Benji and Bella, 16 week mini poodles, had their first in home lesson today. In addition to all the usual puppy info on socialization, habituation and confidence building, I also always stress with little dog owners how important it is to treat them like big dogs as much as possible. Little dogs are more prone to jumping on people due to their size (and people worsen this by reinforcing it because"it doesn't matter, they're little"), being reactive on leash (picking them up when being reactive also makes this worse), resource guarding (couches and laps are their favorite) and aggression (if a little dog shows teeth or other mild aggression it's usually overlooked or even laughed at because it's not a genuine threat due to size). If you have a little dog, always ask yourself if the behavior in question would be acceptable if they were a regular or large size dog. These two are also litter-mates which can bring about a whole other set of behaviors to the mix. Luckily, the owners are former German Shepard owners and knew to get started on their training ASAP and called us. Benji and Bella were already showing off their new skills by the end of the lesson, great work, littles!

Theo, short for Theodore, just had his second puppy lesson and will be starting our five day head start board and train in a little over a week. Not gonna lie, at 12 weeks old he's kind of a big deal! He's already nailing sit, down, roll over, high five, AND he takes killer glamour shots!👍😃👍

💗💗 BEAR💗💗 just had his second puppy lesson today... And well, he's just about as cute and aptly named as you can get, a real cuddle bear. He's a Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepard mix and one of the calmest sweetest puppies ever, good with the kids, the cats, and barely stays awake long enough to get into trouble😆 ALMOST...

I love this time of year for using swimming as confidence building with dogs! Chopper has grown up with us this year, from shy and terrified of dogs and people when he started our five day head start train at 14 weeks, continuing on to daycare twice a week, he has grown to be so much braver. He LOVES the kiddie pool so I thought I'd give him a shot at the river while we worked on his off leash e collar training. He was a natural and would have stayed all day... So cute!

Those of you who have been in the TBTE community are very familiar with the concept of creating an optimistic dog.

Dogs who are pessimists tend to think that sudden noises, strangers, guests, dogs, or (insert your dog’s trigger) are bad things and nothing good will come of them.

Optimistic dogs live life thinking that pretty much everything that happens will be good. We can orchestrate that change from pessimist to optimist through training.

This cute little lady is Charley, a 6 month old German Pointer, and she completed a Monday thru Friday day train package last week. Typical of the breed she has A LOT of energy and needed a head start on all areas of training. We worked on walking better on a leash, condoning her to the e collar so she can go on off leash adventures, respecting boundaries such as thresholds, and TBTE relaxation techniques. She had plenty of real world exposure and in home training along with small playgroup socialization. All the benefits of a board and train without the overnights! Her owners say she is doing great and so much easier to manage. We'll be glad to see her again next week for daycare💗

Dobby, the very handsome goofball Doberman had his second in home lesson with us this weekend and made huge improvement since his first lesson! Born about a year ago, he hasn't had the opportunity to practice greetings with no people coming over to the house, and is overly triggered by things like the golfers or the mailmen walking by the fence in the backyard. He's the sweetest boy but certainly doesn't look it when he's in that state of mind. His owners worked hard on TBTE techniques like Name and Explain to change the way he felt about the triggers and behavioral downs to help calm his overall state of mind... One week in and he's a much nicer dog at the door and in the backyard!

Taffy started in home lessons today with us! She's one of several new lesson clients this week struggling with "stranger danger" whether it's in the home or out and about. The pandemic was very hard on dogs as well as people, and any puppy born into the time of lockdowns missed crucial socialization especially with things like people coming over and they're really struggling now that life starts to go back to normal.

Chopper is a very handsome Red Heeler/Australian cattle dog 15 week old puppy that is in our 5 day Head Start board and train program this week. His owners felt a little overwhelmed living in an apartment trying to crate and potty train him with the excessive barking he was doing, as well as the frantic mouthiness and nipping that was frequently happening even when they tried to just pet him... I witnessed it in our eval and our first lesson... He was Jaws! I see this quite frequently with puppies unfortunately and when I tell their owners this one crucial piece of information they are shocked; puppies need 18-20 hours of structured sleep until they are 8-10 months old, and if they do not get this, they will act like overtired toddlers, nipping, biting, barking, zoomies, and all frequently late at night when they need sleep the most. Poor chopper was sometimes only getting half of that or less. With just a few days of trying to fill that sleep defecit and applying TBTE relaxation techniques as well as proper crate training, he is calmer, quieter, and 95% less nippy. Sometimes it's so simple and the old adage that "a tired puppy is a good puppy" just isn't true... If they don't get the rest their brains need for development and learn now how to relax and regulate their own emotions and therefore behavior, they might struggle for life.

Tucker was sent to us Monday from Animal Rescue Relay for a board and train. He’s about a year old and the poster child for just how badly a Pandemic Puppy can turn out. He was raised by a mother and her grown daughter starting right around the lockdowns in California and never met anyone else, never went to the vet, most likely never left their house. He’s terrified of most everything, can’t walk on a leash, has separation anxiety and was returned from his recent adoption after a matter of days for resource guarding the female in the house from her husband, dog and guests. Despite being given none of the skills he needs in life from his first owners, he is making impressive progress in my home over the past few days and is coming out of his shell to show his cute playful side. The rescue is completely covering the cost of the training, and when finished, he will be looking for a new home with someone who is willing to continue his included follow ups and plan that we have put in place. Please socialize and habituate your puppies if you plan on getting one soon or have one now...no experience can be even worse than a bad experience for them.
