Marlo Cone post op.MP4
Why is following post-operative care instructions like wearing a cone so important?
Following post-operative care instructions can drastically affect how your pet heals from surgery and how quickly they heal.
Though a cone is a difficult experience for pets and owners alike a cone or surgery suit is highly recommended. A pet licking their surgery site can cause damage to the site by opening up the incision or causing infection by introducing bacteria from the pets' mouth.
Post-operative medication like Carprofen (for dogs) or Onsior (for cats) not only helps with pain management but can help keep inflammation down which will speed up the pets' recovery. Antibiotics are not always given for every procedure as surgeries are performed in a sterile environment, however, if an antibiotic is given, make sure to give the entire course of antibiotics. If not completed, you might not finish treating an infection that was there prior, and/or you can create an antibiotic resistant bacterium which is much harder to treat and more expensive.
Following bandage changing and wound after care instructions keeps wounds clean from debris, dirt, and bacteria build up. Checking the surgery site daily can help you catch early signs of infection. At any point, if you feel your pet is not recovering from surgery well, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.
Ultimately, following post-operative care instructions can save you and your pet from a lot of pain and discomfort and saves your wallet from the extra expense of a surgery to repair the site or long courses of antibiotics.
