Introducing future Dr. Taylor Kring! Taylor is set to graduate from Ross University next spring and return to her roots at the hospital she grew up in. We're delighted to share Taylor's incredible journey with MVP!

“I started working at Mellett Animal Hospital when I was in high school and stayed there all through undergrad. I was just a kennel assistant at the time, but MVP treated all of the support staff so well which really stood out to me. When I found out I was going to Ross, our office manager had asked if I would be interested in being a student advocate, which I of course said yes to. So, I was and still am an advocate throughout my time at Ross and helped organize MVP's first ever visit to St. Kitts! And now I'm really happy to say that I'll be returning to Mellett Animal Hospital as a DVM in 2025!”

Currently immersed in her final year of vet school, Taylor is undertaking clinical rotations at the University of Florida and has secured her place as MVP's inaugural signed Next Gen Vets candidate from the class of 2025! We couldn't be more excited to see Taylor continue her journey with MVP and the wonderful team at Mellett Animal Hospital!

Meet Olive, a brave pup whose journey started with a challenging surgery referral. Thanks to the collaboration with our Oncology Specialist, Dr. Shawna Greene, Dr. Libby Czapor was able to pivot to a successful chemotherapy plan. Now, over a year after her lymphoma diagnosis, Olive is thriving!

Dr. Czapor stated, “My patient Olive originally came to me as a surgery referral, as her spleen was too big and making it difficult for her to breathe. After completing my physical exam and finding an enlarged lymph node, I figured surgery was not Olive's best option. Not only was I able to call Dr. Shawna Greene right then to confirm my plan to forego surgery and further work up a potential lymphoma diagnosis, but Dr. Greene then helped me formulate an ongoing chemotherapy plan to treat Olive's diagnosed lymphoma, which we started only a couple of days later. Having Dr. Greene to rely on allows me to be able to pivot when necessary and empowers me to offer the best care possible for my patients, especially Olive. Thanks to Olive's committed owners and Dr. Greene's ongoing support, I am proud to say that Olive is over one year out from her lymphoma diagnosis and still loving life (and treats of course)!”

This story demonstrates the power of the MVP network and our commitment to medical excellence! Olive❤️MVP

Hear from Coral Mattison as she shares the standout moments from her extraordinary veterinary technician externship with MVP!

“During my time as an extern, I have enhanced my surgical assistance and anesthesia skills, I have gained proficiency in my laboratory skills and improved my small animal and exotic restraint skills along with my venipuncture techniques. I also learned many new practical ways to perform daily tasks!

Starting out in my internship I had a lot of interest in working with exotic animals. Luckily, my host hospital has an exotics veterinarian that can care for all kinds of species! It has been a great learning experience to collaborate with and gain insights from our exotic vet, exposing me to aspects I wouldn’t typically encounter in tech school. For instance, a few of the many learning experiences I got to help with included a sugar glider neuter, the removal of an oral abscess on a red-tailed boa, taking x-rays of a finch’s broken leg, anesthetizing a rabbit for a tooth trimming, cutting the flight feathers, and trimming the beak of a yellow crested cockatoo, drawing blood on a ferret, and trimming the nails of a tegu lizard!

I learned many amazing skills that are essential to a veterinary technician’s success. One thing that has been very valuable to me is learning better restraint techniques that have been very helpful with scared or aggressive patients. Learning and practicing safe skills to properly restrain patients is something every technician should appreciate. Not only for the patient’s safety but for our coworkers and our own. Animals can be very unpredictable and when an animal loses its patience, I want to be confident that I can make the right decisions and adjustments to maintain a safe environment for everyone.”

Are you currently on the job hunt? About to start searching? Considering a return to your roots? There may be more out there than you know!

Hear what Dr. Dan Phillips, MVP's Director of University Engagement, has to say about not limiting yourself geographically when you look for your first job.

"We’ve learned that home is more than a location. It’s the people, communities, families, and friends that you incorporate into your life no matter the physical distance. An amazing mentor of mine once said to me, “There is no one that advocates better for your personal, professional, and financial goals than yourself.” If the resources, mentorship, and professional growth opportunities you desire don’t exist at home, then you may be limiting yourself professionally by choosing to return to a location that you know in your heart can’t help you achieve your goals.

