It was a hot electrolyte kind of day in North Texas for the Loving Long Ears crew! 🫏🌡️💦 As I started making the electrolyte buckets for everyone, I automatically found myself reaching for two extra for Amelia & Buffy… and was reminded just how much we’re missing those sweet girls while they’re at the hospital. 💕 This special treat is always a favorite with the donkeys, and it definitely helps them stay more comfortable and hydrated during these intense Texas heat waves. Everyone was happily enjoying their cool refreshment today! 😊
We can’t wait to have Amelia & Buffy back home with the rest of the herd. 💜 lovinglongears.org 🫏

🫏 Meanwhile back at Loving Long Ears, the heavy and very loud road construction happening right next to the barn had all the donkeys a bit on edge today. 🚧 We decided everyone deserved some quiet downtime, so lunch was served in their stalls where they could relax with cool evaporative coolers and fans blowing. 💜 We don’t think anyone was complaining about the little escape from all the noise… especially with it being a steamy 95 degrees and humid outside! 🥵 Texas summer is making its presence known. Sometimes even donkeys need a peaceful retreat and a little spa treatment. 😊✨ lovinglongears.org 🫏

💜 UPDATE — DAY 6 FOR AMELIA PEABODY 💜
Today we went to visit sweet Amelia Peabody at Outlaw Equine Hospital, where she continues her healing journey with her devoted daughter, Buffy, by her side. 💕 Our wonderful LLE volunteer, Toni, also came along to visit and check on her.
What began as aggressive fly bites on an uncovered area of Amelia’s leg quickly escalated into a serious lesion and spreading infection—even while being treated according to our vet’s recommendations. The infection eventually broke through the upper part of her leg, making hospitalization necessary so she could receive intensive care in a sterile, fly-free environment.
Amelia is receiving daily wound cleaning, drainage, and close monitoring from the hospital staff. Today marks Day 6, and the recommendation is for her to remain in the sterile ICU environment a bit longer to support continued healing.
Everyone at Loving Long Ears deeply misses Amelia and Buffy, but we also want to ensure Amelia reaches a safe stage of recovery before bringing her back to our hot Texas barn, where flies could easily irritate and worsen her healing wounds. The current plan is to reevaluate her on Monday to see if she may be ready to transition to an outside stall, where she can begin acclimating back to the heat while the team monitors how her leg responds to environmental exposure and flies.
We are incredibly grateful for all of your love, prayers, caring messages, and generous donations helping offset this unexpected and lengthy hospital stay. Your support means more than words can express. 🙏✨
💜 If you would like to donate to help us with Amelia's extended hospital stay and continued care, we would be extremly grateful! 🫏 lovinglongears.org 🌼

Our sweet Bud has been spending a lot of time standing in front of Amelia and Buffy's stall, sniffing around with a somewhat puzzled look, as if he's trying to figure out where his friends have gone. 🫏💕 We're all missing Amelia and Buffy while they're away at the hospital. Amelia is receiving the specialized care she needs for her leg and must remain in a clean, sterile environment until she's healed enough to safely return home. We know she'll continue making good progress and that this little family can be reunited soon. Until then, Bud will keep watch over their empty stall, waiting for his friends to come back. 🫏lovinglongears.org 💙 Thank You to everyone with your loving messages and support for Amelia Peabody! ✨️

(UPDATE FROM HOSPITAL)
"Amelia has remained bright, alert, and comfortable throughout the night. Her wounds remain unchanged, with a moderate amount of drainage present. No increase in swelling, heat, or discomfort has been noted."

"Amelia remains bright, comfortable, and stable this morning. Her wounds continue to drain appropriately, and she is maintaining a good appetite and normal manure production. Continued monitoring is recommended."

💜 When it rains, it pours...
Yesterday evening, we admitted Amelia Peabody and her daughter Buffy to the Outlaw Equine Hospital after what began as a seemingly simple fly bite turned into something much more serious. With all the rain we've had in Texas, the biting flies have been relentless.🪰 They targeted a small uncovered area on Amelia's leg, creating an open sore. Following our veterinarian's recommendations, the wound was cleaned, disinfected, and bandaged. At first, she appeared to be improving, but within a short time her entire leg swelled to nearly twice its normal size. A second lesion higher on her leg opened and began draining continuously, making it clear she needed more intensive care. Amelia was admitted so her leg could be thoroughly cleaned, treated, drained, and closely monitored in a sterile environment. Because Buffy has rarely been separated from her momma and we didn't want her becoming stressed or depressed, she went along to provide a little emotional support. 💕 As always, we are so grateful for everyone's love & support for the Loving Long Ears Donkeys!!
🌼 So far, Loving Long Ears has already paid $2,000 toward Amelia's hospital stay, treatment, and transportation costs, and have received donations of $1,700. We won't know the final total $$$ until we bring the girls home. We are asking for urgent tax-deductible donations of any amount to help offset these unexpected medical expenses. 💖 Most importantly, we are grateful that Amelia is receiving the care she needs and that we caught this before it became even more serious. 🙏🫏
If you would like to help, donations of any size are greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your support, prayers, and kindness. We couldn't do this without our wonderful Loving Long Ears family. 🫏💜

