June
*MOST* weekends in June are still available. Reach out to reserve a spot!
Many of our dogs have a favorite word or phrase (ex “walk” or “treat”). You’ll never guess what the favorite is in our house 🤣😂 Takes after her mom 🙋♀️. Anyone else have an unusual one?
Reya’s Muzzle training progress: I decided it was easier for me to buckle it by holding it/setting it up between my knees and having her target it with her nose. Next step would be to build more duration in her wearing it and fade back on how frequently she gets reinforced for wearing it. At this point, I am VERY happy to see how eagar she is to participate in the “game”, which is why I decided to take the next step and buckle her in it.
Been a slower week at the kennel, so it’s been nice spending time with my own pups! Do your dogs like Hide and Seek? love having as many recall options as possible! Also, building a close relationship with your dog will help with their obedience and overall behavior. Reya is my little buddy
Reya loves to play games where she has to “hunt” (I personally like when we hunt kibble rather than rabbits or moles🤦♀️😂)
Reya’s muzzle came yesterday. She has a low tolerance for pain/medical procedures so this will be used for vet visits. I would rather have her prepared to use one, then it being forced on her in a medical emergency. The last thing I want to do is force this on her right away, So we are working on pairing it positively through a game and reinforcment. This is our second training session. So far, so good!
Since I am a Concept Trainer, I just want to share how important and beneficial this skill/concept is to teach your dogs! There is a few in this particular situation. The biggest are Presence Does Not Mean Access, Calmness, and Novelty. Reya and Toby are hanging out in their bedroom this week while the flooring company installs new floors. So many of you call us to board your dogs when you have similar situations, but what if they had the option to just stay home, in an environment that’s most comfortable/most familiar to them? Have some new toys, bones, and treats to enjoy in a safe space to themselves? Aside from that, this is also an important skill to have for boarding! Can they hang out/be relaxed enough in the kennel? Training is LIFELONG. We should never stop training our dogs in some form or another. They always have something to work on (as do we!) 🥰
Liam yelling at me because I stopped petting him 🤣😂 Sassy boy ❤️🥰
Who’s ready for Summer?! 🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️ Our next weekend opening is July 15th!
Giving your dog some control/a way to communicate and harness shaping
Reya loves catching bubbles! 🥰
Resource Guarding PREVENTION Tip#3: Call your dog away from high value items. Teach them to disengage and physically move themselves away so you can safely retrieve the item IF necesary.
Resource Guarding PREVENTION Tip #2: Toss and Walk. Teaching dogs to be optimistic about the presence of people around while they are eating. (If your dog is already engaging in resource guarding behaviors please make sure you find a trainer that can help you directly with these behaviors. Resource guarding can be very serious and dangerous. These tips are for building optimism and disengagement in dogs to help with the PREVENTION OF resource guarding behaviors developing.)
