Socialization is not greeting everyone, human or dog. Socialization is just observing and be neutral in the environement you’re in and the ability to be content and do nothing, taking in smells, sounds, and visual stimulation with no reaction.

Living with your dog training. What is that?

Well it is something that occurs all the time. It’s every single interaction with your dog. You wake up let the dog out, a lot has happened in just that one “task” (you opened the kennel, allowed the dog out, put the leash on or opened the back door, released the dog, asked to go potty, leash walking, come back inside). All those are interactions with your dog. Did you let them rush out the kennel? Was he/she crying or whining when you opened the kennel? Are they jumping on you when the leash comes out? Did they bolt out the back door? Did they pull you on the leash? When you break it down those are all training moments and teaching the dog what is acceptable.

Whether you are teaching them how to live with you, how to function inside and outside of the home, or how to live with your family. Think about what behaviors you’re encouraging (resource guarding, territorial behaviors, fear, anxiety, jumping, biting, etc), if your dog is getting what they seek through those behaviors, those behaviors are going to continue. Training isn’t homework where it’s done in 20-30 minutes. Just like when you are raising your kids, it’s 24/7; lways teaching and coaching them on what is acceptable and not acceptable. If behaviors are getting worse then your interactions are encouraging that behavior somehow.

A rule of thumb to think about: If you cannot supervise 100% of the time then the dog should be crated to prevent unwanted behaviors from occurring.

A training tip: Placing a leash on the dog so you have the ability to correct or redirect.

Good lesson at Lowe’s today with Athena. Generalizing is very important in training.

What is generalizing a dog’s behavior?

Generalizing a dog’s behavior is a process of asking for a desired behavior in various settings, conditions, and environments that are different from the original location of training (usually the house). It’s recommended to ask for desired behaviors in 5 different settings, conditions, and environments for generalization to occur for that desired behavior (although varies from dog to dog).

DM for more information on how to generalize a behavior or grab a 1-hour lesson!!!

We welcomed our first puppy retreater of the year, Oso. He is the littlest retreater we have ever had but even the little ones need rules and boundaries.

Happy New Year to all of our friends we made in 2023 and to all of our new friends in 2024. We have been blessed to meet and work with some amazing families and their dog children (plus their human children too) and want to thank everyone for their support as we have grown this past year and have new things planned for 2024. Thank you for the continued support and trust!

Transparency is very important in regards to your puppy’s health. Our number one concern is the overall health and safety of your puppy over training any day. If we notice something off, such as a bump, limp, weird urination pattern, loose stool, parasites, etc we are going to let you know and head to the vet! So today we went to the vet, but while there we got to work on sit, no jumping, off, impulse control all while getting a good bill of health.

Name recognition - the attention getter!

We work on name recognition at a young age by loading the name. Why? To give value and importance to it, so that when you say it, there is an immediate look to you for direction/instructions!
