From hiding under a shed to hogging the whole couch.
Boulder came to us from a backyard breeder situation. As a double merle, he never should have been bred. These dogs often face heartbreaking and completely preventable challenges, like blindness, deafness, internal issues, and severe fear-based behaviors. Breeding for a look at the cost of their well-being is cruel, plain and simple.
When Boulder arrived, he was frozen in fear. Completely unsocialized, he would wedge himself under a shed in the yard and refuse to come out for hours. It took over a year before he even began to trust us. Now, after 2.5 years, he finally knows what it’s like to feel safe. To relax. To sprawl out on a couch instead of disappearing into the shadows.
This post is for anyone who’s fostering or adopting a fearful dog: it takes time. A lot of it. But these dogs are worth it. Just because they don’t bounce back overnight doesn’t mean they’re broken. It means they were failed before, and now it’s your turn to help them heal.
Please don’t give up on the ones who need you most.
