diagnose distemper through a combination of clinical signs and diagnostic tests, or through a postmortem necropsy. Once diagnosed, care is purely supportive. Veterinarians treat the diarrhea, vomiting, and neurological symptoms, prevent dehydration, and try to prevent secondary infections. Most vets recommend that dogs be hospitalized and separated from other dogs to prevent the spread of infection.... Every year or so we like to post articles in relation to vaccines we require, or even some that you may have heard of that are optional. We all want our dogs to be healthy, but what are we vaccinating them against, and how does it affect them?

Our first article is about a noncore vaccine, that we do require, and you've probably heard about if you have a dog. You might know the "Bordetella vaccine" as the "kennel cough" vaccination, which can be a little misleading. This article explains what it is, how your dog may contract it, how it affects a pet and why we require it.

"Kennel cough, scientifically known as canine infectious tracheobronchitis, is easily spread from dog to dog through aerosol droplets, direct contact, or contact with contaminated surfaces like food and water bowls, toys, or kennel runs — a bit like how the common cold is spread in grade schools. Your dog is most likely to pick it up in an area where lots of dogs congregate, but he can also pick it up from any contaminated environment, and you can bring it home to him if you spend a lot of time around dogs at work or during volunteer opportunities."

Attention all AHK clients:

We are no longer accepting clients who have not fully vaccinated their canines from the CIV. This includes grooming, daycare and boarding clients.
We've posted this multiple times in the past 2 months to prepare clients for this policy change, but here it is again to catch you up with the what and the why.

****************(originally posted 8/24/18***************
We've received many questions regarding the canine influenza vaccine, and as dog owners ourselves, we too have been watching the situation closely.
It's become obvious that the vaccine is necessary for the safety of our pets, both dogs and cats, as felines are known to host the virus as well.
The CIV (canine influenza virus) vaccine comes in two parts. It protects against both H3N8 & H3N2 strains, and requires a booster shot after about three weeks. Because of the time it requires to properly vaccinate a dog, we are not implementing our vaccine requirement until NOVEMBER 1ST 2018. We are contacting all current reservations going forward to encourage them to begin vaccinating their pets now, to be ready for this policy change.
In the mean time, we'll continue our strict cleaning regime, using deep kennel-specific cleaners capable of knocking out everything from kennel cough to parvo.
We also understand that this vaccine isn't cheap, despite being broken up into two doses. After our own research, we recommend that clients 'shop around' before vaccinating their dogs. We've learned that many veterinarians are charging about $80 for the first injection, and $40 for the second. Places like Tractor Supply Company (and presumably other local businesses that have “vaccination days” available. See Pet Supplies Plus and the like) are offering vaccines for closer to $40 per injection.
We want what is best for our pets and their owners.

TL;DR Animal House Kennel will not accept any canine clients without the CIV vaccine as of November 1st, 2018

Q: Why does my dog eat grass? A: Ah... This is the $64,000 question. Grass eating among our canine friends has a number of theories as to origin. I get this question many times a year, and as yet cannot come up with a meaningful single reason. I can say that I've seen grass chewers on occasion get a...
