Mikey’s Blog: Surgery and How to Make it Work for YOU

Hello Friends. I’ve been waiting for my mom to tell you all that I’ve had surgery. But all I saw was a hideous video of me testing treats with my donut on without knowing the video would go on social media….🤦🏻‍♀️ Then I was sure she’d make some sort of post about me… but no. And it’s not for me—it’s because I know all of YOU would be concerned about me… maybe you’d like to drop me off some goodies while I get well, or even tell my parents to take me home some treats from my favorite table in the shop…but how could you know to do that if you didn’t know…? I know it’s not exactly great manners to announce myself as convalescing, but circumstances clearly dictate that I take these matters into my own paws….

So since you didn’t know to send me “Get Well Soon” goodies—I got my own. And here’s a guide to doing it for all of your fur kids should they find themselves in the same position as me. I encourage them to bookmark this for the future….

1. Tumor removal isn’t really scary. I had a large mass removed so that I could walk better. My doctor said it looked like a breast implant came out… Not really what a clearly Alpha Male wants to hear, but I was pleased to hear it was bigger than expected so that my parents could feel thankful (and generous with goodies).

2. Medication must be given with food. Refuse dog treats of all kinds even if this is hard—because then they will open the refrigerator—and this is when you act like you are perking up a little. THEY WILL NOW OFFER CHEESE OR DELI MEAT—HOLD OUT FOR WHATEVER IS YOUR FAVORITE the first time. After this it will be offered each time. WINNER MIKE!

3. Stare at your food bowl a lot. If you have a cone on and a surgical suit they will feel bad. Just stand and stare. Eventually they will either bring cheese or dog cookies.

4. Be very good for medication and they will be so happy you will get extra goodies. I also had to have eye meds and they always gave me extra goodies for that. And eye meds get given A LOT, so you do the math.

5. If you want/need a new bed, all you have to do is defecate in your surgical suit and roll around in the bed one good time. I know this seems a bit demeaning to yourself and if it’s too much for your ego don’t do it. But for me, I have enough self-love to handle this embarrassment for a short time. I did have to cleaned up. But guess what? If you have stitches they can’t do the big-time home bath, so it’s really not that bad. They threw the lumpy bed out and now I have a brand new one!!!!

6. Surgical Suits suck. They make you feel irchy. So when you go outside just run right at the shrubbery repeatedly and it’s a great little moment of bliss. Then you’ll actually get a break from it when you come in, because it’ll be covered in leaves and pinestraw so they will have to wash it!

7. If you at first have a cone to wear, run into the wall with it and scrape down the hallway. They will then buy you an inflatable donut. These are fantastic pillows! I can’t tell you how good the meds plus the donut sleep have been…

8. Try to schedule your surgery close to a holiday like Thanksgiving. When you begin to feel better (which is honestly not too far from when you actually come home) just look at your parents with puppy dog eyes. They will be reminded over and over how thankful they are for you. I call this a deposit for the future. That way they can remember how much you clearly edify their entire existence. This is especially fantastic as you roll up towards Christmas. I have high hopes for some amazing gifts because of this deposit I made…

All in all, I am honestly THRIVING. I get my stitches out tomorrow and hopefully will lose this ridiculous suit. Maybe I’ll get to keep the donut but even if not, I know that if I need it all I have to do is squint my eye a little. They will get it super fast that way.
