We have been learning a lot about Pookie since she arrived to us a week ago. She is the definition of "ball is life". Pookie is gaining weight slowly and her true personality is coming out each day 🩷

Pookie is 18 months old and is the sweetest cuddliest girl. She is very much a velco dog and wants to be with you at all times. She LOVES car rides but always has to be touching you- again... VELCRO DOG. 🫛 She is currently up to date on vaccines but is not spayed.

We are looking to place Pookie into a home that is quiet so she can decompress. While she gets along with other dogs we feel as if she needs to be with a very quiet dog or no dog at all for the time being. 🐶 High energy dogs scare her and make her uncomfortable. 👧Pookie is GREAT with kids 👦- and does not seem to be phased by the cats we have currently at the shelter. 🐈

We are requiring a shepherd experienced ONLY home for Pookie. Please call South Windsor Police Department Animal control at 860-648-6239 if you meet these requirements.

ATTENTION: We are still in a Severe Cold Weather Protocol. This means its TOO COLD FOR YOUR PETS OUTSIDE!

Owners of Arctic breeds - we get it. This isn't aimed at you. Your dogs are lunatics, but still, please play it safe.
Short-coated and smaller breeds CAN NOT handle this level of cold. Outreach groups all over are finding dogs deceased in their doghouses/kennels, stuffed with straw or not. BRING YOUR DOG INSIDE. If you need temporary assistance with a crate or bedding to do so, please reach out to us we are all willing to help.

Meet Pookie!
This perfect angel was transferred to us from New Britain late last week. She had a potential home lined up but that fell through. Pookie was found roaming in New Britain and was not claimed. She has been seen by a vet and is estimated to be only 18 months old! She is now up to date on vaccines, and is not spayed. She has been phenomenal with dogs but is scared when cornered. She has not been tested with cats. She absolutely adores children.

As a typical shepherd we have very specific requirements for her adoption- she will only be adopted to a shepherd experienced home that is willing to work with a trainer. While Pookie knows the basics, she is still very young and needs a strong foundation to set her up for success. While she has been good with other dogs, she is scared when cornered, because of this we are requiring her family to work with a professional to boost her confidence.

If you are interested in adopting Pookie please contact South Windsor Police Department Animal Control at 860-648-6239.

Governor Lamont has activated Connecticut’s Severe Cold Weather Protocol beginning Sunday night 1/19/2025

As you know, we are bracing for an extreme weather event, with brutal cold. Please bring your dogs inside. Connecticut law prohibits tethering dogs outside during extreme weather. Dogs of all breeds are susceptible to frostbite, especially on the nose and footpads. If you see a dog being tethered outside, please have your local ACO or police take immediate action: Tell them that per Connecticut General Statutes 22-350a, dogs cannot be tethered outside during extreme weather for a duration longer than 15 minutes.

It's also too cold for cats and for rabbits in outdoor hutches. (In nature, rabbits are prolific burrowers--they burrow beneath the frostline to avoid extreme temperatures. In hutches, they have no such protection, and can die from extreme weather.) So, bring them in, too!

Remember: If it's too cold for you, it's too cold for your pets!

** ADOPTED **

We have some exciting news! Charlie is officially up for adoption!

Charlie is estimated around 2 years old and is still intact. He will be adopted out with an APCP voucher. Charlie enjoys exploring and will always settle down for a cuddle session. He appears to get along with other dogs, but has not been cat tested.

If you are interested in Charlie please contact South Windsor Police Department Animal Control at 860-648-6239.

🐾 The 3-3-3 Rule for Adopting: A Guide for New Pet Parents! 🐾

Did you know the 3-3-3 rule applies to cats as well as dogs? 🐶🐱
When you bring home a new pet, it can take time for them to adjust to their new environment. The 3-3-3 rule suggests:

✔️ 3 days: To decompress and start to feel safe in their new space.
✔️ 3 weeks: To begin settling into a routine and becoming more comfortable.
✔️ 3 months: To feel fully at home and show their true personality!

But remember, every pet is unique! 🐾 While some dogs and cats may take around 3 days, 3 weeks, or 3 months, others may need longer. If your new pet takes 6 or even 12 months to fully adjust, that’s completely NORMAL!

The key is patience and consistency. 💖 Take it slow, create a loving environment, and celebrate the small victories along the way. Your furry friend is on their own journey, and your love and support will help them thrive! 🏡✨

There is a severe weather alert that has been issued in CT for the next few days. Call your local animal control or police department if you see an animal left outside!

We wanted to give you all an update on the Shih Tzu that was left in the Bark Park early this morning. First and foremost we want to thank Ruff and Tumble dog salon and Aries for all her hard work getting this little man who we have named Charlie de-matted and cleaned up. This process took almost 5 hours!

We have not received any leads as of this evening, but we are actively investigating this case.

If anyone recognizes this dog, please contact South Windsor Police Department CSO Kelley or CSO Curtis at 860-644-2551.

Check out these before and after photos of Charlie!

If you don’t have the time, finances, patience, or commitment - don’t do it! If you aren’t sure the person you are going to give a pet to is certain about having a pet - don’t do it! So many animals are returned to the shelter after the holidays - and spaces in shelters are already at capacity. Make sure you’re committed and ready if you want to add a pet to your family - no matter what time of the year it is. 🐾🎄🐾🎄
