When something happens to stem the flow of a cat's urine, trouble ensues - and fast.

Urine has lots of good things in it. In many cases, they are substances that cats or people can’t live without, such as potassium, sodium, and water. The kidneys sense and adjust the composition of bodily fluids and drop the excess into the urine. If a person eats a large order of fries, covered with salt, the kidneys dump the unwanted excess of sodium into the urine. The same is true with many other substances, like water, that need to be regulated. Urine is (usually) sterile, so unless there is a urinary tract infection, urine is pure. It’s not the terrible stuff that many third graders make it out to be. True, it does have the waste products of metabolism in it, which a body needs to remove.

And that’s where some of the problems begin. If the flow of urine stops, those waste products build up and negatively impact the way the body works. One of the most common ways that happens is when a cat’s urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the litter box) gets blocked.

Cats that are blocked often show the following signs:

-Straining repeatedly in the litter box (often mistaken for constipation)
-Crying or howling
-Licking at the genitals/below the base of the tail
-Hiding
If you notice your cat showing any of the above signs, get right in to see your veterinarian or go to your nearest ER as soon as possible. Don’t delay as a few hours can make a big difference.

As we begin the week we are excited to share a study about a very special boy named Roscoe 🐶, who belongs to our team member, Riley. At Southtown Veterinary Hospital we're dedicated to providing cutting-edge veterinary care for your pets. One way we do this is through our regenerative medicine services, which use the body's own cells to help tissues regenerate. Roscoe suffered from a partial tear of his ACL, which is a ligament in the knee. Before going right to surgery we opted to try some other therapies Roscoe received Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy and Healing Laser Therapy along with oral joint supplements & pain management and rest. 🩸PRP utilizes an animal's own platelets to aid in tissue repair; platelets contain growth factors crucial for healing. ⚡️Laser therapy uses focused light to trigger a process called photobiomodulation. The process changes the condition of damaged tissue and increases recovery through cellular metabolism. Both of these therapies can help with conditions such as arthritis, acute and chronic soft tissue injuries, ligament trauma, tendon damage and certain spinal conditions. Southtown Veterinary Hospital was founded in 2005 by Dr. Robert Sullivan after working for 9 years at Montrose Veterinary Clinic. He had a vision to open a full service companion and exotic animal hospital and rehabilitation facility where we could offer “big city” medicine with small town compassion.

He along with his wife Rebecca and their dedicated team commit to provide quality veterinary care throughout the life of your pet. Our services and facilities are designed to assist in routine preventive care for young, healthy pets; early detection and treatment of disease as your pet ages; and complete medical and surgical care as necessary during his or her lifetime.

We understand the special role your pet plays in your family and are dedicated to becoming your partner in your pet's health care. We treat your pet as we would our own. Our goal is to practice the highest quality medicine and surgery with compassion and an emphasis on client education. Our entire healthcare team pledge to provide personal attention to the unique concerns of each individual pet owner and their pets.