My wife and I always thought that we’d start our lives, family, and career back home in North Carolina, but at the time of graduating, the best opportunities for our goals were in Chicago. As our professional network expanded, additional doors and opportunities continued to open here in Chicagoland. The life-changing mentors we found here gave us the opportunity to reach a level of professional achievement, personal happiness, and financial freedom that, honestly, we never dreamed was possible for ourselves.

The best opportunities can be close by, but sometimes, it's somewhere completely unexpected. We return home to Raleigh at least 2 to 3 times a year, and it will forever feel like home for us when we bring our daughter there. Still, we are grateful that we made a choice not to inadvertently limit ourselves and the opportunities for our family by folding to the allure of home.

My encouragement to you as you start to think about the next phases of your career is simple: think about your dreams for yourself and your family, then bravely pursue the best opportunities to make those dreams a reality. Sometimes, that may mean exploring opportunities beyond your hometown."

Alicia Cotsoradis, Michigan State University Class of 2025 shares her incredible veterinarian externship experience with MVP!

“I wanted to say thank you to Dr. Sam Levitt, MVP Regional Medical Ambassador, for helping coordinate this externship as it was probably hands down the best week in my veterinary career. Dr. Caplan, Dr. McCallick, Dr. Diego and Dr. Roberta specifically went above and beyond to help give me amazing opportunities to grow and learn. They showed me so much patience in answering all of my MANY questions.

My first day I got to do more than I have done in my entire veterinary career. I got to create anesthetic protocols, neuter a dog, seal a cat's tooth, remove a mass (all of these by myself!), scrub in on a toe amp, practice my tech skills, etc.

On the second day I got to experience the reason I got into vet med firsthand. There was a critical dog with a severe FBO. Dr. Caplan and Dr. McCallick both stayed after work to help work up this case. Without the incredible hospital team, I honestly don't know if the dog would be alive. Drs. Caplan, McCallick, Diego, and Roberta all stayed, and we worked until 2:30 am on this dog and it survived!!! It was one of the best nights on my life!

And then finally, on my last day, Dr. McCallick helped walk me through a really tough spay and never once made me feel inadequate for my surgical abilities but rather met me with patience and all of her amazing advice.

So, I just wanted to say thank you for this experience and shout out Companion Animal Hospital Norridge and their team of incredible doctors and hospital team. These doctors are who I want to be like when I graduate!”

Thank you to Dr. Kathy Anderson for her outstanding leadership in the practice and for establishing a culture that fosters exceptional student experiences like this one.

Celebrating Mentorship in Action at Pedley Square Veterinary Clinic!

Hear from extern, Jamie Smith, about her MVP mentorship experience! “I had the privilege of meeting two amazing veterinarians, Dr. Scott and Dr. Raduziner, when I shadowed at Pedley Square over winter break following my first semester in vet school. My experience with them was truly unforgettable, as I feel that they were some of the first individuals to show me what mentorship looks like in a clinical setting.

With Dr. Scott, I was encouraged to answer rudimentary anatomy questions pertaining to what I had just learned during the semester. He was extremely patient with me and talked me through every single procedure he performed no matter how repetitive. He even guided me through a cat neuter and allowed me to perform one myself before the end of my stay!

Prior to this externship, I had never shadowed anyone who went through such great lengths to make me feel included in every surgery and ensured that I understood the mechanisms behind them all. If that is not mentorship, then I do not know what is.

In a similar way, Dr. Raduziner would walk me through each case she saw. She would challenge my thinking by asking me to form a mental list of differential diagnoses based off physical exam findings. Next, she would explain the pathophysiology behind every diagnosis followed by an explanation of which drug to treat with and why. Additionally, Dr. Raduziner always took time out to answer my questions even when she was busy. Her mentorship is what stimulated me to “think like a veterinarian” by using deductive reasoning to interpret clinical cases.”

Are you a 3rd or 4th year veterinary student looking for customized hands-on experience tailored to your individual goals? Gain valuable experience and meet your future mentor with an MVP Externship!

Dr. Tonozzi along with other veterinarians, evaluate dogs in a team as they come through checkpoints during the race. Meet Sarah Colclough! Sarah graduates from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2024!

Her externship experience taught her specifics of surgery/exam techniques, better client communication, and how to efficiently operate in appointments. Sarah said, “One of my favorite mentoring moments was when Dr. Eadie would let me evaluate patients and then give me his advice on how to improve the SOAP I had created for them. My other favorite mentoring moment was getting to talk with Dr. Nelson about how to navigate becoming a veterinarian, she gave me life advice I will never forget.”