💙 There truly aren’t enough words to express our gratitude for Rick’s college buddies — Bryce, Dave, Bill, Brian, and Dale — who flew in at their own expense to support my husband Rick (their dear long-time friend) during his recovery from a stroke. 🙏 With our house needing to be packed and ready to close on June 9th, these incredible guys jumped in and made a huge dent in the work. From packing countless boxes and moving heavy furniture to making multiple trips with a U-Haul to our storage unit, they tackled every challenge with smiles, determination, and a lot of heart. And as if that wasn’t enough, our regular hay deliveries for the donkeys have been poor quality lately, so we've had to pick up hay ourselves over the past couple of weeks. This amazing "A-Team" went above and beyond by taking the rental truck to pick up hay plus bags of shavings and unloaded it for the donkeys at Loving Long Ears 🫏 lovinglongears.org 💜
We have a feeling there may be a few sore muscles, but their kindness, generosity, and friendship have meant more than we can ever say. Watching these lifelong friends of Ricks show up in such a big way has been incredibly moving.
Thank you, Bryce, Dave, Bill, Brian, and Dale. We love and appreciate you all more than words can express. 💙✨

💙 An Update on Rick's Recovery Journey 💙
First, I want to apologize for the delay in posting an update. Life has been a bit of a whirlwind these past couple of weeks as we've been focused on helping Rick adjust and recover after his stroke, while also packing our home in preparation for closing on June 9th.
Most importantly, we want to thank each and every one of you for your prayers, encouragement, messages, and support. 🙏✨ We truly believe those prayers are working! Rick has now started outpatient stroke rehabilitation, and as many of you know, he is one incredibly determined guy. His strength, faith, and perseverance continue to inspire me every day, and we are grateful for every step forward he is making.
We have also been blessed by the kindness of so many wonderful people. Our dear friend Kerry took a train from Austin to spend Rick's first week home with us, offering support, encouragement, and friendship when it was needed most.🩷 Paola and Danny generously gave up an entire day to help pack boxes and mow the yard—an exhausting job that made such a tremendous difference for us. 🌼 We have also been incredibly fortunate to have the most amazing real estate agent, Frank Capovilla Not only has he been guiding us through a smooth home sale, but he has gone far above and beyond—stopping by to visit Rick, ordering moving supplies, helping me search for a temporary rental, and even offering to pick up Rick's buddies who are flying in tomorrow. 💙 The kindness we've experienced has truly been overwhelming. 🌼 And of course, words cannot express our gratitude for the incredible volunteers at Loving Long Ears. 🙏 They have stepped up in such a big way to keep the barn running smoothly and ensure the donkeys continue receiving the exceptional care, attention, and love they deserve. The long ears have certainly not been lacking in extra hugs and affection! 🫏💕
We are hopeful and excited to begin resuming therapy sessions, new volunteer orientations, and visitor appointments around mid-June.
Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for walking this journey alongside us. Please continue to keep Rick in your prayers as he works hard in rehab and continues his recovery. Every prayer, kind thought, and act of support means more than we can ever express. ✨️
With gratitude and love,
Jules & Rick 💟

💙 5/22/26 UPDATE ON RICK 💙
Rick is still in ICU being closely monitored, and we are now starting to see some of the effects from the stroke that will require continued physical and cognitive therapy for awhile. We know this journey will take time, but Rick is a strong, determined man with deep faith and a fighting spirit. 🙏✨️ It’s been an emotional and challenging time, and I truly cannot express enough gratitude for all the love, prayers, messages, and support being sent our way. 💜 So many wonderful friends have reached out, and our amazing Loving Long Ears volunteers have stepped up in such a big way while I also need to be at the hospital. The kindness and support have meant more than words can say. lease continue to keep Rick in your prayers as he works toward healing and recovery. 🙏💙✨️

(Update on Rick)
We are incredibly grateful for all the prayers, love, and support being sent for Rick. 🙏💙 The doctors believe the procedure to remove the blood clot from the right side of his brain was successful, and we are so thankful for the quick actions of the paramedics and medical team. Rick is now resting in ICU while the nurses, speech therapists, and doctors continue working closely with him. He still has some limitations affecting the left side of his body, but we are holding onto hope and taking things one moment at a time. Your prayers, kind messages, and support mean more to us than words can express. Thank you all so very much! 💜

Friends, I’m asking for prayers tonight for my husband Rick. ❤️ This evening he suffered a stroke, and we are incredibly grateful for how quickly the paramedics responded and got him to a specialized stroke hospital in Grapevine. The doctors have completed a procedure to remove the blood clot from the right side of his brain, which was affecting the left side of his body. Right now we are waiting for him to come out of anesthesia and praying for strength, healing, and a full recovery. 🙏✨ Thank you all so much for your love, prayers, and support. 💜

What a heartfelt morning celebrating Andrea, Izzah & Chris, along with several others, graduating from the Carroll Independent School District Transition Program! 🎓💙 For the past 3 years, Loving Long Ears has been so honored to be a part of their journey through donkey visits, grooming time, friendship, laughter, healing moments, and so many smiles along the way. 🫏✨ The Transition Program is truly incredible in helping these young adults build confidence, independence, life skills, and opportunities for their future endeavors. Watching their growth has been inspiring, and our hearts are full knowing we’ve shared in a small part of their path. 💕 We will truly miss these three as they move on to their next adventures and chapters in life, but we will always treasure the wonderful memories made together with the donkeys. 🌼💛 Thank you for allowing Loving Long Ears to be a place filled with joy, encouragement, and meaningful connections. 🫏 lovinglongears.org 💙
